I wish they'd list the 6 teams that were allegedly profitable in 2015. New York is out, per Dolan. I would put San Antonio out based on their selling the team. I think I read last season that Chicago has never made any money. Tulsa decided to move in 2015 so they must have been out. Hard to see Atlanta making money with their crowds and no jersey sponsor. Washington's crowds also didn't suggest they would have made a profit in 2015 (although I think they had a jersey sponsor)..

I'd say the 6 teams were: Minnesota, Seattle, Connecticut, Phoenix & maybe Indiana & Los Angeles.

Creative accounting can do wonderful things ...
But if six of the 12 teams are breaking even, close to breaking even, or in the black, that's good news.
Still, the day a WNBA franchise is actually worth something on the open market will be the day we know the league has truly made it.

How are we going to see what is on a shoulder patch 2.25 by 2.25 inches?

Same way you see any logo on a jersey - better on TV. The adidas logo was always pretty recognisable on the opposite shoulder, for example, at a smaller size than that. Interestingly, the 'upper left shoulder' is where a lot of teams put their team logo when the middle of the jersey had been given up to a sponsor. So are Nike putting a team insignia somewhere else, or fitting it in under the potential sponsor, or is the league dumping that entirely? Or I suppose the team symbol could be on the other shoulder, with the swoosh appearing somewhere else. |

This is great news. The climate could help as more businesses want to appear female friendly.

But the value of their franchises are increasing, which means the annual profit/loss doesn't mean that much.

That's not really a sustainable model

Swin cash live on IG sounding very optmistic that New york are not going anywhere as though she has some type of inside information in which i would believe. She stated look out for the next few days or weeks for new information regarding the liberty . Makes me think something is in the works !

Putting on rose colored glasses for a change, perhaps the deal is in the works and MSG got worried word might leak out so they put this out there. Of course, it goes without saying "No deal is done until it's done."
BTW - maybe this is just a money making scheme. Perhaps Dolan thinks he can actually get a little something for the team, and then make more collecting rent from the new owners for use of MSG for games than he makes now on the team.

It's been a sustainable model since WWII. Granted, the bubble will burst sometime, but franchise prices have gone steadily, if not dramatically, upwards for more than half a century.

You're assuming those are real losses and not just paper losses. I suspect the latter. Not only do owners get to amortize the cost of physical assets, they get to amortize intangible assets including player contracts and luxury suite leases. ("Roster Depreciation Allowance").
Depreciation is a wonderful thing. Ironically, the low purchase price of WNBA franchises makes them far less attractive from a tax benefit standpoint than a 2 billion NBA franchise.
Here's some background.
https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2017-09-08/buy-a-sports-team-get-a-tax-break
http://www.greenberglawoffice.com/roster-depreciation-allowance/
It's just like showing an annual loss on a beach rental house while the property value skyrockets in a booming real estate market. Except sports owners get to depreciate a whole lot of extra stuff.
And you might lose your mortgage and state tax deductions in Tax "Reform", but team owners will be protected.

Are you sure?
I don't know if most WNBA teams even have a positive cash flow. And they certainly aren't benefitting from any appreciation in the value of their franchises, which is usually the largest source of financial gain.
(Consider Paul Allen's Seahawks 20 year investment. $194M purchase price plus $130M contribution to new stadium; current estimated market value $2.5B. It took 30 years for his Trailblazers franchise to appreciate from its $70M purchase price to the $1B+ estimated current value. So how much appreciation will MSG enjoy from its WNBA investment after twenty years of ownership?)

I agree ... without franchise appreciation to fall back on, and with vastly inflated attendance numbers and sometimes not-so-profitable concession and parking deals, the received wisdom is that WNBA teams can lose as much as $500,000 a year, and in good years, make about $100,000.
If WNBA losses were paper losses, it would be a lot easier to sell teams -- and as far as I know, no team has been sold for actual dollars up front in the league's history.
