Classic Trump today.

Everything about him and his presidency is "epic" and "historic".

Even the disasters and human suffering.

And in wrapping up his remarks, he started to congratulate the group for their proficient handling of the storm, even as Houston and the surrounding region continued to be pounded by rain and floods.
Glimpsing the awkward reaction on the faces around him, the President quickly caught himself, adding, "We'll congratulate each other when it's all finished," but leaving little doubt that mutual congratulations eventually would be due.

Startlingly, he did not utter one syllable about those who have lost their lives, their homes or businesses in the floods that are still swelling over southeast Texas, overwhelming the heroic first responders and volunteers who are straining to meet its demands. He had no solace for the tens of thousands of evacuees, some of whom were separated from their families in the storm and are now warehoused in arenas, left to wonder what comes next.

President Bush made some comments about the flood while attending SMU's football practice today. I'm not much of a Bush II fan, but the contrast between what he said off the cuff and Trump's rubbish is astounding.

Can we have Bush back please? He's looking better every day.

As Politico began its article on his trip:

"It was a presidential trip to a deluged state where the president didn’t meet a single storm victim, see an inch of rain or get near a flooded street."

I have had so many of my friends in the coaching profession text and call offering prayers and thoughts for all Houstonians. They all ask what we can do to help.

Well, I came up with something I think coaches at all levels can help with....
Both men's and women's HS, JC, every level of college D1, D2, D3 and NAIA...if you can, please send 20 of your schools t-shirts and 10 pairs of shoes to:

To be fair, there is some truth this time. Proving the old adage "Even a broken clock can be right twice a day."

Right . . . if Obama had been in office the past seven months, the effects of this 800-year flood, which the National Weather Service has today said is due to a record for total rainfall from a single tropical cyclone in all of continental United States history, would have been less.

Ridiculous.

According the the NY Times as of right now, 13 deaths have been attributed to Harvey. That's miraculously hopeful. Wikipedia says that Katrina caused 1,833 deaths and that Sandy caused 233.

Obama -- who said he could "slow the rise of the oceans" in his nomination speech -- surely could have saved all the 1 to 4 million lives lost in the 1931 China floods and the 280,000 lives lost in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami.

Let's politicize everything. That's so helpful.

http://www.nj.com/politics/index.ssf/2017/08/then_and_now_the_texas_lawmakers_asking_for_aid_af.html

What was the scene in 2012 and 2013?

In early 2013, only months after Sandy devastated New Jersey and the surrounding region, Gov. Chris Christie lashed out at Republicans in the House of Representatives for putting off a vote on a $60.4 billion package to finance the region’s recovery.
"For me, it was disappointing and disgusting to watch," Christie said in a fiery news conference.
He lashed out at the GOP leadership's "callous indifference."
Christie complained that New Jersey and New York taxpayers contribute more than their fair share to the federal government and that the states’ congressional delegations have always been generous when it came to other states recovering from natural disasters.
The aid package was ultimately voted on and approved. But not everyone in the Republican Party supported the recovery.

What they said then about relief aid
Cruz and Cornyn were among 36 Republicans who voted against the January 2013 supplemental disaster aid bill.
“Hurricane Sandy inflicted devastating damage on the East Coast, and Congress appropriately responded with hurricane relief. Unfortunately, cynical politicians in Washington could not resist loading up this relief bill with billions in new spending utterly unrelated to Sandy,” Cruz said in a January 2013 statement. “Emergency relief for the families who are suffering from this natural disaster should not be used as a Christmas tree for billions in unrelated spending, including projects such as Smithsonian repairs, upgrades to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration airplanes, and more funding for Head Start.”
Cruz called it a spending package "chock-full of pork."
Cornyn took a like-minded position.
Cornyn spokesman Drew Brandewie tweeted Friday that the senator voted against the final bill at the time because it included "extraneous $ for non-relief items."
Was there pork?
A 2013 Congressional Research Report concluded virtually all of the disaster aid bill went to Sandy recovery. The outlier in the disaster bill was $150 million for fisheries in Alaska, Mississippi and New England where disaster declarations were made in 2012.
Other Republican lawmakers called for cuts in federal spending to offset the Sandy package. [e.g.Mike Pence]

Who else of note voted against it?

Thirty-six GOP senators opposed the final emergency spending bill, including former U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions. He left his post representing Alabama in the upper chamber after President Donald Trump tapped him to serve as the state's highest law enforcement official, U.S. attorney general.

What did N.J. politicians say at the time?
Christie: "Thirty-one days for Andrew victims. Seventeen days for victims of Gustav and Ike. Ten days for victims of Katrina. For the victims of Sandy in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, it’s been 66 days, and the wait continues."
Rep. Frank LoBiondo, R-2nd District: "Florida, good luck with no more hurricanes. California, congratulations, did you get rid of the Andreas Fault? Mississippi's in a drought. Do you think you're not going to have a flood again? Who are you going to come to when you have these things? We need this, we need it now. Do the right thing, as we have always done for you."
Rep. Frank Pallone, D-6th District: “How is it possible that this has become a political issue? I have never seen anything like it.”
Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-8th District: "It’s time to take the gloves off, Jersey-style."

