I think they are trying to say that they don't get paid enough in the WNBA to afford new clothes. It's sort of a protest.

My gardening jeans are really 'in'. Wow. Didn't know I was so fashionable. Maybe I should start wearing them when I go shopping... but then I might get handouts because I would look homeless...or perhaps I should sell my jeans for lots of money as 'pre-stressed'
