Very excited for this matchup! Pauley, I understand, will be pretty packed for this game. That’s as it should be! Hopefully we’ll all be treated to a good one.
Massey calls UConn an 8-point favorite, and even that seems generous to the Bruins. Still, Miss. St. proved that it's at least theoretically possible! The Bulldogs didn’t beat UConn with their shooting, they did it with defense (particularly interior defense) and rebounding, and that's probably the only way UCLA can hope to duplicate the achievement.
I expect we'll know whether or not it's in the cards by halftime. If, after 2 quarters, the Huskies have racked up about 47 points (which is their halftime average so far this season), that probably means the Bruins are just not gonna be up to this particular task, and I'll officially commence with feeling sad, because I'll know that my Bruins are gonna lose. But! However! If I look up come halftime and see that the Bruins have *somehow* managed to hold the Huskies to something like 35 points? Oh baby, buckle on up, because that means the game is on for real!
Go Bruins!

Agree, this is going to be a tough game for my Huskies but the Bull Dog analogy is a bit skewed as now UCONN has a bonifide presence in the middle with Azura allowing Gabby and Naphessa more opportunities to play their natural positions.

99% of the Earth's surface will be rooting for UCLA. This should definitely be UConn's toughest game yet and one of the five toughest of the season.
Last season UCLA was one of three teams to score more than 70 points against UConn, losing by 15 in the Sweet 16.
Especially if Samuelson is out, beating UConn is theoretically simple but practically difficult, as positive and negative luck has to be involved. UCLA must:
1. Not, not, not turn the ball over. Don't let UConn get fast break or secondary break baskets. Force UConn into its half court offense.
2. Deny UConn three-point baskets. This involves some luck -- UConn simply has to be cold. However, if there is no Samuelson, the three-point defense need only focus on Nurse and Dangerfield. Geno will only play six players, and neither Collier, Williams, Stevens nor Walker are serious three-point threats.
3. Hit a lot of their own three-point shots. This also involves luck -- UCLA simply has to be hot.
If UCLA can accomplish these three objectives, UConn will have to win with its interior half court offense, which has not yet been as impressive this season as last. |

So far UConn's defense has been aided by teams with limited guard play. Canada will be the first AA type guard UConn will have faced.
With UConn playing it's third game in 5 days and short their AA wing it should be a battle if UCLA can maintain it's composure in the 1st half.

At the first sign of trouble, Canada will have to resist her usual inclination to play hero ball or she will just dig the hole deeper.
Stick to the game plan.

Dangerfield vs. Canada should be the intriguing match up.

I predict a win for the home team, for these reasons:
-KLS injury.
-Collier funk.
-Travel effect.
-UConn lack of 100% concentration 100% of the time.
-Canada/Billings talent.
-Revenge factor.
-After their performance in the semis last year, UConn mettle unproven.

Today's players can't appreciate how many great historic games were played in Pauley where the men's team back in the Wooden era played the same unselfish passing oriented offensive style and lost about as many times as UConn's women lose at Gampel. But you can see that Geno is like a kid visiting Yankee Stadium for the first time.

4. Get UConn into foul trouble while staying out of it yourself. Difficult to do, but the Husky bench has yet to impress this year.

It is difficult because UConn is among the NCAA leaders every year in fewest fouls committed.
The most probable candidate is Stevens. Someone on the staff said that she was still not up to speed on playing UConn's man-to-man defense because all she ever played at Duke was zone . . . and, of course, no one plays defense in high school or AAU.
Next most likely, based on last season, would be Collier. |

UCLA takes half their 1st period shots from behind the arc, hitting one. UConn led by dead-eye inside scorer Collier with 10 and defensive wizard Wiliams with 7 rbs.

UCLA sort of followed the MacMyrtle game plan, except they didn't have luck hitting threes, they didn't draw fouls on UConn, and UConn executed well on their half court inside game. |
