I'd put these finals in the middle. 2009 will always be the one to be with 2008 as the worst(IMO). Edited my list to put the 2013 Finals at the bottom. Didn't think it could have possibly been worse than 2008.

1. 2009 Mercury def. Fever 3-2
2. 1999 Comets def. Liberty 2-1
3. 2007 Mercury def. Shock 3-2
4. 2005 Shock def. Monarchs 3-2
5. 1998 Comets def. Mercury 2-1
6. 2004 Storm def. Sun 2-1
7. 2003 Shock def. Sparks 2-1
8. 2012 Fever def. Lynx 3-1
9. 2005 Monarchs def. Sun 3-1
10. 2002 Sparks def. Liberty 2-0
11. 2001 Sparks def. Sting 2-0
12. 2011 Lynx def. Dream 3-0
13. 1997 Comets def. Liberty 1-0
14. 2000 Comets def. Liberty 2-0
15. 2010 Storm def. Dream 3-0
16. 2008 Shock def. Silverstars 3-0
17. 2013 Lynx def. Dream 3-0

The 2015 finals scored a 6, tied for 11th best finals series ever.

Three games decided by exactly six points hurt the series under the Hollinger system.

Earlier series

Minnesota- LA: -7
Phoenix-Tulsa: -26
Minnesota-Phoenix: -3

New York-Washington: 13
Indiana-Chicago: -4
New York-Indiana: -11

Let's see here, Finals start with 16. One game difference in the series is -5. 5/6 of a point for each regular season game won is 23 for Minnesota and 22 for Los Angeles. The average score difference (using the >5 = 13 modifier) was 8, which means -32. No overtimes, but three road wins is +6.

16-5+23+22-32+6=

A great finals caps what was up until then a very lackluster playoffs, with every series scoring negative points and all but one scoring -20 or worse.

Atlanta-Seattle -28
Indiana-Phoenix -26

Chicago-Atlanta -24
New York-Phoenix -20

Minnesota-Phoenix -21
Los Angeles-Chicago -7

The two blowouts lowered it for me. Otherwise it was a good finals.

Despite this year's finals going 5 games, the series just didn't live up to the hype from last year. Close games, but low scoring & sloppy play ranked this year's finals on the low side.

1. 2009 Mercury def. Fever 3-2
2. 1999 Comets def. Liberty 2-1
3. 2007 Mercury def. Shock 3-2
4. 2005 Shock def. Monarchs 3-2
5. 2015 Lynx def. Fever 3-2
6. 1998 Comets def. Mercury 2-1
7. 2004 Storm def. Sun 2-1
8. 2003 Shock def. Sparks 2-1
9. 2012 Fever def. Lynx 3-1
10. 2005 Monarchs def. Sun 3-1
11. 2016 Sparks def. Lynx 3-2
12. 2002 Sparks def. Liberty 2-0
13. 2001 Sparks def. Sting 2-0
14. 2017 Lynx def. Sparks 3-2
15. 2014 Mercury def. Sky 3-0
16. 2011 Lynx def. Dream 3-0
17. 1997 Comets def. Liberty 1-0
18. 2000 Comets def. Liberty 2-0
19. 2010 Storm def. Dream 3-0
20. 2008 Shock def. Silverstars 3-0
21. 2013 Lynx def. Dream 3-0

The Hollinger Method has this year's finals not quite as good as last year's

There was some sloppy play, but I think most of it was due to two of the top defensive teams in the league battling it out. Most of the errors were forced errors due to solid defense.

I would rank this one up there near the top, along with last season's.

The intensity was off the chart, close games with furious comebacks, and a great story line with it mirroring last season's finals. Add in the end result of a fourth championship (and a record 5th for one of the players) and arguably hoisting this Lynx team up to be the greatest dynasty in league history, and I can't but rank it anywhere other than near the top.

