That should have been offsetting flops with Glory Johnson on the same play.

Well, to be fair, what we all call flops and the egregiousness that is required before the league issues a warning/fine are quite a bit different.

We (and in this case, Reeve) call any exaggerated movements designed to call the refs attention "flops". Our threshold is more in line with what hockey calls "embellishment" and sends players to the sin bin for.

The league, on the other hand, is usually looking for players acting like they got hit or were fouled when there was no contact (or very, very minimal contact) at all. So when Reeve was calling out LA, it was about the first type of flop, not the second; it was more to try to get the refs to swallow their whistles and not react to the player's response.

How in the hell is Briann January only on this once? She has to flop like 3 times a game.

Flopping Rule. Beginning with the 2013 season, players may not commit any physical act that, following review, reasonably appears to be intended to cause the game officials to call a foul on another player (a “flop”). The determination of whether a player has violated the rule prohibiting flopping will be made by the League following video review of the play. (Game officials will not make determinations about flopping during games.) Any player who is determined to have committed a flop (and the player’s team) will be immediately notified that she has violated the rule. The first time a player is determined to have committed a flop, she will be warned by the WNBA. Thereafter, the following automatic penalties will apply: violation 2--$100 fine; violation 3--$200 fine; violation 4--$300 fine; and violation 5--$400 fine. For a sixth (or any subsequent) violation of the rule, the player will be subject to such discipline as the League determines is reasonable under the circumstances, including an increased fine and/or suspension.

Identifying a “Flop”. The primary factor to be used in determining whether a player committed a flop is whether her physical reaction to an action of another player (whether or not that action resulted in contact) is inconsistent with what would reasonably be expected given the force, direction or nature of the action of the other player. For example, a player who lunges, flails or falls following minimal contact with an opposing player, or lunges, flails or falls following contact with an opposing player in a direction different from the direction of the contact (in either case, for reasons that could not reasonably be attributed to the player being off balance when the contact occurs), will be considered to have committed a “flop.”

Other factors that may be considered in determining whether a player committed a flop are any words the player may have spoken or sounds she may have made at the time of her physical act, whether the player exaggerated the severity of contact with another player, including by feigning injury, and any other facts deemed relevant under the circumstances.

Acceptable Conduct. The following conduct will not be penalized under this rule: (a) physical acts that constitute legitimate basketball plays (examples include (i) a defensive player moving to a spot in order to draw a charging foul, or (ii) an offensive player ripping arms through or otherwise creating contact in order to draw a foul on a shot attempt); and (b) minor physical reactions to contact (or no contact).

By those definitions half the players in the WNBA should be broke by now. Laughing

Yeah, that's the rule; that's not the way the rule is enforced.

For the league to issue a warning it has to be egregious. Otherwise there are a ton of players who would be in the hole financially by the end of the season.

Coaches have a right to bring something to the refs attention regarding weather their player was fouled, players were setting illegal screens, ball going off the another team player, travel etc I have no problem when coaches do that especially if refs got it wrong. On the other hand Reeve went a step further when she made those comments about LA and especially Nneka. Reeves wasn't justified in saying all LA and Nneka do is flop regardless if she did in the particular play.Even after the ref told her Nneka legitimately got hit coach Reeve didn't stop with her comments. You can complain about legit call or non calls for your team/players but no coach is justified in labelling a player and or a whole team.

I don't know what sports you watch, but lobbying the refs is part of the coach's job. Even if it means slandering other players to them. Hell, especially if it means slandering other players to them. The best coaches know how to play the game and help their team get calls. The idea that a coach only has a "right" to complain about missed calls is not anywhere in any rulebook. If the coach thinks they can influence the ref by calling out a player (truthfully or not) then they should be doing that. And if a player has a legitimate reputation, even better.

Hey, AMD once said the whole Minnesota team were floppers in the "heat of the moment" during her color commentary. Was she justified? No, but I'm not sure why anyone would care. She just makes herself look stupid.

Candace, a flopper? She provides an Oscar award winning performance, and the best that is said is that she is a flopper? That's entertainment, folks! Laughing

At least the all-time WNBA flop artist, Danielle Adams, is no longer in the league. Danielle used to crumble to terra firma like London Bridge if even the likes of Leilani Mitchell accidentally breathed on her.

She's still in the league. The suspension of Chiney left room for Adams. She's been valuable for them.

Doubt it will happen but today we could possibly see whether FLB can knock Adams to the floor.

I never said coaches can't lobby for calls for their players I said in my previous post twice that they have that right. I remember you saying that you agree with Lobo when she said that Coldman should rise above trash talking back to fans cause she a professional but it's ok for you for a coach to slander players to get calls? Come on man you can't be serious. Just for the record I don't think Nneka or her teammates are saints I remember Nneka yelling in Brunson face after getting a and 1 and thinking Nneka was in the wrong. As far as that article it may be true but so it is the opposite refs might not wanna call fouls for coaches that yell at them to make calls or always complain to them.

Oh, I remember them all well, especially Mery Andrade - the self-proclaimed Holdsclaw stopper who found out to her embarrassment that she couldn't stop Chamique Holdsclaw - not even during collegiate days. However, what made Danielle stand out is the very obvious fact that she was the most massive player in the league, sporting an official weight of 250 pounds (dwarfing even mighty Courtney Paris!), and she would fling all that thunderous weight to the poor hardcourt whenever she felt she had the remotest excuse to play dead - no matter how tiny the opposing player was. I never understood how the refs could refrain from either laughing out loud or openly displaying their utter disgust at her foolish thespian efforts. If she has curbed her play acting, it's probably only because her purse has absorbed enough fines from the WNBA to finally end all that silly nonsense.

Yes, players and coaches need to be above shouting at fans. It hurts you and your team if you allow the fans to get under your skin. And antagonizing the opposing players (without crossing certain lines) is part of the job of home crowd.

As for the article, the opposite is not true. While I am sure there are things a coach could say that would be counter-productive, statistically, complaining to refs is key to getting more favorable calls. This is backed up by empirical evidence. And slandering a specific player is not one of the things that would be counter-productive.

So, since it is the coaches job to work the refs, I have no issue with them calling out a specific player to be watched, even if it is untrue. If Agler wanted to say the same thing about Maya--and I am sure other coaches have, and that it just wasn't caught on mic--I have no issue with it, and in fact would think it smart.
