I thought I had already started this thread, but I guess I had just been posting on last year's U18 thread.

USA Basketball announced the tryout roster for Suzie McConnell-Serio:
https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2017/05/wu19-trials-athletes.aspx
https://www.usab.com/womens/u19/roster.aspx

Basketball Australia also named a group of players for a Gems camp coming up:

One late substitution as Bella Alarie replaces Tori McCoy:
https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2017/05/bella-alarie-added-to-wu19-trials-roster.aspx

It would be interesting to have two Ivy League players on the final roster.

Australia has named a final squad:
http://basketball.net.au/australian-gems-name-final-team-for-fiba-under-19-world-cup/

They will be the main competition for the United States and they have a pretty good team. It looks like some of the European contenders will be at less than full strength.

Canada announces their tryout list:

As expected, there are plenty of American ties on the list.

BTW, the US team settled for bronze today in the men's U19 World Cup after losing to Canada in the semi finals on Saturday.

The men hadn't lost a game since 2011 and had a 23-game winning streak in U19 World Cup play.

Kentucky's John Calipari was the head coach.

Canada beat Italy for the Gold Medal in the title game.

There will be certainly be a couple strong upset-minded teams in this tournament. Australia looks set to have a very strong team and they are overwhelming the defending World U17 champions. It had been unclear if Raisa Musina and Maria Vadeeva would join this team after senior national team duty, but they both have and immediately gave Russia a boost. Neither will be intimidated and Vadeeva in particular will want revenge for the last U19 tournament final.

Qualification for the 2019 version of this is well underway. FIBA's increasing integration of the Asia and Oceania regions means that the Oceania U17 Championship this year qualified a pair of teams for the U18 Asia Championship next year, which is great news for New Zealand. Hopefully the format changes over time (I prefer annual promotion and relegation like Europe).

Australia started the usual beatdown, this time 163-13 over Tahiti. New Zealand then beat Guam 139-34. Samoa beat the Marshall Islands 120-12 and New Caledonia beat Palau 118-29, which gives you an idea of some of the gaps in skill level. The worst games in the rest of the group stage were Australia 166 Marshall Islands 3 and New Zealand 135 Palau 8.

That led to the semifinals, where Australia beat Guam 154-12 and New Zealand beat Samoa 81-36 to be the two teams to qualify. Australia beat New Zealand 81-60 to win the title.

The team beat Italy in the second exhibition:
https://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2017/07/wu19-exh-2-ita.aspx
https://www.usab.com/~/media/a561f3564a0d46ce873c7e94c7d72d23.ashx?la=en

It's hard to tell how much we should read into exhibitions at this point as teams are missing players and hiding some things. European teams are working some players from their U20 teams into their rotation. The Gems are still the team to keep an eye on when tournament play starts to see if they have been holding anything back.

A typical USA international team: No perimeter shooting, bad ballhandling, but overwhelmingly athletic compared to the competition.

The last exhibition was not particularly encouraging, but we will see if this team can out-athlete everyone to another title:

Probably in California high schools where the great shooters are: Cynthia Cooper, Tina Thompson, Cheryl Miller, Diana Taurasi, Giuliana Mendiola, Charde Houston, Candice Wiggins, Destiny Littleton, Kelsey Plum, KML, and the 17 Samuelson sisters.

This tourney gives us more opportunity to evaluate the shooting skills of the 2017 #1, Megan Walker, who in five U16 games plus the McDonald's AA game plus the Jordan Brands AA game has shot:

FG: 26-83 = 31.3%
3FG: 1-15 = 6.7%
FT: 14-17 = 82.3%

In the U19 exhibition against Latvia, she was 0-2, 0-1, 2-2.

Megan Walker epitomizes the modern player ...

Next great shooter? Lots of choices but you can put Hannah Jump of Pinewood (near San Jose) high on the list. Six-foot deadeye in a system that emphasizes the three ...

Is this the same Hannah Jump who shows up in England 16W (#6)?

Pretty stunning start to the tournament as the Aussies lose to Japan, 66-61. Japan's scoring was extremely balanced as they used some superb passing and some lackluster Aussie defense to get on the break and used the baseline excellently to get open looks.

I wasn't sold by what I saw by the Americans against Mali. Joyner Holmes with 6 turnovers? Princeton has something special in Miss Alaire--and the Americans shot well--but this was against a porous Malian defense. Once we face a tighter defense I'm expecting things to go much tougher. Perhaps I'm overly critical, but I'm not sure that there are many positive signs here.

In another interesting development, Puerto Rico leads Spain 16-12 after one, I don't expect this to last.

Hungary dropped 111 points on Mexico and France beat Latvia. The good news for Group C (which I think is the toughest group by far) is that Latvia, France, and Canada will get a chance to redeem themselves in the knockout round.

Watched the entire USA vs. Mali game, which was somewhat painful until I got familiar with the players.

By eyeball, I thought the most effective players during competitive time were Shug Sutton, Chennedy Carter and Joyner Holmes, and the efficiency stats are to the same effect. Crystal Dangerfield played almost all the point guard minutes during comp time, and was the best dribbler, but she didn't really facilitate that many scores.

Megan Walker ended up with seven made shots, but five of them were in gar time at the end of the third into the fourth quarter when the US was up about 30.

I thought the 6-5 Alarie from Princeton was a spaz at first, but she looked pretty effective by the end of the game. Plus, she could compute the theory of relativity in her head during timeouts.
