Ticha Penicheiro retired after the 2012 season with 2,599 regular-season assists in her WNBA career, which is a record.

However, Sue Bird is closing in on that record. So, how far is Sue behind that record? Will she break it sometime this season, or next season (assuming she wants to keep playing)?

Storm website has a header that is counting it down. 26 to break.

Depends on when Bird comes back

26 ÷ 6 gm remaining = 4.33 apg

She can do that this year, and then not feel the pressure of returning next year just for the record. You can do this, Sue Bird!

Nah, she needs to start the 3000 club.

Just read that Ticha did her career assist mark in 454 career games. Sue Bird is at 472 career games so far. Ticha's last season of 2.1 app in 19 games was a definite indicator she was on her last legs.

And let's not forget that Ticha's first few seasons were played with the worst offensive team in the league.

I think Sue Bird is a better all-around point guard than Ticha, but Ticha is/was the better passer.

Wasn't her last season Slooty's first season, so she was basically mentoring Slooty? I seem to remember they used the same jersey number and Slooty gave it up to Ticha, so maybe my time line is screwed uo.

Bird got 6 assists in the last game. Now she only needs to avg 4 in the last 5 games. This record is toast.

Bird is a much better scorer than Ticha which means that there are times when she took the shot instead of the pass. IMO, that is one reason why is the better player.

In a close game, you always have the fear that Bird can put it away. I never had that some feeling with Ticha.

Bird is having her very best assist average this season at 6.5 APG. Her second best was last season at 5.8 APG.

I agree with this statement completely.
