Well, no. Atlanta was a top six seed and was one of the final six playoff teams without being one of the six oldest.

Just a note: Trading for a player 28 or older, it is clear that it is unreasonable to expect her to perform at an all-star level much longer.

Granted, there are exceptions, but in general, the younger the player, the more upside. The older, the more likely a decline.

That's quite a groundbreaking piece of insight, Clay Wink

I keep saying this, and then some inevitably claim that I'm wrong, and that trading for a 30-year-old shooting guard will deliver three years of quality performance.

It worked for Detroit when they traded for Katie Smith...

And it will work again the future ... but the odds are against teams that roll the dice on older players.

Who is the youngest player ever to play a WNBA game?

Question for Clay: If 27 is the perfect age, would the same players be better at 25 or 29? (Just for that one year, not as long term investments.)

Maria Stepanova, who was 19 years, 108 days old when she debuted in 1998. Five other players have debuted at age 19:

Liz Cambage
Astou Ndour
Bernadette Ngoyisa
Kristen Veal
Ann Wauters

27 is the peak year on average, but individuals can vary greatly. Nikki Teasley was washed up by the time she turned 28. Sheryl Swoopes won the first of her three MVPs at 29.

In general, always opt for the younger player because the chance of injury is less -- but as pilight says, there's no way to know what will happen with a particular individual.

How about the youngest American player -- that is, a player who was not eligible for the WNBA as an "international player" under Article VIII(1)(d) of the CBA.

The CBA has changed several times over the years, and there wasn't one until 1999. However, the youngest American born player to play in the WNBA was Quanitra Hollingsworth, who was 20 years, 203 days old when she debuted in 2009.

Didn't know that. How was she able to play under the CBA rules?

She used up all of her collegiate eligibility. She skipped two grades and graduated high school at 15.

Hey Pilight!

Would you have information on the average age of each team for 2017?

Btw, do you compile this yourself or is that information already compiled somewhere?

I compile it myself.

Usually I wait until the season is over so I can do weighted averages.

Thanks pilight ...

As far as athletes go, the evidence in all sports is pretty clear: Don't trust anyone over 27.

That's why I don't trust anybody on the Lynx, except Natasha Howard, Alexis Jones, Temi Fagbenle, & Cecilia Zandalasini. Smile

Which is below the average age of the two best teams in the league.
