Paul Ryan 'soul searching,' possible he could leave Congress after 2018 elections

Quote:
According to people close to Ryan, the idea that he would resign immediately after tax reform, because it's all he's ever wanted, is not accurate. Ryan particularly dislikes the toll the job takes on his family, according to multiple sources.

Politico published a report Thursday attributed to unidentified sources that Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican, has made clear to those around him that he "would like to serve through Election Day 2018 and retire ahead of the next Congress."

Ryan vehemently denied the report, telling reporters that he is here to stay.

"I ain't goin' anywhere," Ryan told reporters while exiting the Capitol when asked about the retirement rumors.

Ryan's office expanded on his denial of the Politico report.

"This is pure speculation," Ryan spokeswoman AshLee Strong said in a statement. "As the speaker himself said today, he's not going anywhere any time soon."

I personally don't like the toll his politics has taken on our country.

He was going to face a major challenge in his own district and woth the current political climate could easily have lost. So if his heart isn't all in, he likely doesn't want to go through that.

This would be great news for Republicans. Ryan has been ineffective ever since he did the seeming impossible in 2012: losing a vice presidential debate to guffawing Joe Biden.

Perhaps he is realizing that he is a politician with a platform that has no real constituency at this point in time.

I think that's the case. Except on some economic matters, Ryan's always been out of step with much of Trump's agenda and also many pre-Trump conservative agendas, and of course he can't gain any traction with Democrats. In addition, he never seemed to really want the job as Speaker or the time commitment it involves.

Once he gets this tax break for the Donor Class through, he really has nothing left to live for in politics.

Are you kidding? He has dreaming about slashing entitlements for his entire adult life.

I certainly can see Ryan leaving Congress if the Republicans lose the House in 2018. I doubt that he would walk away from the Speakership as long as he believes he can remake entitlements. But after what he has been put through I could see him wanting his last vote being to impeach Trump.

Are you kidding? It started before he reached adulthood.

If this tax sham becomes law, the backlash next year will leave him impotent. His political life will be over.

Pretty sure it involved him waking up and having to change his sheets.
