Maybe the only last name used in both English and Chinese has affected an Asian sportscaster. With the removal of Robert Lee statues currently being a huge news item, ESPN has pulled sportscaster Robert Lee from announcing the University of Virginia game.

I'd wait to see how real this news is. Right now it is some fairly questionable sources. This has the feel of a fake story to it.

It says the game is this weekend, but Virginia's first game isn't until next weekend, September 2nd.

The Associated Press has picked it up now and it is for the game on September 2nd:

ESPN’s Robert Lee Won’t Announce Virginia Game Because of His Name

Yeah, Mike & Mike mentioned it a few minutes ago. They say the move was done at the suggestion of Lee and the game broadcast producer.

I mean, if Lee actually suggested it it is a non-story. But otherwise, come on. When someone does something so ridiculous that it actually sounds like a troll job, they need to step back, take a deep breath, and think it out.

He might have well have said "I'd rather not end up in the middle of this crap. Can you swap me with someone else doing a different game? It's not like UVA-W&M is a once in a lifetime game or anything."

If they hadn't switched him, you know millions of idiots would have assumed, just as absurdly, that ESPN had put him on that game purposely as some kind of "statement". They were in a no win situation. Move him and get crap for what sounds like a ridiculous overreaction. Leave him, and get crap for pulling a stunt.

Somebody died at UVA over this mess. It's not worth dredging that up again or creating another controversy. There's no harm in moving him to a different game. It's the smart move.

If it was a career-opportunity game for him like calling the Bama-FSU game, that would be different, but I'm sure they can find as good a game for him to call as UVA-W&M.

Pretty much a wash.

Nobody will be watching either one.

This little dust up might actually improve the viewership for both games, at least for the first quarter

It might. Both are on ACC Network Extra. In other words, they're on WatchESPN, and probably some local TV broadcast stations. Fifty more people would probably be a big boost.

If Disney wanted to look like they were treating him fairly, they'd put him on the next week's Pitt-Penn St broadcast on ABC. Maybe add him to the scheduled team.

Robert is Chinese, but Lee is also the second most common Korean surname.
The third most common Korean surname is Park, a common last name in America.
