Or maybe Staley concluded she'd get more attention and publicity by not going than by going.

That's true. She's not coaching Duke. She, not her school, is the primary attraction, so her publicity and attention support her recruiting.

So get used to it. She's the flavor du jour.

That is ashamed. what a great honor it would be to go to the White house and let everyone know which team won the championship because a lot of people don't watch women basketball. I would say less than 5% of the people in the USA could tell you who won, this would be a great chance to promote the girl's game of basketball.

Has Trump tweeted about it yet? It could still get womens' basketball some publicity if he does.

It's not exactly a great time to get the invite anyway. 'Oh, BTW you're invited to the white house in a couple of days.' Total distraction at this time of year.

Not surprising given the timing. Also, they were invited to a NCAA champions day, this isn’t an individual invite like teams have received in years past....so they aren’t really giving up a chance promote wbb.

So they won a title back at the end of March/beginning of April and just received a WH invite 7 months later. Not in the summer or fall when there is nothing going on, but in November AFTER their season has started. Of course she was going to turn it down.

Until this Punk-in-chief is removed from office, the new tradition should be:

NCAA Title Runnerup - MUST attend White House meeting with Donald J. Trump or receive a 4-year post season ban.

National Champion - Doesn't have to go

This change will give us some donnybrook title games!

At least the players pussies are safe from being grabbed. Good, i’m VERY glad she turned down the invite for whatever reason. Yes it would be a great honor to get a White House invitation, but not with that piece of shit living in it. Maybe they could go visit President Obama at his home instead. Now THAT would be a true honor.

Not a big deal IMO - the big deal was the fact that USC didn't receive an invite during the off-season, when so many teams including past WCBB teams had in years past. Staley stated publicly after USC won in April that if invited the team would go, and that's it was important for the team.

The deal was made into a big deal when no word came forth about a date. Articles were posted during the summer months about USC not getting an invite, and even that the previous SC Governor Nikki Haley - who was now a US Ambassador - would try to work behind the scenes to secure an invite.

When UNC's MBB champions got invited back in September - and declined it for THE SAME EXACT REASONS THAT STALEY AND USC DID, the News & Observer wrote an article about it and interviewed Roy Williams, but nothing was made out of it. They even reported that UNC had also declined an invite to meet President Bush in 2005, again for THE SAME EXACT REASONS THAT STALEY AND USC DID.

But this was in September, and still Staley and USC had heard nothing.

Finally in early October when the team began practicing, Staley - still not having heard anything on an invite at the time - stated that she and the team were done with the White House thing, and were moving on and focusing on preparing for the upcoming season as defending champions. It seemd at the time that an invite simply weren't going to come, so...so be it. Sometime around the start of the season, they got word of being a part of today's bulk celebration. By that time, the season had started, so they officially declined.

Most of the sports that attended the White House are in their off-seasons, and are better able to attend. The CFB champions already went in June, during their off-season. Southern Cal - the defending women's soccer champs, declined as well due to being smack in the middle of their sport's NCAA playoffs (#1 seed South Carolina advanced to the Sweet Sixteen tonight with a 1-0 win over Wisconsin!).

As hard as it is to schedule games to fill out a schedule, and then find a way to squeeze in a trip to Washington DC is pretty hard to do. Which is why most collegiate sports deemed as Winter Sports - like basketball - would have issues going during this time.

The most logical, common sense thing to do - if you even care at all to have teams meet with the US President - is schedule the meetings not long after its been determined that those teams are in fact national champions. That usually takes place at the ENDS of their championship seasons, not at or into the BEGINNINGS of other subsequent seasons. But this administration seems to be struggling with some things....

North Carolina were invited to *attend* the White House sometime in September? That would be before the women's season. Do the men start a month earlier?

The president schedule is very busy, he had 19 teams there today, If South Carolina had wanted to be there they could have been. If the team USA wins the Olympic gold medal, will she go or not.

I'm sure he could have taken 30 minutes out of his busy Fox News viewing time to have had them come this summer if he had the slightest interest in congratulating a black woman coach and a bunch of women athletes.

There were a lot of blacks there today. But he is white so she could not come with her team.

The president's schedule annually is more about meeting functionaries and engaging in ceremonies just like meeting collegiate national championship teams, than not. And it has been this way for decades, if not generations. The problem is not scheduling invites for the teams, its when during the calendar year.