I'd say 4th IMHO...low scoring and a lot of racing out to big leads and chasing...yes high intensity but a lot of double digit lead time for both clubs

1st 2009 (What I call the series that saved the league, Indiana and PHX in a donnybrook that seemed every game was down to the wire)

2nd 2016 (Would be first if it wasn't for the refs and the structure of the game calls deciding the last two)

3rd 1999 (The shot is the shot is the shot)

4th 2017

It was the 8th highest scoring overall, slightly on the low side among those contested with a 24 second shot clock. By points per team game:

93.1 2009
90.0 2007
83.0 2011
83.0 2010
79.8 2014
77.7 2016
76.2 2013
75.6 2017
75.0 2012
73.9 2006
71.4 2015
71.3 2001
70.3 2003
68.7 2008
67.3 2002
66.5 1998
66.3 2004
65.8 2000
65.4 2005
62.3 1999
58.0 1997

Note that higher scoring isn't always better. The 1999 finals are often mentioned among the best despite being the lowest scoring multi-game final. The deciding game that year had a 59-47 final score.

Other than 2008, all the 24 second clock series were higher scoring than any of the 30 second clock series.

"High scoring" most likely means poor defense, kinda like in an All Star game.

Don't believe anyone will deny that the emphasis with 2007 & 2009 Phoenix teams were outscoring opponents and not putting effort into defense.

I'll always remember Gaines saying in 2012 that "playing defense makes you tired", so I believe that was the early Mercury mantra before Griner and Brondello came on board.

Sweeps never rank that high. But it was nice to have two different teams in the finals. The blowouts in Games 1 & 3 keep this year's in the bottom half.

1. 2009 Mercury def. Fever 3-2
2. 1999 Comets def. Liberty 2-1
3. 2007 Mercury def. Shock 3-2
4. 2006 Shock def. Monarchs 3-2
5. 2015 Lynx def. Fever 3-2
6. 1998 Comets def. Mercury 2-1
7. 2004 Storm def. Sun 2-1
8. 2003 Shock def. Sparks 2-1
9. 2012 Fever def. Lynx 3-1
10. 2005 Monarchs def. Sun 3-1
11. 2016 Sparks def. Lynx 3-2
12. 2002 Sparks def. Liberty 2-0
13. 2001 Sparks def. Sting 2-0
14. 2017 Lynx def. Sparks 3-2

This year's final scored a 6 on the Hollinger scale. A let down from the semis, which each scored a 15.

Like I said in the other thread before the Finals, we'd seen the 'team with half-fit Delle Donne scrape into the Finals' story before. Turned out pretty similar to when she was in Chicago.

Always a shame when the series where more people finally start to pay attention turns out to be a bit of a damp squib. I'm sure Staley and Team USA are happy, though.

I'd rank these Finals in the middle. Only one game was close(Game 4). Going 5 games always gives it a boost.

1. 2009 Mercury def. Fever 3-2
2. 1999 Comets def. Liberty 2-1
3. 2007 Mercury def. Shock 3-2
4. 2006 Shock def. Monarchs 3-2
5. 2015 Lynx def. Fever 3-2
6. 1998 Comets def. Mercury 2-1
7. 2004 Storm def. Sun 2-1
8. 2003 Shock def. Sparks 2-1
9. 2012 Fever def. Lynx 3-1
10. 2005 Monarchs def. Sun 3-1
11. 2016 Sparks def. Lynx 3-2
12. 2019 Mystics def. Sun 3-2
13. 2002 Sparks def. Liberty 2-0
14. 2001 Sparks def. Sting 2-0
15. 2017 Lynx def. Sparks 3-2
16. 2018 Storm def. Mystics 3-0
17. 2014 Mercury def. Sky 3-0
18. 2011 Lynx def. Dream 3-0
19. 1997 Comets def. Liberty 1-0
20. 2000 Comets def. Liberty 2-0

Hollinger method scores this series at 10. Just your average WNBA finals.

I dislike the Sparks as much as anybody, but the 2016 Finals was one of the best. I guess I didn't take the time to read the reasoning behind the rankings, but I've watched every Finals since 2002 and 2016 is up there in the top 5. 2012 Finals up there in top 5. It doesn't help that people commenting on this are voting based on what teams they like or don't like.... Rolling Eyes
