Women's Basketball Fantasy League 2016-2017

It's that time of year again! The Rebkells annual attempt in futility at defeating the Four Time Defending Champions and knocking the Cardinal (who have respectfully finished second two of the last three years) out of second! The 2017-2018 Fantasy League is currently accepting applications for this year! We would be delighted to have you join us!

Last Year's Thread: Link to Last Years Thread: http://boards.rebkell.net/viewtopic.php?t=89565&start=0

Link to 2016-2017 Standings:

Current Rules

- 10 player roster instead of 13
- 7 player daily active players as in 2G, 2F, 1C, and 2U.
- a player's position shall be whatever is listed on the team's website. If a team website uses the designations Post or Wing, they shall be construed as follows: P = F/C and W = G/F.
-we have 2 IR spots which can only be used AFTER a player misses an entire game. That player can then be put on the IR and you can sign someone else. When the IR player is re-activated you must release somebody from your current roster.
- stats count only for starting lineup players (bench player stats don't count)
- owners must post their daily lineup in this thread - bench players' stats don't count for your team so this is REALLY important. You can post day by day, or for an entire week, month, or season. Please post clearly player name, school, and the position at which you are playing them. Lineups must be posted before games start that day
- scoring determined by pts, reb, ast, steals, blk, 3's-made, 3pt%, FG%, FT%, & TOs
- player eligibility is Division I only (no DivII, DivIII, or intramural players)
- open free agency - first to the punch wins
- transaction limits:
- two transactions in a calender week (runs from 12 am Sunday to 12 am following Sunday Eastern time - this is Saturday midnight)
- trade/transaction deadline: Feb 7
- live draft will have snake format (the last team to draft in the first round will draft first in the second round and so forth)
- players can be drafted only once by only one team (two different teams cannot have the same player)
- game ends at end of regular season - so playoffs games don't count.

We can obviously change rules if a majority agree.

Old Rules:

-each roster 13 players with a daily lineup limit of eight players structured like this: 3G, 2F, 1C, and 2U (U's can be any position)

I've been thinking about possibly proposing to simplify rules a bit to make it somewhat easier [some for the scorekeeping, some for fantasy players controlling their rosters]. Tell me what you think:

1) 10 player roster instead of 13
2) 7 player daily active players as in 2G, 2F, 1C, and 2U.
3) 2 transactions per week instead of 3
4) we could reduce the number of categories, but I don't really see the point in that since collecting all the data is just as easy as collecting part of the data.
5) Be a bit more hard ass about only using positions as listed on schools' websites.

That's all I can think of and I'm not married to any of these but would like to hear feedback about them. Anybody? Anything else you can think of that would make the game more appealing to others?

That looks good to me, it'll make the ten that you have much more important and stop me from doing a gazillion changes in a week.

I think that we need to have at least two-three more to make this viable this year. We do need to start thinking about when that draft is going to be. (Taking three rounds off of that draft will really help.)

A question.

Do points, rebound etc just get added or are they weighted? Is there a formula?

I might get in.

There's quite a bit of strategy involved so not just straight numbers(which makes it more fun)!
The scoring may seem complicated at first but is in fact fairly simple. In each category you get fantasy points based on how your team compares with everyone else's team. [If you're with a group of people hiking in the woods and come across an angry bear, the joke is that it doesn't matter if you can't run very fast so long as you run faster than the other guys] For example...if your team gets more rebounds than everybody else's team, you get the most fantasy points in that category. So if there are 8 fantasy teams, the best team in a particular category gets 8 points in that category, while the worst team gets 1. Since there are 10 categories, in this scenario with 8 teams, the most total points you can get are 80 (nobody ever does this!).
The other thing about it is that the scoring evolves over the course of the season, meaning that after every set of games your score can go up or down based on how your team is performing compared to how everyone else's is doing. Especially early in the season, this is fairly meaningless since it may just mean that your players had more/less games the first couple of weeks, but over time you can really see how you're doing...and make adjustments to your team accordingly. If you're not getting enough assists, but have lots of rebounds, you might drop a big and sign a PG instead for example.

For me, the most fun part is watching players and leagues that I might not otherwise watch...and of course scheming to make sure my team is the best it can be. There are A LOT of DI players to pick from so it can be fun to find the hidden gems. Like last year, tbinta took Jill Barta from Gonzaga who turned out to be a real gem for her even though I'd never even heard of her before the season started. Last year's stats are useful of course but finding those players who will have a breakout season can be just as important.
There are different strategies to use but you have to overall get some balance amongst all the categories. You can probably afford to be terrible in one but not two categories. And within a category you might also need to do a balancing act. So for instance if you get someone who shoots 20% from 3 at volume you better also have somebody that shoots 45% to help balance them out.

Hope this makes sense and doesn't muddy the waters further. If you look at the final stats from last year's game maybe that will help explain it better:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1d9KGJ4z4CeS3KLool0d8pofIfdVSKlVJBrc4T2cxWaQ/edit#gid=0 Here the top set of numbers are the actual numbers your team got in each category. The second set of numbers is the fantasy points you've accumulated in each category based on comparison with the other fantasy players.

