Round 7

Just 5 games this weekend as we cross the halfway point of this condensed season.
Townsville, Melbourne & Perth continued their good form. Too good in Melbourne's case - the TV game vs Canberra was a blowout.
Sydney Uni slipped from the top spot and Perth make their first appearance in the top 4 thanks to a Courtney Williams masterclass I had the pleasure of watching.

Bendigo 59 (Richards 14p 13r, Banham 11p, Oliver 6p 8r)
Perth 83 (Whitcomb 22p 4r 4a 3s, Ciabattoni 15p, Kunek 11p 9r, Williams 11p 5r 6a, Thompson 9p 9r, Standish 8p, Dowe 5p 12r)
Boxscore

Adelaide 78 (Bishop 24p 13r, Nicholson 11p, Hamblin 9p 5r, Seekamp 8p 6r 5a)
Townsville 101 (Batkovic 23p 14r 5a 3s, Cocks 17p, George 16p 13r, Murray 14p 6r, Garbin 12p, Mincy 10p, Wilson 9p 12a)
Boxscore

Melbourne 96 (Cambage 32p 11r 4a, Garrick 16p, Cole 13p 4r, O'Hea 9p 5r, Tomlinson 9p 4r 4a, Purcell 5p 12r 5a)
Canberra 66 (Bass 12p 4a, Scherf 11p 7r, Magbegor 9p 9r, Hurst 8p 7a, Wehrung 8p)

Bendigo 70 (Laney 17p 4r 4a, Banham 16p, Richards 14p 11r 4a, Payne 13p 6r 5a)
Boxscore

Perth 83 (Williams 26p 10r 7a 3s, Kunek 14p 5r, Ciabattoni 13p, Standish 12p 4r, Whitcomb 10p 5a)

I saw a clip of Cambage's flagrant knee to Bass. What ended up happening with that, Luuuc?

Cambage has always had a temper, and it tends to come out oncourt when she gets frustrated. If she shows up next year, all the gangly arms floating around when she faces Griner could lead to all manner of flagrants and technicals.

Cambage and Griner faced each other once in 2013. It was definitely a physical match up in favor of Cambage.

Nothing. Which, to this point is not surprising because watching in real time I missed it too. Today we'll see if the WNBL says/does anything about it. I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks i missed it. I really dont like those nasty sneaky hard fouls. With the replays in the WNBA she will not get away with it and rightfully so.

Never a dull moment with Liz around. Looked pretty bad, I'd say a fair penalty would be say 3-5 more games than Bass has to miss. It seems like one of the dirty plays she did in China was a lot worse than that.

Apparently they're investigating 2 incidents from the game.
I'm guessing the 2nd one is this:

Did Bass get badly injured due to that clash?

After the first one (the leg) she had to go to the bench for treatment. She returned to the game in the next quarter, but as per the article above it's a pretty bad bruise and she is in doubt for this coming weekend.
The second one sent her to the bench for ~ 25 minutes but again she managed to return to the court.

I have my doubts about the 2nd one. Yes flailing her arms should earn her a foul but i dont think this is that bad. From this video it looked like it barely made contact with Bass. I dont know how it looks from a different angle though

When I slowed down the 2nd one in HD, it was still inconclusive but it looked to me like accidental shoulder-to-head contact.

The WNBL Game Review Panel have assessed the knee incident as "intentional, with high impact contact occurring to the body, resulting in a two-game suspension."
It reduces to a 1-game suspension if she enters an early guilty plea instead of taking it to the tribunal. She'd be silly not to go with that option for this IMO.

Either way she misses the big game against Townsville

Yeah, it could have been a good one between the top 2 teams, but it is no longer a big game.

Liz has accepted the 1 game suspension.

Round 8 - "Cluster Round"

This season's schedule has 21 games, so the WNBL's solution was to gather all 8 teams in Melbourne this weekend. Pretty cool concept IMO.
Especially cool for the Lynx, who added another 2 games to their winning streak and claimed an equal share of top spot.
The bottom 2 teams played each other in one of the 2 TV games this round, and it was a good, close one. In the other TV game, Ruth Hamblin was influential off the bench as Adelaide arrested their recent form slump.
Cambage was suspended for Melbourne's first game of the round, and she got herself ejected in their second one. Asia Taylor is going to push hard for MVP if her form keeps up.

Dandenong 62 (St Blicavs 17p, Lavey 11p 7r 5a, Pedersen 10p 5r, Mijovic 10p, Palau 4p 5r 6a)

Quote:
ON SUNDAY, attention turned to the top-four teams — and all eyes were on star Melbourne centre Liz Cambage to see how she’d respond from suspension.

And her temper arguably flared against the Sydney Uni Flames.

