Quote:
Lewis, who died Sunday at age of 91, turned himself into an American entertainment institution, first as a maniacal slapstick comedian and then as the 45-year host of tear-jerking annual TV telethons that raised a staggering $2.6 billion for muscular dystrophy research.

I guess today is the day the clown cried

I never liked the guy as a comedian.

But. Good man. Extraordinary body of work.

Jerry Lewis performed for most of his 91 years, but his peak years were the quarter century from about 1946 to 1971. So, he's probably not very well known to people who came of age after that.

Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were, and still remain, the most successful comedy duo of all time in night clubs, movies and television. Lewis was the best known physical comedian of his time and, Jim Carrey notwithstanding, probably of all time.

Lewis' films have not aged well, for the most part.

I've read that critics still like The Nutty Professor, but I don't really know or have any opinion. I've never liked or watched any comedy movies, so I wasn't interested in Lewis' movies at the time they were released. Nor have I ever watched a Woody Allen movie in full, Cheech & Chong, Monty Python, John Belushi, Jim Carrey -- most of the entire genre is unknown to me. However, I have enjoyed some of Neil Simons' plays.

I saw a lot of Lewis, both with Martin and post-Martin, on TV variety shows, including one of his own. His "Rockabye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody" is still a great rendition of Al Jolson, and is a favorite of mine.

Hmm. Never heard any of THAT. Any proof, or just an opinion?

Who's Minding the Store is my favorite JL movie. It introduced me to a musical piece I still listen to today.

A more modern rendition.
