Tonight Cal opens its season with an exhibition game against perennial NAIA powerhouse Vanguard. The game will be streaming live at 7PM PDT for anyone interested in watching. The link below has an article about the game as well as links to the live stream and stats.

Late to the results party, but St. John's took over in the second half to beat Stony Brook 66-45 in the worst-advertised fundraiser I've ever seen in my life (protip: if you market something as a fundraiser, maybe give people a location to donate at?)

Off to Fordham tonight for their exhibition against Hofstra, then to Seton Hall tomorrow.

Michigan hosted Grand Valley State, coached by a former U-M assistant Mike Williams (Borseth era). Early season jitters allowed the Lakers to beat the Wolverines in the first quarter, 18-15. U-M stepped it up defensively in the final three quarters, limiting GVSU to less than ten points per quarter. Final score 65-43 - a rather bland performance by a program that was tops in scoring last season.

Flaherty scored 19 while primarily playing PG (a new position out of necessity). She played the first half with a back brace but removed it in the second. She did not go on the Europe trip due to back issues.

Thome had 10 points and 3 rebounds but a team-high 5 turnovers.

Hailey Brown, a 6'3" frosh from Canada started at the 4. She had 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Dunston moved to the wing. Her 12 rebounds were tops, but her improved offensive skills (as stated at media events) were not on display, going 1-6.

Munger started at the SG position and had 10 points and several nice pass break-ups and defensive moments. She was in a boot almost all of last season. She appears to be healthy and much quicker this year.

Deja Church, a 5'10" freshman guard, and Kayla Robbins, a 6'1" sophomore forward, each played more than half of the game and had nice, balanced play.

The Wolverines open up their season next Friday against George Mason in the WNIT, and they'll be hanging their WNIT Championship banner before the tip.

Welp. That was a game that happened. Hofstra over Fordham 55-46, behind 20 points on perfect shooting from Aleana Leon.

Rebkellian fantasizers, G'mrice Davis had 16 and 13, but a rough night from the line.

McPhee went down for Stanford during a highly disappointing exhibition for the card. Next weekend is now offficially SCARY.

Colorado wins their lone exhibition against Colorado Christian University 90-55.

The Buffs returned only five players from last years team, including starting junior guard Alexis Robinson, returning from a late-season ACL. Junior forward Mackenzie Ellis transferred to SMU to play with her younger sister. Forward Monica Burich transferred to Drake. Forward Mary Jones transferred as well.

Very rough shooting for junior point guard Kennedy Leonard as well as for Robinson. The pair shot a combined 4-of-20 from the field.

Bright spots were freshman Annika Jank leading the team with 26 minutes played. Jank scored 12 points and added eight boards. Junior college transfer (Midland College) Janea Bunn, a 6-3 junior forward was a stellar 9-of-12 from the field, albeit just 1-of-6 at the line. She finished with a team-high 19 points. She also added five rebounds and two steals in 22 minutes. Freshman guard Aubrey Knight also impressed with 14 points and eight boards in just 17 minutes.

Returning guard Quinessa Caylao-Do, who will heavily counted upon,netted 10 points, four assists and five steals in 24 minutes. Senior point guard Brecca Thomas was a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor for nine points, five assists and two steals in ten minutes.

Notable: The Buffs hit only 3-of-23 treys while allowing CCU to shoot 37-percent on 10-of-27 shooting from beyond the arc.

Colorado has also added a 6-7 juco transfer from Sierra College, junior center Jamie Curtis. She collected four rebounds in five minutes.

CU opens the season at Samford on Nov 10th before playing at North Carolina on Nov. 12. Buffs play their first home game Nov. 15 vs Florida Atlantic.

Ohio lost its exhibition to DII Walsh yesterday, 82-66. The Ohio WBB website neatly avoided that ugly "L" word by headlining the post-game story: "Ohio Women's Basketball Plays Walsh in Exhibition".

Ohio has precious few returning experienced players, and coach Bob Boldon benched all of them for the game, starting five freshmen and backing them up with two juniors who have barely played in their careers. Boldon said he wanted to use the game to evaluate and give experience to the freshmen. I suspect he wouldn't mind if his returners got the impression that their minutes aren't guaranteed, as well. If nothing else, he got a head start on what is likely to be a season-long underdog motivational theme.

I think Boldon has brought in by far his best recruiting class in this, his fifth year. All five of the freshmen can play, and none of them seemed lost or overwhelmed. Three or four of them are plus athletes, and the fifth can shoot. Ohio will take its lumps this season, especially with Michigan, Purdue and Virginia on the non-conference schedule, but they may be competitive by the time MAC play rolls around.

JMU spanked D-III Christopher Newport 79-41 this afternoon. Redshirt sophomore Kelly Koshuta showed us she was worth waiting for with 20 points, some nice rebounding, and a couple of blocks including a real monster in the the 3Q that sent several opponents ducking for cover. Kayla Cooper-Williams showed us she wants last year back, as did Devon Merrit, and our two freshmen, Breyenne Bellerand and Tori Harris, showed flashes of real brilliance in their debuts. Any questions about who replaces Precious Hall were answered with "We all do!" as scoring came from everywhere.

PS. Christopher Newport's coach is particularly obnoxious, IMNSHO, being of the constantly yelling variety, always out of the box and always on the refs as well as on his players. The Man said he reminded him of the worst kind of Little League coach.

UCLA beats Vanguard 87-40. Frosh Chantel Horvat notches a double-double, and other frosh Michaela Onyenwere comes one rebound away from doing likewise. Also: double-digit scoring from a third frosh, Lauryn Miller.
