I wonder how many people a year ago would've thought that Navy, UC Davis and Ball State would all be better than Notre Dame (along with Baylor and South Carolina) so far this year? Very Happy

The USC record reminds me of when Colorado did the same thing OOC and then got their butts handed to them in conference Laughing

That happened to SC a couple years ago, as well and is a true possibility of occurring again. I don't know why SC seems to almost always schedule a fairly easy preseason. So far they have not played a ranked opponent. Right now they have 2 weeks rest before they face Texas A&M, who will be their toughest opponent to date.

If you've seen USC, they're quite good. They've been playing a four guard lineup and Moore and Edwards have been outstanding as has Simon. The main thing is that Trakh has been giving all the minutes to six players so who knows how they'll finish up.

I would not be surprised if they ended up in the 6-7 spot of the Pac.

I’ve not watched USC, but I really liked Mariya Moore at Louisville. She was a very underrated player.

I agree. SC is a solid team. Better coach now. I see them as high as 5 in the conference.

I'm not sure I see SC finishing above Cal or ASU. Assuming they also finish behind UCLA, Oregon, OSU and Stanford, that puts the Trojans no higher than 7th in the Pac this season. But I could be wrong! Frequently am!

Cal and ASU to me are question marks as well. And Stanford for that matter. Just my opinion but I could be wrong.

At this point in the season undefeated might mean good team or bad schedule. To clarify I am adding a best win and toughest remaining non-conference game this year for each team.

New Mexico 9-0 (best win: Marquette, toughest game: @Oklahoma)
Florida St 8-0 (best win: Iowa, toughest game: @Texas)
Louisville 8-0 (best win: Ohio St, toughest game: @Kentucky)
Mississippi St 8-0 (best win: Green Bay, toughest game: Oregon)
Navy 8-0 (best win: St. Bonaventure, toughest game:@New Mexico)
Southern California 8-0 (best win: Purdue, toughest game: Texas A&M)
Syracuse 8-0 (best win: Syracuse, toughest game: Mississippi St)
Tennessee 8-0 (best win: Marquette, toughest game: Texas)
Connecticut 7-0 (best win: Notre Dame, toughest game: @DePaul)
Kansas 7-0 (best win: Arkansas, toughest game: @St John's)
Texas 7-0 (best win: Georgia, toughest game: @Tennessee)
UC Davis 7-0 (best win: St Mary's, toughest game: @Oregon St.)
Villanova 7-0 (best win: Duke, toughest game: Temple)
West Virginia 7-0 (best win: Texas A&M, Toughest game: Pittsburgh)
Ball St 7-0 (best win: Purdue, toughest game: Western Kentucky)

Based on the schedules I expect that this list will be cut roughly in half by the end of the year.

You might already know this, but just in case you do not ---the Moore playing for USC now is Mariya's younger sister. The Louisville transfer, Mariya has to sit out this year and won't be eligible till next year. I guess she didn't make a hardship appeal like Shepard did.

Which, if any, of these teams (besides UConn) have a realistic shot of an undefeated season, bearing in mind that some of them have their toughest OOC games in Jan.? Villanova? Ball State? The winner of Sunday's Navy-New Mexico game?

It's still a bit early for rankings to be very accurate, but Massey gives Mississippi State the best shot by far (though realistic is likely quite a stretch even for them).

(--UCONN 45.2%)
Mississippi State 5.5%
Florida State 0.9%
Louisville 0.3%
UC Davis 0.3%
Ball State 0.3%
Navy 0.3%
Texas 0.2%
New Mexico 0.1%
Villanova 0.07%
West Virginia 0.03%
Syracuse 0.01%
USC 0.00...%
Kansas 0.00...%

I don't see Miss St getting through the SEC unscathed, plus they're playing Oregon next week.

Id say Tennessee's toughest remaining OOC opponent is looking to be Notre Dame , along with UCONN's being South Carolina.

It's easy to miss the OOC games that are played during the conference season. UConn has two tough ones in early 2018, Louisville and South Carolina.

My reference was to conference games this year and I made that point specifically to not include games after January 1. The reason I was using that distinction was to look at which teams would likely be going into their conference season undefeated. Sorry for the confusion.

Actually, I meant that as a joke, I'm glad you noticed. They haven't played a remotely difficult game. You choose between Wisconsin (5-4), Northwestern (5-4), Vanderbilt (3-6) or @George Washington (3-5). By play their toughest game was Stony Brook who took them to overtime. All of which is to say I doubt they will be on this list once they play Mississippi St, and they may not even make it past Drexel.
