The tournament is finally being played this week. It is three games a day through Sunday for a full round-robin with the top three teams qualifying for the upcoming AmeriCup. All games are live on FIBA's YouTube channel with the option to watch replays.

Mo and I are figuring out the publishing end, but here are the rosters to the best of my ability:

No, Puerto Rico just figured that a B- squad would be more than enough to get qualification from this group of teams and it looks like they are right so far. Cortijo will be saved for the AmeriCup later when they hope to have their other big names like Jennifer O'Neill, Ali Gibson, and Damika Martinez fresh and they will try to bring Jazmon Gwathmey on board too.

Has there been an official announcement on Brazil sorting out their problems to FIBA's satisfaction? I noticed the other day that they're now listed on the FIBA Americup site as a participant, so they seem to be in it one way or another.

Puerto Rico may have wished they brought a stronger team. The last game on Sunday could be very interesting now.

The way I read their last announcement, I thought that they were not fully clear yet, but I guess they are able to play since FIBA also published an article about their training camp. The suspension was likely the reason that every Brazilian was trying their luck at the WNBA this season.

So this tournament is just a straight-up round-robin, final places deciding the final standings? That seems incredibly unusual for FIBA. At the very least I'd have expected top-two playoff for the winner, 3-4 playoff for 3rd etc., if they couldn't be bothered with semi-finals.

The US Virgin Islands clinched their spot on Saturday. Mexico beat Jamaica, which meant that they and Puerto Rico also qualify.

This probably makes the most sense since they seem to like to keep these as five or six game tournaments. It would have been unfair to make the 3rd place team play the 4th place team again for the last spot. I would like to know the story behind only having 6 teams and why this tournament was postponed from last summer to this year though. Despite what some fans on the men's side say, I like that the new general FIBA regime is taking steps to fix issues of the past and hopefully they increase the organizational level of everything in the future.
