China beat Italy even without their best player, so I guess they will be the toughest team in a weak group for us. France beat Latvia in the only other game where it might have been difficult to predict ahead of time.

China vs. USA:

US up 33 at the half even though they are shooting only 39% and have only 9 assists, because China is shooting 16% and has only 3 assists. A lot of players playing sort of equally mediocre for the US with Dangerfield, Alarie and Walker possibly being marginally the best so far.

Sort of puts WBB in perspective when there is almost no one in the stands and only 1300 viewers in the world watching the videostream.

China got 14 assists and played the US almost even in the second half, losing 91-41.

Joyner Holmes and Ruthie Hebard played well for the US in the second half, and Chennedy Carter continued to be relatively impressive as she has been since the McD and Jordan games.

Box: http://www.fiba.com/ls/#13185&13186-A-3

US is now 13-43 from the arc of prayer in two games.

Watched the entire USA vs. Mali game, which was somewhat painful until I got familiar with the players.

By eyeball, I thought the most effective players during competitive time were Shug Sutton, Chennedy Carter and Joyner Holmes, and the efficiency stats are to the same effect. Crystal Dangerfield played almost all the point guard minutes during comp time, and was the best dribbler, but she didn't really facilitate that many scores.

Megan Walker ended up with seven made shots, but five of them were in gar time at the end of the third into the fourth quarter when the US was up about 30.

I thought the 6-5 Alarie from Princeton was a spaz at first, but she looked pretty effective by the end of the game. Plus, she could compute the theory of relativity in her head during timeouts.
Box score: http://www.fiba.com/ls/#13185&13186-A-2

Walker made three of her seven shots in the first half (5 points in the first and 2 in the second) 8 in the second on 4 shots so pretty even distribution.

In other games, Canada beat France in the biggest game of the day. Japan will win their group after beating Hungary. Italy did bounce back to beat Mali. Russia took a lead early on Spain and then coasted to the finish.

In the biggest shock of the day, minnows Italy lead the United States after the first, 13-12. Chucky Dangerfield 0/6 in the first quarter for the Americans.

At the half US leads 24-21. US shot 10-38 (3-17) while Italy shot 7-22 (1-5).

Italy did a great job of denying penetration either by the dribble or the pass and also did a great job on stopping the US 's transition game. Italy's offense seemed nothing more than one on one attempts and led to what seemed like more than the 9 turnovers in the box score.

All in all a boring string of poor halfcourt offense, much like a typical SEC game.

I expect the depth of talent on the US squad to wear down the Italians in the second half.

Alarie was moto bella early in the game. Princeton has a gem.

Midway through the 3rd the US opens up a 41-30 lead. A pair of old fashion 3's by Dangerfield and dominance of the boards being the key factors. The US has a 35-22 edge on the glass and 12-1 on offensive boards. The edge is greater than it looks since the US has had 20 more fg attempts than Italy.

US opens a 52-39 lead after 3.

Vandi's Overbeck is listed at 6'1" but she is a wide body 6'1" and moves very well. Very effective in the paint.

Final score US 66 Italy 49.

After doing a fantastic job of bricklaying in the first half Dangerfield ends up as the leading scorer, along with Harris, getting all 11 of her points after the half and adding 9 assists, five rebounds and only 1 turnover.

Key stat was offensive rebounds with the US getting 20 to Italy's 4. Holmes got 7 of her 14 rebounds on the offensive end.

Ace Konig went off against Latvia, which prevents us from needing to do math to calculate tiebreakers. Australia took care of business against Hungary, but played their way into a tough bracket. Egypt actually had a lead on Spain, which could have gotten interesting.

Bracket:
United States vs Puerto Rico
France vs Hungary
Italy vs Spain
South Korea vs Japan
China vs Egypt
Canada vs Mexico
Mali vs Russia
Latvia vs Australia

USA plays at 12pm ET on Wednesday, but FIBA has not created the direct YouTube links yet. The quarterfinal could be more difficult than the semifinal.

Well, it would take some truly dedicated fans to travel thousands of miles to watch a game that's 31-10 after one quarter.

The US is free to play volleyball under the net and keep missing chippies until one finally goes in. Although without looking at the actual stats, the perimeter shooting appears better than usual so far today.

Random question...How can Puerto Rico have its own team since it's a US territory? Are other territories/states/provinces/departments able to try to qualify?

No real surprises. Strautmane basically shot Latvia out of the game against Australia. Vadeeva had a big game, but apparently Musina left the game early.

Brackets:

Quarterfinals:
United States vs France
Spain vs Japan
China vs Canada
Russia vs Australia

9th Place:
Puerto Rico vs Hungary
Italy vs South Korea
Egypt vs Mexico
Mali vs Latvia

US-France:

US up 30-22 at the half. Best US performances in the half by Tyasha Harris, Bella Alarie and Joyner Holmes.

55-40 at the 3Q, US. Same three US players playing the best, plus Hebard doing a good job on the boards.

Big game for Carter.

How was Walker ranked #1?

US wins, 78-51.

Chennedy Carter heated up in the second half and led the US in scoring with 7-10, 2-2 and 2-2 for 18 points.

Tyasha Harris led the team in assists with six, to complement the U19 single game record of 11 that she distributed against Puerto Rico in the previous game.

Megan Walker was 1-3, 0-1 and 1-4 for three points.

Brackets:

Semifinals:
United States vs Japan
Canada vs Russia

5th Place:
France vs Spain
China vs Australia

9th Place:
Hungary vs Italy
Mexico vs Latvia

13th Place:
Puerto Rico vs South Korea
Egypt vs Mali

The USA game will be ESPN3 at 3pm ET tomorrow.

The first two quarterfinals were great as Russia escaped Australia with the Maria Vadeeva show. China's lack of depth probably hurt them against Canada as Laeticia Amihere had her breakout game. The only game that was pretty much not close at any point was Japan's destruction of Spain. If nothing else, they have some confidence for tomorrow.

Shoutout to Mexico for picking up a win in the consolation bracket.