Most of us (except for Cardinal Razz ) try to be helpful to newbies! Hope you'll join us. I know you watch a lot of games so think it would be fun for you.

OK, I'll play if you have room. I like the idea of restricting the teams to 10 players.

OK, I'll play if you have room. I like the idea of restricting the teams to 10 players.

Absolutely! The more we are the merrier we shall be!

I guess this means that I need to start plotting.

Also, Matt and Howee, I’m still hoping that both of y’all will show up!

I don’t know if I’ll have the time this year but if you need someone, I can see if I can make it work!

We need you! Like a flower needs the rain, you know we need you! (ok, I know that song was before your time but it was a good one) It would be really nice if you would play IMO. It's always more fun with more people. You could let me know if you need help with lineups if you get in a bind (like at finals time) and I would help you out if that would make a difference.

Also for everyone, Please make your settings on rebkells such that when you receive a PM, rebbies sends you an email. That way we don't lose track of anyone. [Click on profile at the top and make sure 'notify me on new private message'] is set to yes. Hit 'submit' at the bottom to save]

Howee says he's got too much going on. I sent Matt a PM but he hasn't picked it up.

Yeah, I've been pretty swamped lately but would be down to play again - really will not have time to look at anything before the end of the month so hopefully the draft is after that or else I'm gonna be relying on the kindness of strangers Laughing

What are the odds that there's a site with decent stats from last season?

The scoring may seem complicated at first but is in fact fairly simple.
Yes, I know. It's very simple. Make sure Howee's totals never exceed Myrtle's or Cardi-Boi's scores. Laughing

Howee you crack me up! But I'm happy to see you join us. Gives me somebody to beat on Cool

So right now we have 9 players.: me, Cardinal, tbinta, pureform, adam, linkster, reluctant lynx(but we know she really wants to play), matt, and Howee. Good crew! Did I miss anybody? Newkid can’t play this year but she’s ‘volunteered’ to pick the order out of a hat.

We have one more spot open. I always think those who watch a lot of college ball should join us – like summertime, mzone, NoDakotaSt, shades or art - or maybe zvyn, GEF or Stephen Shirley would like to give it another go. Come on out of the woodwork you guys! Put your money where your mouth is. Virtual money that is….

Shall we draft next weekend? What time(s) work/don’t work for you all? Remember we’re all across the continent so not too early for us West Coasters and not too late for the Easterners. It would be good to get the first 6 rounds in at one sitting, then we can do a rolling draft for the rest if anyone gets too tired or Pure drinks too much to continue after that. So you probably want to set aside at least two hours. If everyone comes prepared and shows up on time, we can get through quite a bit fairly fast.

It seems everyone is ok with my proposed changes so let’s make those changes (Cardinal, do you want to do that in your post?)

Matt, I think Ncaa.com and yahoo.com both have some stats. Also wbbstate is back in business and has a lot of good stuff if you want to subscribe for it. I don’t know what it costs but think Cardinal is on it so perhaps he can tell us.

Wahoo! I can’t wait to get the season rolling.

PS IMPORTANT. Please everybody do set your profile to send you an email when you get a PM. Also be aware that there is a limit of 100 messages in your in box and sent box in PM land.

ok, thinking about the draft. I think last year we started out as a rolling draft and then tried to finish it off all at once in a sit down. If that works better, once newkid posts the order, we can get started and go to the end of round one, then I'd like to wait to start round two until Wednesday (?) in case a 10th person wants to join. Then, starting Wednesday, we can continue 'rolling' until the sit down time over the weekend where we can hopefully finish it off.

Once you make your pick, send a PM to the person behind you in the draft that they are now up. During the rolling part, there is no pressure to get your pick in immediately, but if possible do so within a few hours. If you are going to be away from all computers on retreat, you might want to PM a short list to someone else who is several picks away from you and let them post your pick for you.

If we notice someone making an illegal pick (player has transferred or is out for the season with injury, or some other problem), please post something to that effect, and the dumbie Razz that made the pick will immediately get to remedy their error before we go on. This is a 'friendly' game so if you notice a problem, let's help each other out.

Does this work for everybody? And still need a sit down time over next weekend. I'll propose 7 pm Eastern Sunday Nov 5 as the sit down time. In any case it can't be later than that. I think sometime we actually got it all done in the rolling part and never had to 'meet'.

So recap: Rolling draft until a sit-down to finish it off next weekend. Very important that you remember to PM the next player to pick so we keep it moving without continually having to check the thread.

Rules have been updated as requested, Myrtle. I'll probably get on making the spreadsheet this week at some point....

Anyway, WBBState has some great stats, but honestly, it's probably not worth it from a cost standpoint. I got the reduced early subscription rate, but now it costs a whopping $39.99. (what in hades.)

You can use my coupon so I get a referral bonus; however, there are no discounts on display at the moment. Once November rolls around, I'll see if anything turns up. HOOP9-1231.

I gave it quite a bit of thought but I really don't think I have the time. January in particular is very busy as I am on the road and lose track of just about everything. I appreciate the changes that were made, but I felt real bad last year when I ran into some time issues at the end of the year and couldn't get back involved. It is a fun game. If my schedule is more flexible in the future I'll get back in.
