This starts on Sunday and games are listed on ESPN3. I am working on piecing together the rosters.

Puerto Rico will not be putting a full strength team on the court, only making one change from their Centrobasket roster by bringing Ali Gibson on board in place of Adily Martucci. Given that only the top two teams in the two group qualify for the playoffs and the medalists qualify for next summer, this should leave a clear path for Cuba and Canada in this group. The other group should be pretty competitive.

Dumb question of the day: Are players who play in college in other countries eligible to be drafted in the year they turn 20 or after 4 years of college?

You're only subject to the four-year thing if you "exercise intercollegiate basketball eligibility in the United States". So being in school outside the US is irrelevant - you're eligible in the year you turn 20.

Stupid question, maybe, but why would Puerto Rico hold back their top players? Is there another international event coming up?

From what I can see, the CBA doesn't address that scenario directly. There's an implicit expectation that if they haven't indicated they're heading for the US by the time they're 19-and-a-bit, they're probably not going to. But there is a section on players who renounce collegiate eligibility and what happens if they play college basketball again afterwards - the team keeps their rights until a year after the draft that follows them exhasting their NCAA eligibility.

So I would guess the team gets to keep the player's rights in the same way, but unless I'm missing it there's technically no rule for it.

I suspect that there is behind the scenes stuff that we do not know about. Cuba has been so bad though that Puerto Rico will likely make it to the semifinal. The other group is even more chaotic, so this could get weird.

I thought it was gonna be all nice and simple, with Argentina and Brazil playing off for the top spot in the group in their last game, and then in classic Brazilian style they went and screwed it up. Is the three-way tiebreaker the classic FIBA option of points-difference in games played between the tied teams, or is it points difference in the overall group? Could make a big difference.

Brazil made it despite being as poor as ever against Argentina.

I was probably a little hard on Puerto Rico since this is actually their first time reaching the semifinals, but at full strength they would certainly be expected to be medal contenders, which they might manage even with this roster.

Venezuela and Cuba have to be considered massive disappointments though. Other than maybe Paraguay and Colombia, Venezuela probably has the closest to their full strength team. After they forced Brazil into an obscene number of turnovers in the opener, I though they would at least contend in their group. Cuba had a few roster changes, but they still should have been competitive in their group.

Puerto Rico does it! Hopefully they can have every player available next year or we will watch their lack of post depth get exposed.

Both teams tried to give away the final at various points, but Argentina probably needed to generate something better than Gretter isos to score on Canada.

Wonder if this shows up the arrogance of the Brazilians in not thinking they needed everybody to qualify, or if Erika and Dantas just didn't care enough to give up a few weeks of a paying gig to play. In previous times I'd be disappointed that the Brazilians won't be in Spain, but there's precious little on their team worth getting excited about these days. When phrases like 'Kelly Santos was the key player' come into play, you know that things probably aren't going great.

What is going on with Brazil though? Is it a bad regime of coaches or just poor player development? You have to think DeSouza and Colahdo are done with the NT. Dantas alone can't beat many teams. They just seem to be stuck in a bad phase of talent.

It feels like they do not have a good track record of bringing in WNBA players for this level of event. Clarissa Dos Santos got injured right before the tournament and she might have been their best player based on how they actually performed. Nadia Gomes Colhado probably got cut too late to realistically be added, but they probably thought that top three would be easy considering how many players other teams were missing.

There is a reason that the federation was suspended. All aspects of their program have issues and on both the men's and women's sides talent that the federation had no role in developing have carried their teams past the lack of resources. Hopefully they figure some stuff out as a result of coming out of the suspension. Having a big name club like Corinthians involved should strengthen the women's league, but they have had massive team turnover and they have way fewer national league teams than you would think a top league should have. With questionable economic conditions recently, pretty much every player with a WNBA chance was trying her luck this year and more players than ever seem to be trying the European route.