I'm also quite sure that if the White House scheduled an invite for the US Gold Medal women's basketball team (assuming for the 2020 Olympics) to celebrate winning that gold medal, around August of 2024, that the US Olympic team will decline and instead choose to remain in Beijing China and continue competing for a gold medal for that Olympics, as opposed to taking the break to go to Washington and have your pictures taken. Which again, is EXACTLY what Dawn Staley chose to do in November 2017 for her South Carolina team....

I think it would be EXACTlY the same if the Olympic team was practicing in Columbia, South Carolina prior to the Olympics and Staley turned down an invite in late February. And multiple Olympic participants were scheduled to be honored at the same time..

Why would it be similar? USC didn't get an invite to participate in a function that was prior to it's 2017-18 season.....it was invited to participate in a function that would take place during and within its season already being underway. And if the invite or event took place in late February (in 2021, I'm assuming??), then that would give the US Olympic team YEARS OF AMPLE FORWARD NOTICE, as the next Olympics for the team wouldn't take place until 2024.

So really, your analogy would be more like Staley and USC getting an invite for the function which take place much closer to the end of the 2016-17 season, instead of taking place at the beginning of or after the start of the 2017-18 season, which is how it actually happened.

The function took place Friday: South Carolina already had a game scheduled for months to play Clemson the day prior, on Thursday. They also had another game scheduled for months on Sunday versus Wofford. USC was already 3 games into their season prior to the Friday multiple-sports function at the White House. I'd really like you to explain how that looks like the function is "prior" USC's season, in your mind.

So again, unless you are able to explain in a way that makes sense to me, it is EXACTLY like the USA Olympic team being underway with it's Olympic tournament, and then being required to take a break in the middle of it - not prior to it as you said - to travel to D.C. and take pictures with the President. Just like I got through saying earlier, above.

And again, the whole big deal of it was the timing - or lack of same - in the notification being handed out. Perhaps had South Carolina been notified during the off-season, Staley could have shifted a game or two around to allow for more room to attend the event, and still not disrupt preparations for a season already underway for a team attempting to defend a national championship. As stated above, even UNC was given more forward notice than USC was, and it still wasn't enough for them, and they declined and no one seems to care at all about that. The Stanford women's soccer team also declined because they are involved in the NCAAT for their sport, and again no one seems to be upset about that.

Staley made it a point to publicly announce right after USC won the title that they would be happy to attend a meeting with President Trump, and then didn't hear anything about it or when it could take place for months. They had no choice but to assume they weren't going to receive an invite, and so moved on. The invite came very late, but they have moved on. It's not Staley's or USC's fault - they were much more forthcoming about it all than the White House was....

The USA Olympic team plays exhibition games leading up to its Olympic contests which would be considered it's season. South Carolina is over a month away from playing a conference game. South Carolina could have taken the entire day off on Friday the 17th and had enough in the tank to defeat minor conference Wofford on Sunday the 19th.

I was saying Staley and South Carolina (not USA basketball) would have had to have been invited to the White House in late February before the tournaments - or at least somewhere into the SEC season. I just don't think "every day - every single practice -
counts" in the non-conference part of the season.

I never said the function was prior to USC's season. "prior" was with regard to the Olympic team and the Olympics, but the Olympic team would have been as much into their - much shorter - season as South Carolina is in theirs. I don't think the Olympic team's "season" starts at the Olympics, it starts when they get together and begin their preparation.

USA basketball is as much into their "season" in August before the Olympics as USC is in November. I said "prior to the Olympics" but implied was the USA basketball was into their season.

South Carolina is 1.5-hour flight away from the White House. A trip up and back is not gonna completely disrupt their preparation for non-BCS Wolford. Staley was miffed (understandable) that it came late and they would be with other teams. She didn't think it would disrupt their season or cause them to lose to Wofford.

No one is placing blame on Staley, just challenging people defending her (don't think a defense is necessary) by claiming she just couldn't do it because that day of practice couldn't be missed (and they could have done both - practice and visit the White House). I really don't think anyone thinks lowly of Staley because she didn't like a late - and shared ceremony - invite. And black teams are refusing to meet with Trump even without a late invite. It would only take a small slight to tip the scale. Under same conditions Staley likely would have been posing with Obama.
