good bye little guards (only kind of serious with trades below, but don't hate it.)

Plum and #13 to Seattle for #5

Jefferson to NY for Boyd and L. Allen

Vegas drafts Wilson #1 and Deshields #5

Vegas
Boyd/L. Allen
McBride/Colson
Deshields/A. Montgomery or Hamby or Coffey (2 of the 3)
Wilson/Burdick/Dos Santos
Harrison/Alexander

Seems like a Laimbeer kind of team

When it comes to the WNBA, franchises go where there's an owner ready to spend the money

Quote:

It has felt for a few years that Spurs Sports & Entertainment was losing interest in the Stars, who have had the worst record in the league the past three seasons, haven't reached the playoffs since 2014, and haven't posted a winning record since 2012.

I've got the Thrill on my legitimate names list as well.

But kind of surprised no one is on board with the Las Vegas Nomi Malones.

If the MGM Grand is involved it will be

The Las Vegas Grand

Then they could be the Lions (or Lionesses) after the lion that roars at the start of MGM movies.

If they were going that direction they'd surely just call them the Las Vegas Showgirls. Fewer copyright question marks. Wink

IMO getting Bill as the new headcoach and GM is a sign that they are serious about this team.

Three cities that should have WNBA franchises.

http://www.excellesports.com/news/three-cities-have-wnba-franchises/

Agree on the Bay Area & Knoxville, but not Charlotte. And why not Houston & Portland first over Charlotte for a returning franchise?

And, Bill wouldn't have taken the job if he didn't see the potential of the team.

Never saw this team abandonment coming... Sad

Thought about that too, but does that mean they have to bring in Congreaves or Leedham for the staff?

Sophia Young, best Stars draft pick ever. Even better than the #2 pick in 2007.

Maybe Bill will keep Riley, she played for him in Detroit when they won a championship. Don't know if she has any coaching skills. Wonder what her contract with SAS was for for, maybe just one year same as VJ. The buyer must have offered Bill some big bucks and you would think there must be some other connection there as well unless Bill was letting it be known he was looking for a change. Is there a big enough fan base in Vegas to support a WNBA team in the summer with NBA summer stuff going on there at the same time?

Exactly. Many of us have beef with her personal opinions, but she was a talented and successful basketball player.

(if I were in the mood to be petty, I'd point out that the #2 pick in 2007 was rather instrumental in a certain trade, and also possesses a championship ring)

Las Vegas is shown as being the 29th largest metropolitan area in the US.

That puts it ahead of Indianapolis (#34) and Hartford (using that for the Sun) (#47). And there is the tourism factor and casino factor. Smallest WNBA metro area ever was Tulsa (#55) followed by Salt Lake City (#48 ).

Hope it is a casino-with-a-small-arena deal like the Sun where they comp gamblers with free tickets, versus playing in the NBA-sized T-Mobile arena or MGM Grand arena.

Las Vegas power brokers unaware of WNBA team’s move to valley

Quote:
MGM CEO Jim Murren said in an October 2016 interview that he was pursuing an NBA team that he could move to Las Vegas to join the NHL’s Golden Knights as anchor tenants at T-Mobile.

#1 2017 Kelsey Plum
#2 2016 Moriah Jefferson
#3 2014 Kayla McBride
#2 2007 traded for Becky Hammon
#4 2006 Sophia Young
#4 2005 Kendra Wecker

I'm surprised a NBA franchise is divesting itself from the WNBA. That is not the greatest sign. Las Vegas should be a decent place for a franchise. Casinos will buy all the tickets and hand them out as door prizes and casino perks. As long as someone pays for the tickets it makes financial sense. However the team will need to play near the Strip for that model to work. Good luck to them!
Will this be the only shakeup this off season? Atlanta and Dallas both had disastrous seasons (the reasons why have been discussed on this forum many times) and were already operating on thin margins. They are not mentioned much, but the Chicago franchise has serious issues as well. Overhead costs and operating expenses and government taxes are all significantly higher in Illinois than in the rest of middle America, making the cost of doing business there exceptionally high. The Stars moving does help make a mockery of Borders' claims of amazing success during her tenure though. Healthy successful franchises generally speaking don't relocate.