After missing out on the Boomers’ loss to Townsville on Thursday due to the one-game ban for kneeing Mistie Bass, Cambage returned to the floor to take on the Flames in the final Cluster Round match.

As expected, Cambage was influential for the Boomers, top-scoring for her side with 22 points and five assists — although she only had two rebounds.

But with 6.39 to go in the final quarter, Cambage was called for her second technical foul of the game — her first came late in the third term — after contesting a referee call again.

It was the second time Cambage had been ejected in her return WNBL season.

2 games were televised in round 8.
Bendigo vs Canberra - Youtube link - Ezi Magbegor's best game to date, but not quite enough to hold on against Laney, Payne & Banham down the stretch
Dandenong vs Adelaide - Youtube link - Pedersen & Blicavs were solid, but had little help against a very balanced Adelaide effort

Fred Williams is in attendance at today's Melbourne-Canberra game.
I'm guessing he enjoyed Liz's 38 points (16/18 ) & 13 boards in 25 minutes.

Round 9

Led again by Williams & Whitcomb, Perth Lynx continued their steady climb up the ladder and now sit clear at #1.
Liz Cambage had a huge response to last weekend's disappointments.
Sydney's form slide has kept the race for the #4 spot wide open. Asia Taylor had a rare quiet (by her standards) game and it probably cost Sydney the game.

So Luuuc, what has happened to Adelaide? They looked pretty good at the start of the season but seem to have imploded.

I wouldn't say they've imploded exactly, it's just a very even league this season. They just beat a Sydney team that has been playing very well. Perth will have nights when they're "on", and there's no shame in losing to them in that mode. All Adelaide is missing I think is a go-to type, like a Taylor, Cambage, or Williams, who can take over if needed.
Losing Laura Hodges to injury was a significant blow as well.

Round 9 TV game - Townsville Fire @ Sydney Uni Flames, which was a good, close one.
Includes a couple of short features before the game, on Zitina Aokuso and Asia Taylor.

Round 10

Every team played once at home and once away this round.
Sandy Brondello was in the stands today watching the Adelaide-Melbourne TV game, which wasn't pretty, but went down to the wire.

The Good:
Perth extended their winning streak to 11 games - a club record Very Happy
Canberra broke their 13 game losing streak
Melbourne are hitting some form and have climber to 2nd place

The Bad:
Bendigo continues to suck without Kelsey Griffin.
Dandenong were so undermanned that assistant coach (and former Opal) Sam Richards suited up for them today. New injuries also affected Perth (Burton), Adelaide (Novosel), Sydney (Taylor), and ...
Rachel Jarry, who only recently returned to action after missing several weeks due to concussion, copped another hit to the head today and was taken to hospital Sad

It was confirmed today that Natalie Novosel's injury is an ACL tear in her left knee Sad
She ruptured her right ACL a few years ago and bounced back really well from it, so here's hoping she can do the same again.

Round 11 match between the Sydney Uni Flames and Bendigo Spirit
A pretty one-sided affair unfortunately, with Rachel Banham & Betnijah Laney the only Spirit players to reach double digits.

Hopefully this afternoon's televised match between the Lynx & Boomers delivers a better spectacle.

Round 12

With one weekend of action left, the playoff participants are locked in, though not without a fight as Adelaide beat Melbourne and then today took Sydney to OT before going down.
Dandenong's nightmare month continued. Bendigo scored a rare win, but then copped a record-breaking annihilation in Townsville. The Fire are hitting some great form at just the right time.
Perth guaranteed themselves 1st place with today's win over Melbourne, who kept Cambage out as a precaution (groin strain) and were also without Bec Cole (knee). The Lynx will be sweating on the state of Courtney Williams' foot/ankle, which prematurely ended her afternoon today - but not before she single-handedly turned the match Perth's way in a 5 minute rampage.

Bendigo 64 (Payne 16p 4r 4a, Banham 16p, Laney 15p 6r 4a, Richards 13p 11r, Karaitiana 2p 7r 5a)
Dandenong 47 (Mijovic 12p 11r 4s, Roberts 12p 9r, Blicavs 8p 3s, Pedersen 6r)
Boxscore

Canberra 66 (Bass 18p 5r, Hooper 11p, Rocci 9p 6a, Scherf 7p 6r, Hurst 4p 4r 5a)
Townsville 99 (Garbin 23p 4r, Batkovic 21p 8r 3b, Cocks 18p, George 14p 9r 4a, Wiese 5p 6a)
Boxscore

Adelaide 67 (Bishop 22p 8r, Seekamp 12p 5r 7a 5s, Planeta 12p 7r, Nicholson 8p 4r 4a 3s, Clydesdale 5p 6r)
Melbourne 56 (Cambage 21p 16r, O'Hea 11p 8r 5a 3s, Smart 5p 5r)
Boxscore

