Ok, Bob Corker is not one of my favorite Senators, and I would never call him a moderate or centrist, but he certainly is not a wacko or extremist. He's conservative, but he generally acts responsibly and has respect for his job and the institution. Most people think that , despite his explanations, this decision is a result of his reaction to the dysfunction in the Senate and his lack of stomach for a nasty primary challenge from a far right crazy.
Over the past thirty years the GOP purged all (but Collins) of the true moderates, especially from the NE and Pacific NW. If now they're going to purge true but rational conservatives in favor of the Roy Moores of the world, we are all royally screwed, and the future of the Senate is depressing.
Six years ago I might have cheered Corker's departure. I'm not cheering today.
BTW, that this slightly improves the chances of blowhard Chuck Schumer becoming majority leader doesn't exactly give me a warm feeling either.
