That guy would surely be moving the team to Houston, where he has the Toyota Center for them to play in and the revival of the Comets would be a big PR win. Doesn't make sense to me that he'd move them to Vegas if he was involved.

Given it was leaked weeks after the shooting it also doesn't make much sense to me that that would've led to a delay in naming the owners or officially announcing the sale. I guess they've just managed to keep it quiet (or only let it out to the right people on background, so they're not printing it). Hopefully it's not because anything's going wrong with the sale, because it seems like the Stars are out at this point. They'd be desperately scrambling to find an alternative.

Possible Las Vegas move excites young WNBA star Kelsey Plum

Quote:
Plum was excited for the potential move to Las Vegas, which is closer to Southern California, where she grew up.

“My family and friends can get to more games,” Plum said. “Getting to Texas wasn’t the easiest thing for them. Now it’s a short flight or drive for them to come watch.”

She doesn’t know much about Laimbeer.

I think it's too early to reach conclusions about Plum vs. Jefferson except as to dribbling facility and foot speed, which favor Jefferson. Scoring ability is a big factor for the Vegas Vagabonds, and it's difficult to ignore the fact that Plum is the leading scorer in NCAA history. Both players had nagging injuries for much of this past season, and both are still green. It remains to be seen who will become the more productive scorer.

I'd keep Jefferson, Plum and KMac and attempt to wrangle a scoring big. Maybe the table tennis balls will answer that need.

I am guessing the WNBA (and maybe the NBA as well) is still doing some due diligence on the new owner as we speak. If that is the case, then could explain why the WNBA won't reveal who the buyer is until the person(s) gets the OK to team ownership.

Still, this might be a good time to speculate who the potential buyer is. Since the news article have indicated that the Maloofs nor the owner of the new Las Vegas Golden Knights NHL team are involved, so they are both ruled out.

I wonder if the guy who runs the Landry's chain of restaurants [cannot recall his name right now] and recently became the new owner of the NBA's Houston Rockets is the potential buyer. As I recall he owns the Golden Nugget Casino in downtown Vegas.

If we are speculating, what about Master P? Has net worth over $300 million (according to Wikipedia), has real basketball history including playing in college and making preseason squads of two NBA teams before his music career took off, and launched that coed basketball league in Vegas a few months back.

As soon as I finished sending my previous post, Master P did come to my mind. OTOH, I have yet to see the product of his new co-ed pro b-ball league, so I do not know how serious he is. If he is involved with the new Vegas WNBA franchise, I would have to assume that he would be an investor, but not the primary owner.

"Pipeline" to what?

There is no league, there are no players or rosters. I put the likelihood of a single league game every being played at close to zero.

And do you see the WNBA as a "pipeline" to the coed league, or vice versa? How's that going to work?

Just some technicalities.

Williams has shown no three-point shot, whereas Nolan is dangerous beyond the arc.

Distance-wise, Williams is as much a Las Vegas hometown girl as a San Francisco high school player is a Los Angeles hometown girl, or as a Boston high school player is a Baltimore hometown girl.

If we're looking for Nolan 2.0 in this draft it would be Deshields not G. Williams.

Also I can't see Laimbeer keeping both Jefferson and Plum.

The most punk rock thing to do would be trade both, which seems unlikely, but I doubt he keeps both.

If I was guessing who he would keep of the two it would be Plum. Plum has the passion and potential to take a huge step forward her sophomore season.

I love Jefferson and would be thrilled to get her in NY, but Jefferson if she comes back healthy is a known commodity. She is a good floor general with an outside shot, who is a pesky defender for someone her size, but she is never getting any bigger, and Laimbeer isn't a fan of small guards. Yes he used a smaller line up in NY becuase none of the young SF panned out, but Prince, Hartley and Rodgers are not small, they are medium size for for the 2 and decent size for the 1. Jefferson is FLB size, just not big enough for what BL likes. Plum if she hits her shots with more consistency and develops into being a mediocre defender (as opposed to a liability on D) will be more to his liking.

Yup. In no way shape or form is Plum better or will ever be better than Jefferson.

Agree with the first part, not so much with the second. And Plum is extremely marketable, which imo is very important for a franchise trying to establish itself in a new market.

Why? Because Plum is white and Jefferson isn’t? Uh huh.

Welcome, and thanks for posting the link ...

And the link makes me nervous, though the lack of response from MGM might mean that's where the team will land. But still, why won't anyone talk? Why hadn't the WNBA reached out to the mayor? Why all the secrecy?

Scary ...

I wondered about that too, but perhaps the tragic shooting comes into play?

People are really making too big of a deal over Plum's rookie season IMO. Give her time.

Don’t be an idiot dude. Asking if someone thinks Plum is more marketable because she’s white is a valid question. And by the way, knocking someone else’s question in a post... if you don’t like the question, be a man (or woman) and ignore it instead of going out of your way to try and slam the person asking the question. It just makes you look like a joke.

PS, I am a university grad and I guarantee you I’ve travelled the world and been to more places and have had more life experiences than probably 95% of the people that post on rebkell. Not that that had anything to do with anything I posted. Yawn.

Now that that’s settled, maybe we can all continue discussing the Vegas team and it’s players like we were doing...

I agree that Plum's race is a factor in her marketing ... it's a racist society, after all (and I'm an old white guy).

But I'm still not convinced that a small guard who relies on her quickness and speed, and is coming off a major knee injury, is guaranteed to have a better career than Kelsey Plum.

First, Plum could adjust and improve significantly, a la Becky Hammon.

Second, Jefferson may never be able to play at the level she once did if her injury is serious.

Third, even if Jefferson can play at her previous level, she's still listed at 5-6, which means she's 5-4, and in postseason, would create serious matchup issues against teams constituted like L.A. or Minnesota. (A better defender than Plum, of course, but this isn't about comparison -- it's about MoJeff's ultimate value.)

I think you need to keep them both as long as possible to find out just how good each is, and might be -- and since the team is going nowhere in 2018, what's the downside?

Potentially, diminishing value. Right now, teams might just think Plum had a rocky first season in an awkward situation - a la Diggins - and still be willing to give up a reasonable amount for her. They might see Jefferson as someone who's had one year with some niggling injuries that never got the proper rest or treatment until after the season. If Plum sucks next season, or Jefferson gets hurt again (or looks notably slower), then the trades you could've made might not be there any more.

Excellent point ... but that assumes you could get something worthwhile now.

It would be hard to trade a top six pick for either one at this point, given the uncertainty, and below that, it would be a killer if the player you traded turned into a legit starter and you got a rotation player or worse.
