Round 3

Plenty of thrillers this weekend, with previously 0-2 Dandenong the big movers. Laia Palau suited up for the first time and made an immediate impact, solid in the first game, and hitting the game winner today.
Apparently Courtney Williams blocked Liz Cambage 3 times on Saturday night (would have loved to see that!), but the Boomers got it done in OT.
Sounds like a lot of injuries happening too, unfortunately. O'Hea with a calf strain, Duever an ACL tear, Ott a stress fracture - and that's just Melbourne. Hamblin a back injury, and still waiting on details of Laney's injury. Sad

Townsville 63 (Batkovic 22p 12r, Murray 11p, George 10p 15r, Wiese 7p)

Glad to see Palau healthy enough to play and contribute. So often when a fading star goes to a new place at the tail end of their career, they end up breaking down too easily to show what they can do. But now she's playing hopefuly she can stay in one piece.

And Perth won a game! Wink

^ Definitely the most important part of the round! That was a fun one. A 62 point reversal from 5 days previous.

Palau is smart enough to contribute with her leadership and savyness even though she will always be one of the slowest on the court Laughing

With Round 4 tipping off tonight, here is the Round 3 tv game in which Carley Mijovic led the Dandenong Rangers past the Townsville Fire.
It also includes a couple of small pre-game segments on Sara Blicavs and Cayla George.

ESPN coverage of the WNBL?

http://www.espn.com/nbl/story/_/id/21205221/dandenong-comeback-beats-flames-wnbl

Quote:
Down by one with 13 seconds to go, star forward Asia Taylor spurned a chance to regain the lead when she missed two free throws before turning the ball over on the next possession.

The WNBA import then committed an unsportsmanlike foul on the next play, allowing Rangers star Stephanie Blicavs to seal the win at the free throw line.

It was a disappointing end for Taylor, who has lit up the competition this year, but she still finished as Sydney's best with another impressive stat line of 24 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Ruth Hamblin and Sydney Wiese were interviewed on the Basket Case WNBL podcast this week. During her interview, Ruth spoke about returning to the Dallas Wings next season.

She isn't starting in the WNBL this season, which doesn't bode well for a WNBA career.

In the US, a Snickers without nuts is a Milky Way. Outside the US, it's a Mars bar. What's called a Milky Way in the rest of the world is a Three Musketeers bar in the US.

Round 4 game between Dandenong Rangers and Sydney Uni Flames, which went down to the wire. Asia Taylor & Kayla Pedersen (or Peddersen, according to the commentators) were influential for their respective teams.

I did. I was at that game. In which Perth blitzed the Fire Smile
She didn't have much of an impact in that game but she's a good young player. A post player who plays with energy. I'm a fan. Hopefully she can expand her game, because while she's athletic she's not big enough to be a 5 at a higher level. Exciting prospect. And training all season against Batkovic & George is a good situation for her.
I've managed to see a bit of Magbegor recently too and she has been impressive. She'll be an Opal in no time.

Based on the volume of hype, wouldn't be surprised if she's in Spain next year, at least on the end of the bench. Might as well take her, even as one of the bench players who doesn't play, if she's clearly a big part of the future.

Only problem is that the 5 is a position that's a no-brainer to fill (Cambage + Tolo), whereas we might want to have options at other spots. But all else being equal, yeah I'd be trying to take her along.

In bad news though, Kelsey Griffin was badly injured in Bendigo's win over Melbourne, and will apparently need season-ending surgery on her hip. Massive loss for Bendigo. Hopefully it's something she can make a quick and full recovery from.

Round 5

Good news: Laney, Williams & Ebzery all returned from injury, and O'Hea is close
Bad news: Kelsey Griffin is out for the season as mentioned above. Early estimate is 3-4 months recovery time.
Sydney continued their good run of form, while Adelaide & Canberra went 0-2. Melbourne looked headed for a winless round too, but a 23-9 4th quarter (Cambage 13 of them) got them a gutsy win in this evening's Melbourne Derby.

Round 6

Jenna O'Hea returned to action and had an immediate impact, with Melbourne upsetting Sydney, and then the next day they defeated Adelaide on the back of a massive game by Liz Cambage.
Bendigo are understandably struggling without Kelsey Griffin. Bad time to visit Townsville, the league's toughest place to win.
Canberra pushed Perth for 3 quarters until Courtney Williams engaged beast mode in the final quarter. That was fun to watch.
Sara Blicavs suffered an ACL rupture vs Adelaide.

Bendigo 75 (Banham 21p, Payne 14p, Laney 13p 6r 8a, Oliver 8p 7r, Richards 6p 6r)

Update on Sara Blicavs:
Quote:
Sara Blicavs’ right knee injury that she suffered in last Friday’s loss to the Adelaide Lightning is worse than first thought.
While originally believing Blicavs had just torn the ACL, surgery has revealed she has also suffered a torn meniscus and fractured knee. Blicavs went under the knife on Monday night and will miss at least 12 months of basketball.
The setback means the 24-year-old will miss the rest of this WNBL season, along with the start of the next one. Furthermore, she will be unavailable for national selection for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.
It also means Blicavs’ WNBA ambitions will be on hold for at least the next year.
