That's it... Mitchell has the three point record all by her lonesome.
She's on a tear in this game. 20 pts with 6:37 left in the half.

Mitchell has 31 pts (10-14) nearing the end of the third quarter.
I'm guessing she'll be sitting the rest of the game with OSU up 85-49

Assuming nothing happens to her, Kelsey Mitchell's utter destruction, by miles, of the career three-point record, which usually creeps up by inches, will be akin to Usain Bolt's destruction of the 100 meter record and perhaps as everlasting as DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak.
42 of FGCU's 63 shots (67%) were three's.
Pat Riley once called the three-point shot "fools gold". |

Clay Kallam disagrees, as do many more head coaches including Steve Kerr and Geno.

I suspect Riley's changed his mind from 40 years ago. I only mention his comment for some historical context and contrast. The three-point shot has evolved from being a very suspect rule, voted down many times by the college and pro ranks, to the kind of featured weapon it was, for example, in today's game.
Nonetheless, I further suspect Clay appreciates being in the authoritative company of Riley, Kerr and Auriemma. |
