Round 7

Just 5 games this weekend as we cross the halfway point of this condensed season.
Townsville, Melbourne & Perth continued their good form. Too good in Melbourne's case - the TV game vs Canberra was a blowout.
Sydney Uni slipped from the top spot and Perth make their first appearance in the top 4 thanks to a Courtney Williams masterclass I had the pleasure of watching.

Bendigo 59 (Richards 14p 13r, Banham 11p, Oliver 6p 8r)
Perth 83 (Whitcomb 22p 4r 4a 3s, Ciabattoni 15p, Kunek 11p 9r, Williams 11p 5r 6a, Thompson 9p 9r, Standish 8p, Dowe 5p 12r)
Boxscore

Adelaide 78 (Bishop 24p 13r, Nicholson 11p, Hamblin 9p 5r, Seekamp 8p 6r 5a)
Townsville 101 (Batkovic 23p 14r 5a 3s, Cocks 17p, George 16p 13r, Murray 14p 6r, Garbin 12p, Mincy 10p, Wilson 9p 12a)
Boxscore

Melbourne 96 (Cambage 32p 11r 4a, Garrick 16p, Cole 13p 4r, O'Hea 9p 5r, Tomlinson 9p 4r 4a, Purcell 5p 12r 5a)
Canberra 66 (Bass 12p 4a, Scherf 11p 7r, Magbegor 9p 9r, Hurst 8p 7a, Wehrung 8p)
Boxscore

Dandenong 80 (St Blicavs 19p 5r 4a, Lavey 19p, Pedersen 14p 6r, Roberts 11p 7r, Mijovic 8p 8r, Palau 4p 9a 3s)
Bendigo 70 (Laney 17p 4r 4a, Banham 16p, Richards 14p 11r 4a, Payne 13p 6r 5a)
Boxscore

Perth 83 (Williams 26p 10r 7a 3s, Kunek 14p 5r, Ciabattoni 13p, Standish 12p 4r, Whitcomb 10p 5a)
Sydney 71 (Taylor 31p 9r, Boag 18p 7r, Hamson 10p 6r, Ebzery 4p 5r 7a)
Boxscore

Ladder

I saw a clip of Cambage's flagrant knee to Bass. What ended up happening with that, Luuuc?

Cambage has always had a temper, and it tends to come out oncourt when she gets frustrated. If she shows up next year, all the gangly arms floating around when she faces Griner could lead to all manner of flagrants and technicals.

Cambage and Griner faced each other once in 2013. It was definitely a physical match up in favor of Cambage.

Nothing. Which, to this point is not surprising because watching in real time I missed it too. Today we'll see if the WNBL says/does anything about it. I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks i missed it. I really dont like those nasty sneaky hard fouls. With the replays in the WNBA she will not get away with it and rightfully so.

WNBL powerhouse Liz Cambage faces a potential ban after the Canberra Capitals lodged a complaint against the superstar centre following an unsavoury on-court clash that left Mistie Bass in agony.
Cambage is set to front a WNBL tribunal on Wednesday night and could be slapped with a suspension after her knee hit Bass in the back of the leg when the pair were jostling for position in Melbourne last weekend.

Never a dull moment with Liz around. Looked pretty bad, I'd say a fair penalty would be say 3-5 more games than Bass has to miss. It seems like one of the dirty plays she did in China was a lot worse than that.

Apparently they're investigating 2 incidents from the game.
I'm guessing the 2nd one is this:

Did Bass get badly injured due to that clash?

After the first one (the leg) she had to go to the bench for treatment. She returned to the game in the next quarter, but as per the article above it's a pretty bad bruise and she is in doubt for this coming weekend.
The second one sent her to the bench for ~ 25 minutes but again she managed to return to the court.

I have my doubts about the 2nd one. Yes flailing her arms should earn her a foul but i dont think this is that bad. From this video it looked like it barely made contact with Bass. I dont know how it looks from a different angle though

When I slowed down the 2nd one in HD, it was still inconclusive but it looked to me like accidental shoulder-to-head contact.

The WNBL Game Review Panel have assessed the knee incident as "intentional, with high impact contact occurring to the body, resulting in a two-game suspension."
It reduces to a 1-game suspension if she enters an early guilty plea instead of taking it to the tribunal. She'd be silly not to go with that option for this IMO.

