“I don’t know what social injustices have been,” Ditka said. “Muhammad Ali rose to the top. Jesse Owens is one of the classiest individuals that ever lived. I mean, you can say, ‘Are you (saying) everything is based on color?’ I don’t see it that way. I think that you have to be color blind in this country. You’ve got to look at a person for what he is and what he stands for and how he produces, not by the color of his skin. That has never had anything to do with anything.”
Ditka said there are opportunities for everyone in the United States, regardless of race, religion, creed, color, nationality “if you want to work, if you want to try, if you want to put effort into yourself. I think you can accomplish anything, and we have watched that throughout our history of our country. People rise to the top and they became very influential people in our country by doing the right things.” |

This is coming from someone who lived through Jim Crow. Let that sink in.

The Mike Ditka statement is representative of the general inadequacy of public schools to educate the entire student body about the issues and history of PoC in this country. The news media for so long, have been complicit in driving a one-dimensional narrative about PoC in this country. Movies, magazines, books, videos overwhelmingly stick to the narrative. Progress has been made but yet so far still to go.
Oppressors and those complicit with them (knowingly or not) have no right to determine what is oppression and what is not. |

There are plenty of people who never played football who have this same idea.

That's been obvious for a long time and is displayed again every time he opens his yap.

I love the Mike Ditka that coached the Bears and inspired all those "Da Bears!" sketches with George Wendt.
This version of Ditka is just embarrassing. |
