With the new location, I think they should drop the Stars/Starzz moniker. We don't want Las Vegas Lucky Starz or Poker Stars.

The lottery was cancelled a month ago, so these negotiations have been ongoing for longer than that but haven't even advanced enough to name the potential buyer or city.

This isn't that expensive a deal. If it's not any further along yet after a month or two, it sounds far from a done deal. Other than "we've been in negotiations with a buyer", the rest of that Stars statement is meaningless gibberish. I don't get a warm feeling from that.

And I still think that if they were truly confident the franchise would still exist next year, there's no reason not to go ahead with the lottery order draw.

I'm worried the team might fold also. Though Magic buying the Sparks happened in January. So what happens to the #1 pick if they fold??

Their new arena is under construction. I think it's a year or two away.

If the team is actually being sold, and not "OMG we have to find someone to take over quick!" then spinning it will be easy

Yeah, she'll be like oohing and awing over how great the new ownership is and it will be a wonderful opportunity in a new city and, and, and...she's the master, er mistress, of spin.

He was willing to buy the Sparks before the new arena was built.

He may have been willing to buy the Stars, but ESPN is now reporting:

WNBA's San Antonio Stars have deal for Las Vegas relocation

Quote:
The sale and relocation now hinge on a final approval from the NBA and WNBA Board of Governors, the source said. The sides expect the deal, which has been in the works for some time, to be OK'd because the team will be moved to Las Vegas, according to the source.

Assuming the accuracy of that reporting, that sounds a lot more positive than what the current owners said.

I wonder if one or more NBA owners is objecting to Vegas as a location.

If it is Las Vegas I'll be curious as to where they will play, I seriously doubt it would be the new T-Mobile arena on the Strip where the Golden Nights hockey team plays. The Thomas & Mack at UNLV is a possibility, but I think the best location would be at the Orleans Casino. It is a 9500 seat facility that has hosted several college basketball tournaments including 2 men's holiday tournaments each year as well as the West Coast Conference and Western Athletic Conference men's and women's tournaments annually. There is also the MGM Grand Garden Arena on the Strip which has lost business since the T-Mobile Arena opened.

Considering how most NBA owners seem to care less about the WNBA not sure there'd enough objection to matter and keep the team from moving.

Do wish some Bay area ownership was ready for a team. I'm hard pressed to see a W team in Vegas as an attraction but if an owner is willing to put in the effort to make a team an attraction better to be there then in a place where the owners don't care anymore .... or worse yet have the team fold.

Wish I had something more positive to say for Stars fans .... So Sorry SA fans Sad

Isn't "Vega" the Spanish word for "Star"? So, I would not be surprised if they keep the nickname.

Those that follow these things closer than me: Is Las Vegas REALLY a supportive market for women's basketball? At first blush I would think not and see this as jumping at the fad of moving teams there. The Raiders and Golden Knights are there, so why not a WNBA team? With not NBA close by, save for Salt Lake City, sorta. I just don't see it as a long term solution.

I was hoping for San Francisco or Houston, maybe Orlando or Portland, but Vegas? Really? Perhaps that was the only buyer and it was Vegas or Bust....still going to be worried about this team surviving past the honeymoon phase.

Any chance the Maloofs are the buyers?

I wonder if Gabby Williams would like to get drafted by this Vegas team.

They are minority owners in the LV NHL team I believe.

It could well be dependent on who the buyers are. If the new owners include one of the casinos - which seems distinctly possible - then they might be doing it in part to fill their own arena space for 17+ dates each summer. I was thinking Thomas & Mack instinctively, but if the owners already have a viable venue they won't be paying out for somewhere else to play instead.

Quote:
T-Mobile Arena is a multi-use indoor arena on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. Opened on April 6, 2016, the arena is a joint venture between MGM Resorts International and the Anschutz Entertainment Group.

Capacity
Overall: 20,000
Basketball: 18,000
Boxing/MMA: 20,000
Ice hockey: 17,500
Concerts: 12,000–20,000

Tenants
Vegas Golden Knights (NHL) (2017–present)
Ultimate Fighting Championship (2017–present)

Quote:
The Vegas Golden Knights are a professional ice hockey team based in the Las Vegas metropolitan area. The team began play in the 2017–18 NHL season, and is a member of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team is owned by Black Knight Sports & Entertainment, a consortium led by Bill Foley, and plays its home games at T-Mobile Arena on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada.

Owner(s)
Bill Foley (70%)
Maloof family (30%)

This is my guess.

At first glance Vegas might seem like a weird location for a WNBA team, but their are a lot of locals who might like the idea of having something for themselves to take pride in, something geared to the residents as opposed to the tourists.

And on the flip side Vegas is becoming more of a family oriented destination and all of the other entertainment options are very expensive so taking your family of four out to a sporting event for 25% the cost of your other options might be a nice night out during your vacation.

And it'll be a test market for a potential future NBA team.

No, it's Spanish for meadow. Star is "estrella".

Stars is so damn generic they can probably keep it.

If it is Thomas & Mack the team will have to take a lengthy road trip when the NBA Summer League is at UNLV. Unless that is moving to the T Mobile Arena? I haven’t heard anything.

Las Vegas has been the home to WCC men's and women's postseason tournaments, and everyone has liked it, including the women's coaches.

I'm hoping it's a casino owner or casino tie-in, like Mohegan, so that the franchise is supported by other aspects of the business.

Las Vegas is home to one of the top girls' high school programs in the country, Centennial, and Bishop Gorman has been very good as well, so there is some hope for attracting young girls and families. Don't know about the LBGT community ...

I am a little surprised they let it leak before the deal was done, but if it's just the Board of Governors left, and all the other details are taken care of, it should go through. Hate to see it derailed at this point ...

Yeah, once it hits that point it's usually a fait accompli. The league front office would rarely let something get that far without knowing it's going to pass. In fact, although I doubt the WNBA has the wherewithal to do it, things often get 'leaked' at this stage just to see if there'd be any public backlash. But I don't think a sports team in Las Vegas is anywhere near as controversial as it might once have been.

If they are moving to a specific casino's property, it'll be interesting to see if that casino has a sportsbook and if they put any rules in place about WNBA gambling on site.

Was there any talk that the Stars were in trouble? I thought of them as a solid franchise.