Houston Mother Tells Off CNN: Don't Ask ‘What the F*ck Is Wrong With Us’

Quote:
But it was when Flores asked the woman about how she protected her daughter during the storm that she started to break down. “We got through four feet of water to go get them food on the first day,” she said. “Yeah, that’s a lot of shit. But y’all trying to interview people during their worst times. Like, that’s not the smartest thing to do.”
“People are really breaking down and y’all sitting here with cameras and microphones trying to ask us what the fuck is wrong with us,” Danielle continued. “And you really trying to understand with the microphone still in my face! With me shivering cold, with my kids wet! And you’re still putting a microphone in my face!”

About time someone called out the media for their bullshit disaster porn.

The entire city of Beaumont is under water evidently. They now have Navy and Air Force helicopters airlifting people out, and the Navy has dispatched two amphibious assault ships loaded with helicopters from Norfolk VA to the Gulf coast along with 200 Marines. They are supposed to arrive in two days.

Meanwhile, Christie and Cruz are engaging in a big time and very public pissing match over Cruz's vote against Sandy funding. Regardless of what you think about Christie, he did a pretty effective job in responding to Sandy and had no partisan reluctance about working with and crediting the Obama administration.

And Cruz is just an asshole with no redeeming value.

Compelling stuff on CNN right now showing live airlifts of people by the Navy. They have people queing up on islands of "dry" land surrounded by blocks of water, and are landing and loading up Blackhawk helicopters with elderly, kids, and adults, and flying them to saftey.

So a Blackhawk landed in a field near a dry school (I assume being used as a shelter) to drop off a three-generation family of eight they had just airlifted out of the flood. The crewman escorted them probably 75 feet away from the chopper, waived goodbye, and headed back. One little kid in the family must have had fun flying because all of a sudden he broke away from the family and started running back to the helicopter. Dad happened to turn and see him and made a great running shoestring tackle of the kid.

Arkema Chemicals, a French company, has a plant near Houston that is evidently a near certainty to explode in the next couple of days. The county has tried to evacuate a mile-and-a-half radius around the plant, but the company refuses to say what chemicals are in the plant. They only say they have no ability to prevent a massive explosion because of the flood they have lost power, and their generators, and their refrigeration units, and have no means to keep the volatile compounds cool. They've evacuated all of their workers. Reportedly it's only a matter of when and how big a crater it will produce.

Chemical companies love to build along the Texas Gulf coast because there's no zoning, no fire codes, no building codes, and no public reporting of hazardous materials. It's Texas.

Rachel Maddow's show focused on this last night. (Or at least the half of her show that I watched.)

She mentioned that there had been a previous explosion, and the only legal change made after that explosion was that instead of the chemicals being public knowledge, companies didn't have to disclose the chemicals. Rolling Eyes

Just saw part of the press conference with Harris County officials and a rep from the company.

Evidently one of nine refrigerated units has caught fire. The plan is to let all nine do the same and they hope they'll just burn and won't result in a big explosion.

But what do you think the odds are that the Harris County fire Marshall understands any more than you do about the chemistry or the medical effects of burning peroxide momomers?

At the press conference, fire Marshall was asked "Is the smoke from these fires toxic?" answer "It's smoke. You don't want to breathe smoke.". Sheriff's Dept rep says "It's like smoke from your Bar B Q.". When asked about those comments, Company rep says "Yes I heard those comments. We don't necessarily share that. We urge anyone who is exposed to the smoke from these fires to seek medical attention."

They say it's too dangerous to send anyone back into the plant to try to restore refrigeration, and all of their remote monitoring equipment is also non-functional, so the plan is just to sit and wait and let these things catch fire and burn themselves out. They know that these compounds, if not cooled, will degrade, the degradation process generates heat, and they will catch fire. What they don't know is whether they will just burn or will explode. So far one of the refrigerator units has just burned.

Anderson Cooper and a cameraman are broadcasting live from onboard a Coast Guard helicopter searching for and rescuing people in the flood. They just brought up a couple and their two little dogs (who were pretty freaked out about being hoisted a couple hundred feet into the air onto a really noisy helicopter filled with strangers). The people were on their roof surrounded by water waiving a white towel.

The CG rescue swimmer who went down to get the people described the experience as "fun", "surreal", and "felt good". He was psyched. He obviously thinks it's a kick to get dropped and lifted several hundred feet from a moving helicopter while swinging around in the wind on a cable.

It's pretty compelling television, actually. Might call this real reality TV, rather than the scripted "reality" TV to which we've become accustomed.

BTW, Trump's recent budget proposal called for cutting approximately $1B from the FEMA budget and shifting it to use to build The Wall.

Oops.

Maybe The Donald should tell Mexico that we'll agree to pay for our own wall if Mexico will agree to pay the tab for Harvey recovery. Razz