Either way she misses the big game against Townsville

Yeah, it could have been a good one between the top 2 teams, but it is no longer a big game.

Liz has accepted the 1 game suspension.

Round 8 - "Cluster Round"

This season's schedule has 21 games, so the WNBL's solution was to gather all 8 teams in Melbourne this weekend. Pretty cool concept IMO.
Especially cool for the Lynx, who added another 2 games to their winning streak and claimed an equal share of top spot.
The bottom 2 teams played each other in one of the 2 TV games this round, and it was a good, close one. In the other TV game, Ruth Hamblin was influential off the bench as Adelaide arrested their recent form slump.
Cambage was suspended for Melbourne's first game of the round, and she got herself ejected in their second one. Asia Taylor is going to push hard for MVP if her form keeps up.

Dandenong 62 (St Blicavs 17p, Lavey 11p 7r 5a, Pedersen 10p 5r, Mijovic 10p, Palau 4p 5r 6a)
Perth 74 (Williams 21p 7r 5a, Whitcomb 14p 7r, Kunek 14p, Standish 10p, Burton 5p 6r)
Boxscore

Townsville 73 (Garbin 18p 9r 4a, Batkovic 17p 17r, Murray 10p 4r, Wiese 7p, George 7p 4r)
Melbourne 66 (O'Hea 13p 7r 5a, Tomlinson 12p, Grant 11p 4r, Garrick 9p 5r, Cole 8p 4r, Smart 6p 5a, Purcell 5p 11r 6a)
Boxscore

Canberra 80 (Magbegor 20p 4r, Hurst 13p 7r 7a, Bass 12p 7r, Gaze 11p, Froling 10p 4r, Hooper 9p)
Bendigo 83 (Laney 23p 4r 6a, Payne 18p 4r, Richards 15p 6r, Banham 13p 6r 5a, Oliver 6p 5r)
Boxscore

Dandenong 49 (St Blicavs 14p, Pedersen 11p 7r, Palau 9p 5a 3s, Roberts 2p 6r)
Adelaide 70 (Seekamp 15p 4r 5a, Planeta 14p 5r, Novosel 14p 3s, Nicholson 9p, Hamblin 8p 7r 3b, Bishop 6p 12r 4a, Clydesdale 2p 5r 4a)
Boxscore

Perth 84 (Whitcomb 27p 6r 5s, Williams 22p, Kunek 18p, Standish 7p 9r, Burton 5r)
Townsville 79 (Mincy 16p 4r, Batkovic 14p 12r, Murray 13p 4a, George 11p 7r 4a, Wiese 11p, Wilson 4p 6a)
Boxscore

Melbourne 89 (Cambage 22p 7a, Smart 18p, Tomlinson 10p 5r 3b, Purcell 9p 5r, Cole 8p 5r 5a, O'Hea 6p 4a)
Sydney 101 (Taylor 29p 6r, Snell 28p 5r, Wilson 24p 6r, Ebzery 6p 10a, Greaves 2p 6r)
Boxscore

Ladder
Perth Lynx 8-4

Quote:
ON SUNDAY, attention turned to the top-four teams — and all eyes were on star Melbourne centre Liz Cambage to see how she’d respond from suspension.

And her temper arguably flared against the Sydney Uni Flames.

After missing out on the Boomers’ loss to Townsville on Thursday due to the one-game ban for kneeing Mistie Bass, Cambage returned to the floor to take on the Flames in the final Cluster Round match.

As expected, Cambage was influential for the Boomers, top-scoring for her side with 22 points and five assists — although she only had two rebounds.

But with 6.39 to go in the final quarter, Cambage was called for her second technical foul of the game — her first came late in the third term — after contesting a referee call again.

It was the second time Cambage had been ejected in her return WNBL season.

2 games were televised in round 8.
Bendigo vs Canberra - Youtube link - Ezi Magbegor's best game to date, but not quite enough to hold on against Laney, Payne & Banham down the stretch
Dandenong vs Adelaide - Youtube link - Pedersen & Blicavs were solid, but had little help against a very balanced Adelaide effort
