Some players put real effort into defence, some players have great defensive instincts, and some players have great physical attributes for defence like quickness & length. All 3 of those things together is very rare.
In LW's case I don't think it has ever been effort that lets her down, and that's the primary thing a player actually has control over.

Whalen might not be up to guarding Grayor Sims due to her recent injury. Gray is strong and fast as is Sims. How about Bronson guarding Gray.

Chelsea Gray is fast?
She doesn't have the speed of say Sims, Boyd, jefferson and a lot of other faster point guards. She is, however quick and has great court vision and angle recognition. She knows how to put herself into optimum defensive position. She is also faster than she appears to be - as i stated in a previous post on another thread. It is hard to judge how fast she really is because she always tries to hide her actual speed. If she was really as slow as she appears she would not be as big at threat to drive to the basket. If think that is what bball girl was referring to. The Lynx guards will have trouble staying with the LA guards and that seems to be the consensus by everyone. The lynxs guards are about 10 years older and age does make you lose some steps. Gray might not be fast in the traditional PG sense but she is faster than the lynx starters.

Whelan has no chance with Gray. Not only is Gray faster but she is also much much bigger and stronger. Putting Whalen on Sims also presents problems. While she is closer in height to Sims, Sims is much much faster. Whalen will present a catch 22 problem for the lynx's. Who will they put her on defensively?

As fast as Odyssey is on court, Riquna has shown an even faster burst where she just explodes forward as though she has been shot from a cannon. She doesn't show this burst much, but she can turn it on whenever she needs it. On top of the LA guard speed & quickness, how many WNBA bigs are as quick & fast as Nneka & Candace? I tend to think much of the outcome of this series lies with Ace. When she is constantly moving all over the floor, with her unreal versatility (the best in the entire league) and her outstanding court vision, she truly becomes a match-up nightmare. We already know that Nneka is one of the league's premier Energizer Bunnies.

Man, people who are shading Whalen's defense didn't watch the last series. Missed when she stuffed Cloud? Missed that outlet pass she hawked? These were at key points too.

Whalen's terrible defense on Gray in last years game 5 is the reason the sparks stayed in the damn game and we know how that ended.
Yes! It's all about match ups. Toliver is generally a shooter and is not a threat to drive to the basket like Gray and Sim's are. That is where their quickness and strength become there big advantage against Whalen.

Yes! In the sport of basketball the first step is more important than speed. That is why positioning is very important. Once the offensive player gets an angle on a smaller quicker defender there is not much they can do. That is also the defensive problem that smaller quicker players have at the next levels. They are so used to relying on their speed to recover that they seldom develop defensive positioning and technique. That seems to be Sims Bete Noire. She see seems to have difficulties recognizing and processing angles and positioning and that affects her effectiveness on both offense and defense. She has always relied on her speed. I do see signs of her learning to compensate.

This Sun fan commends the Sparks for staying in the locker room during the national anthem. Proud to be a fan of the ladies of the WNBA and this is yet another reason why!

I think we're seeing the "let's see if Brunson can beat us" philosophy in action.