Dandenong 59 (Blicavs 17p 7r 5a, Roberts 15p 6r, Mijovic 11p 7r, Todhunter 8p 6r 3s, Pedersen 6p 4r 4a)
Canberra 63 (Gaze 14p 5r, Rocci 10p 4r 5a, Bass 9p 4r, Scherf 8p 5r, Froling 8p 4r)
Boxscore

Perth 84 (Williams 19p 7a, Whitcomb 17p 6r 3s, Kunek 12p, Dowe 9p 5r, Ciabattoni 9p, Farnworth 5p 6r)
Melbourne 66 (O'Hea 15p 6a, Grant 11p, Garrick 10p, Conti 8p 4r 3s, Smart 8p 4r, Ott 8p, Purcell 2p 13r 4a)
Boxscore

Sydney 104 (OT) (Taylor 35p 6r 4a 4s, Hamson 19p 10r, Ebzery 18p 8a, Graham 13p, Snell 9p 8r 9a, Wilson 8p 5r)
Adelaide 97 (Clydesdale 28p 4r 5a, Bishop 24p 14r 8a, Seekamp 15p 4a, Nicholson 12p 5r, Planeta 6p 6r)
Boxscore

Townsville 120 (Garbin 30p 6r, Batkovic 17p 13r 4a 3s, George 16p 13r, Murray 10p, Cocks 10p, Wiese 10p, Aokuso 8p 7r, Mincy 8p, Wilson 6p 6a)
Bendigo 62 (Banham 16p 4r, Karaitiana 11p 4r, Payne 9p, Laney 7p)
Boxscore

Ladder:
Perth Lynx 15-4
Townsville Fire 13-6
Sydney Uni Flames 12-7
Melbourne Boomers 11-9
Adelaide Lightning 10-10
Dandenong Rangers 7-13
UC Capitals 6-14
Bendigo Spirit 4-15

* Melbourne won their head-to-head series with Adelaide, so they make the playoffs even if they lose next week and Adelaide wins.
* Similarly, Perth won the head-to-head with Townsville, so they are guaranteed the #1 spot

Luuuc, now that her season is over, is there any insight over there on which way Magbegor is leaning for next year. It seems like the Australian boards have discussed the positives and negatives pretty well. I am assuming her camp knows about the rules. Presumably they are aware that she would be a first round pick in 2019 right now and that she will almost certainly be considered good enough to bring over right away at that point. They would then be aware that even being at UConn as long as EDD was would then push her to the 2021 draft at a minimum unless the rules change in the new CBA.

I haven't heard anything, but will let you know if I do.
Last thing I heard from her was a couple of weeks ago on a podcast. She was asked about it and basically said she hadn't made up her mind about it, and her next focus seemed to be the SEABL season down here (which is still a few months away).
So I'm thinking we might not hear anything definitive for a while.

Round 12 match between Perth Lynx & Melbourne Boomers was a bit of an anticlimax, with Cambage sitting out as a precaution. Even without Liz, the Boomers actually out-played the Lynx for most of the first half, until some overly feisty defence from Monique Conti on Courtney Williams fired her up, and from that point Williams was not going to lose. It's worth watching just for the last 6 minutes of the 2nd quarter:

Round 13 - Final round of the regular season

With the top 4 set, the main things at stake this round were whether Sydney or Townsville would have home court for their upcoming semi finals series, whether the bottom 4 teams could finish the season off on a positive note, and whether the 4 playoff teams could stay healthy. Sadly for the last point, Perth suffered potentially serious injuries in both their games and the fans are now sweating on Dowe (knee) & Whitcomb (wrist).

Canberra continued their late season revival by beating Perth, and Adelaide finished with a win as well. Dandenong's losing streak extended to 7 games, which sadly came on national tv, where they scored 0 points in their last quarter of the season. Ouch. Bendigo copped another 2 L's as well. The big result was Sydney piling on 107 points against Townsville to claim the #2 spot.
Jen Hamson has found some nice form in the final weeks of the season and will be important against Batkovic & George in the semis.

