Sheryl Swoopes, in the year 2000, is the stuff of storybooks. She won Olympic gold, the WNBA scoring title, WNBA Defensive Player of the Year Award, WNBA MVP Award, and took home the WNBA Championship. All in the same damn year.
Sheryl Swoopes was dope. Thats why she became the first woman to get her own Nike sneaker (the Air Swoopes). And thats why, when she came out in 2005, it was rightfully a big deal. Hell, Swoopes is still the most accomplished American team sport athlete to come out while in the peak of his or her career.
Soccer heroes like Abby Wambach and Megan Rapinoe, and WNBA stars like Brittney Griner and Elena Delle Donne, have since followed Swoopes to prominence as the most high-profile out athletes in the United States. |

O'Neal said he had no plans to propose, but he was especially happy to go into the Hall of Fame not only with Yao Ming and Allen Iverson, but with his Houston friend.
"I've known Sheryl a long time," O'Neal said. "She's like a sister to me. I lived in the Houston area. We were just messing around with each other.
"Sheryl, she was awesome to watch. She dominated women's basketball." |

When Sheryl Swoopes was at her best, there was no one better
Quote: |
There was nothing Sheryl Swoopes couldn't do well on the basketball court, but a familiar scene always comes to mind when reflecting on her career.
It's the image of Swoopes intercepting passes -- even good passes -- at the top of the key, then zooming down the court for uncontested layups.
Opposing players knew that Swoopes could do this. They were warned about it. They saw it on film. But they still found themselves getting burned by Swoopes this way, again and again -- and then staring hopelessly at her as she raced away from them. |

Swoopes helped change the way the women's game was played. Her speed, precision, skill level, coolness under pressure, opportunistic defense -- they set a standard for what the WNBA could be.
There was a lightning-strike element to Swoopes. She did everything quickly without looking as if she were rushed. And when it was crunch time, Swoopes wanted to be the player who made things happen. Usually, that's exactly what she did. Marsha Sharp, her former coach at Texas Tech, described it best.
"Whatever it took to lift her team to a win," Sharp said, "she was able to take her game to that level." |
Quote: |
Those qualities, ultimately, were what defined Swoopes as a player. When she was at her best, there was no one better. And even when she wasn't, she was still at a level that few others ever reach. |

Perhaps the best comparison to Swoopes in todays game is Catchings, the Fever forward who is set to wrap up what will surely be a Hall of Fame career this season. She is the only player to garner more Defensive Player of the Year awards than Swoopes and plays with a similar intensity and tenacity each and every night.
I always joke around with her, cause Im like, You know the first time I played with you with the USA team, you were really mean to me, said Catchings. But we got to know each other, and our relationship changed, and our friendship grew, and the mutual respect we have for each other is really, really high. Sheryl is definitely one of the players who has helped shape me as a person and a player. |

She was great; she was a player who was a star as far as her talent and her ability to help her team win a championship, said Minnesotas Maya Moore. She was a pro, someone who I could look up to, who had a shoe. I had her shoe. |

Just someone that when you thought of womens basketball or the WNBA, she was definitely one of the main players you thought of, said Moore. Just her story of being a mother, and being in the WNBA, she just represented so many things of just being a female basketball pro. So, I definitely enjoyed watching her and the Comets, they were one of my favorite teams growing up. Definitely followed her and cheered for her a lot. |

I hope this works out for her .. my wife saw the 30 for 30 film and was saddened to hear she couldn't handle being a head coach.
Maybe not being in charge will make it better. It's definitely easier to be an assistant ...

in her defense she never thought of herself as a HC. UIC kinda pushed that on her when she applied for the assistant position!

She's not an assistant anymore. All Sheryl would say when I asked her on Facebook was that she was replaced and it wasn't meant to be.
There's clearly more to this story because you just don't get rid of the one single person who made your whole program relevant 25+ years ago. She wasn't a head coach for goodness sakes. She was an assistant.
I don't know if Sheryl walks around with her ass on her shoulder, if she's just not committed, etc. but something in the milk's not clean.
