I figured every other team already has a 2018 thread, so lets make one for the newest team in the WNBA.

Things we do know:
1. San Antonio has relocated to Las Vegas but the official announcement has yet to be made.

2. Bill Laimbeer is leaving NY for as of now unknown reasons and will become head coach and general manager of the new Las Vegas team effective immediately I presume.

3. Las Vegas will have a lottery pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft. Most likely the #1 over all pick which will be determined once the Draft Lottery takes place. A’ja Wilson from South Carolina will be a no brainer as LV’s number 1 pick if they win the lottery. If not, they could and should pick Gabby Williams from Uconn as she is a phenomenal athlete, a type of big guard that Laimbeer loves who is reminiscent of Deanna Nolan in a lot of ways athletically. Plus she’s a Vegas home girl and starting off a new franchise in a new city, a hometown star is a must have commodity to draw fans and more attention.

Things we don’t yet know:
1. What will be the teams name? Will they keep the Stars name or hopefully change it up since the name Starzz/Stars has basically been a curse for the franchises lifeless past.

2. Who actually purchased the team and where will they will play.

3. Who will Laimbeer hire as his assistant coaches? Will he bring Katie Smith along as his assistant or does she get an offer to be New York’s new head coach.

4. Will Laimbeer completely blow up the current Stars roster? He never liked small guards so is Moriah Jefferson safe?

Personally I’d keep Jefferson as the starting point guard along side Kayla McBride as the starting shooting guard, trade Kelsey Plum for whoever picks Gabby Williams. And then add A’ja Wilson if LV wins the lottery. Having Williams and Jefferson together is instant chemistry. A starting lineup of Jefferson/McBride/Williams/Wilson/Harrison isn’t too shabby. McBride and Williams are both 5’11. Is Williams too short to play small forward? She’s only 1” from being 6’. She’s a lot like Alyssa Thomas. Outstanding athlete but without much of a long range jump shot. If Thomas can play power forward with ease like she did this past season for the Sun, Williams can easily play the roll of small forward successfully. Jefferson and McBride and both great 3 point shooters so that opens up a lot of space for Williams to drive to the basket which is her specialty. I think that starting line up would work very well.

Laimbeer just utilized “smaller guards” this season. It wouldn’t be wise to trade Jefferson or McBride, especially for lesser talents when they have bigger holes. Jefferson put up solid numbers even on an injured knee, and she’s still a solid defender and good shooter. Quality > quantity. However, if he can get Williams and Wilson out of this draft by trading Plum for Williams, he’d be a genius. They also have #13, which could be Greenwell, or even Nurse or Vivians if either slip. Or he can use the pick as a sweetener for a trade.

Anybody know the status of Jefferson's knee? If it was good seems like we would have heard something. I have a feeling she is not likely to be the future point guard of the Stars. Stars would be crazy to trade Plum at this point in her career. If the Stars get the #1 pick they could be really competitive next year.

I’m not sure any team would trade a lottery pick for Plum. If Vegas gets Wilson, they should try the three guard line up, if it doesn’t work move Plum to the 6th woman role. At the very least Plum is better backup at PG than Colson. Wilson is who this team needs, along with Bench upgrades. Another year in the Lottery and this team should have solid foundation.

Not the only one, but you're in the minority

I’d like to see Plum’s agent try to pull what did she with Riley and VJ with Bill Laimbeer...

As to the identity of the crypto-owner, I favor the casino theory.

"Come to our casino to see: the guy who gets eaten by tigers . . . the 80 year old singer who once had a hit in the 50's . . . the washed-up actress who dances with 25 nude males . . . the magician who walks on air . . . and, for the main attraction, Bill's Basketball Babes."

So, which casinos have a basketball court?

It seems likely that the owner has big bucks and made Bill an financial offer he couldn't refuse. Assume this plutocratic owner could have bought any WNBA coach. Why Bill Laimbeer? Why not Reeve, Agler or Miller? Is this because Bill is the best WNBA coach to develop an amorphous group of young players for a championship?

Yup. In no way shape or form is Plum better or will ever be better than Jefferson.

Oh, ok, guess that's settled then. Better let Kelsey know. She should probably just start looking for an office job somewhere. What was her college major? Rolling Eyes

By the way, Alyssa Thomas is 6'2" or 6'3" and physically larger and stronger than Williams. She (unlike Williams) is actually the right size for a WNBA forward. She and Williams are really not at all the same player.

Agree with the first part, not so much with the second. And Plum is extremely marketable, which imo is very important for a franchise trying to establish itself in a new market.

Jefferson had the ninth highest selling jersey in the league. They will likely have the #1 pick. I think they’ll be fine marketing wise.

I wonder how many of those jersey sales are to UConn fans and how that translates to ticket sales in Las Vegas. Is there some huge UConn alumni/fan base in Nevada of which I am unaware? (Those jersey sales didn't ensure attendance success in San Antonio, obviously.)

I expect South Carolina fans will buy truckloads of Wilson jerseys for the first two or three years too. Tickets? That's probably a different matter.

Why? Because Plum is white and Jefferson isn’t? Uh huh.

Plum has an amazing bubbly personality. I haven't seen enough of MoJeff to know if she does as well but have the impression she's much more subdued. I think if MoJeff can get healthy and if Plum can find more defense, they will both be decent players in the league. Since Plum's defense is suspect, I would think SFO/LFO/SFO would prefer MoJeff even though she's tiny. And I would think he would be happy with a Colson type backup...so yeah, I expect Plum to be on the market. And no, I don't think Seattle will give #5 for her even though they would love to have her... so he will need to be creative. IMO, it will be a multi-player/pick deal.

Never underestimate SFO he has a way of getting good players for nothing. Or maybe Reeve will be in a mood to give him some nice assets for nothing again.
Not that I think Plum is nothing but it wouldn't surprise me if SFo gets a nice return for her.

Welcome, and thanks for posting the link ...

And the link makes me nervous, though the lack of response from MGM might mean that's where the team will land. But still, why won't anyone talk? Why hadn't the WNBA reached out to the mayor? Why all the secrecy?

Scary ...

Dont think bill wants another guard who cant shoot , I do not see the Deanna Nolan comparison either in no way shape or form . Just my opinion

I wondered about that too, but perhaps the tragic shooting comes into play? If negotiations had been ongoing when that occurred, and MGM was going to buy the Stars, it might have given MGM pause since that massacre could have a very negative effect on their core gaming/hotel business for months if not years to come. Buying a WNBA team may not be as appealing as it was earlier and that in turn would put the league in a terrible spot to try to salvage a deal that people are already aware of.

maybe it's not really Vegas? Somebody threw that out to throw us all off track...and it snowballed from there.

I am guessing the WNBA (and maybe the NBA as well) is still doing some due diligence on the new owner as we speak. If that is the case, that could explain why the WNBA won't reveal who the buyer is until the person(s) gets the OK to team ownership.

Still, this might be a good time to speculate who the potential buyer is. Since the news article have indicated that the Maloofs nor the owner of the new Las Vegas Golden Knights NHL team are involved, so they are both ruled out.

I wonder if the guy who runs the Landry's chain of restaurants [cannot recall his name right now] and recently became the new owner of the NBA's Houston Rockets is the potential buyer. As I recall he owns the Golden Nugget Casino in downtown Vegas.