Adelaide 87 (Hamblin 23p 9r, Seekamp 22p 4r 6a 5s, Clydesdale 17p 6r 5a, Bishop 15p 9r 5a, Planeta 5p 5r)
Bendigo 74 (Laney 20p 4r 3s, Payne 16p 4a, Karaitiana 9p, Spencer 9p, Richards 4p 10r)
Boxscore

Sydney 107 (Hamson 24p 9r, Snell 19p 4r 10a 3s, Taylor 18p 11r 4a, Ebzery 13p 7a, Wilson 10p 4r)
Townsville 81 (Garbin 20p 11r, Wiese 13p, George 12p 5r, Batkovic 9p 8r, Donnelly 9p 4a, Murray 8p)
Boxscore

Canberra 74 (Hooper 22p 5r, Magbegor 13p 8r, Bass 13p 7r, Froling 8p, Wehrung 4p 6r 3s, Hurst 3p 8a)
Perth 69 (Whitcomb 20p 8r 6a 3s, Williams 19p 9r 4a 5s, Standish 13p 7r, Kunek 11p)
Boxscore

Melbourne 80 (Cambage 20p 10r, Smart 18p 5r 3s, Conti 10p, Tomlinson 10p, O'Hea 6p 6r, Purcell 5p 10r 4s)
Dandenong 45 (Mijovic 18p 9r, Pedersen 9p 7r 3s, Roberts 6p 5r, Blicavs 3p 5r 5a 4s)
Boxscore

Townsville 83 (Batkovic 31p 13r, George 13p 8r, Cocks 10p 5r, Garbin 9p 7r, Wilson 7p 5r 6a)
Perth 51 (Williams 11p 6r, Farnworth 8p 6r)
Boxscore

Bendigo 63 (Banham 17p, Laney 16p 10r 4a 3s, Richards 8p 5r)
Sydney 75 (Taylor 15p 8r, Wilson 14p 4r 4a, Ebzery 13p 5r 6a, Hamson 10p 10r 4b, Snell 8p 4r)
Boxscore

Final Ladder
Perth Lynx 15-6
Sydney Uni Flames 14-7
Townsville Fire 14-7
Melbourne Boomers 12-9
--------
Adelaide Lightning 11-10
UC Capitals 7-14
Dandenong Rangers 7-14
Bendigo Spirit 4-17

My MVP prediction is Batkovic, with Cambage a very close 2nd, Taylor & Williams 3rd & 4th.

Playoffs begin in 3 days. Best-of-3 semi finals (A-H-H format) followed by best-of-3 finals. All games televised and hopefully live streamed as well on http://foxsports.com.au/live (I'm not sure whether that is geo-restricted)

I noticed Hamson is playing better this season. She looked good in the few games I caught via YouTube. But I think the difference is they don't really bang inside there. In the WNBA, she seems to stay clear of the paint to avoid contact unless she's going 1 vs. 1. Let's she if she sticks in the WNBA in 2018.

She and Shaqator Both should play a few more seasons overseas then try the W a bit later. Neither showed they were ready for this level of play for my wings. They were banned from the hardwood and it was well deserved !

Hamson did play better with the Fever in 2017 than previously in 2015 with LA, but she's still a sloth inside. Of course shot blocking is the best part of her game but she seems to run the floor well now and developed a nice pick-and-roll. Let's see if she added anything for 2018.

Hamson was named POTW for Round 13. Still has work to do to be effective as a WNBA player, but these past few weeks are as good as I've seen her play here.

Round 13 match between Melbourne Boomers & Dandenong Rangers was predictably one-sided considering the Rangers losing streak, but even I didn't see a 0 point 4th quarter coming. Watch at your own risk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STNTe6bKYIM

The semi finals started tonight, and it was a painful start for Lynx fans.
Cole, Dowe & Whitcomb (all of whom have had recent injury worries) all played, but big worries for Perth as they lost big despite major foul trouble for Liz. Boomers did a great job with their defence, led by Bec Cole & Jenna O'Hea, and were raining threes at the other end. Perth looked decidedly fatigued by the end (no surprise considering their recent schedule) and it's going to take something special for them to get this series even with home court from here.

Melbourne 92 (Cole 21p 3a 3s, Cambage 16p 9r, Smart 15p 5a, Garrick 14p, Purcell 8p, O'Hea 7p 4r 11a 5s, Tomlinson 7p 6r 3b, Grant 4p 5r)
Perth 76 (Kunek 22p 4r, Whitcomb 19p 5r 3a 3s, Williams 14p 8r, Farnworth 11p 3s, Dowe 2p 8r 3a)

Ouch, 6-19 for Whitcomb and 7-23 for Williams really hurts. Something definitely looks like it was working for Melbourne's perimeter defense. This would be the intrinsic unfairness with the system where a league becomes virtual knockout at the end. You spend all year proving who the best team is and then decide the actual winners in a week or two at the finish.

I haven't managed to time it right to check whether I can watch a live game, but any of the archived videos of full games on that Fox site say they're unavailable outside Australia (suggesting live ones probably won't work either). Which is a bit of a shame. Seems like pretty unnecessary geo-blocking considering the WNBL presumably won't make any money selling games outside Australia.
