His criteria definitely needs tweeking. Who was coaching last night?

Currently a coach makes the poll if their team has a .500 or better record and has a record equal to or better than they did through the same number of games last year.

It's pretty obvious. Just post all 12 coaches. Why control public opinion?

Since there is room, I'd accept Shade's suggestion that all current coaches be included.

If you like the idea of trying to narrow it down a bit to exclude those that have no real prayer, my suggestion would be to add one more criterion. Your system as it currently works does a great job of focusing on one group that tends to win a lot: significant improvement. But there is one more group that tends to also get votes: the coach of the team with the best record. To addres this, you could always just add in that extra bit, that whomever is the coach of the team with the league's best record is put in first, and then your other criteria is run. This would cover both the historical bases.

On the other hand, those who don't like this poll could start their own.

Do we really want the board flooded with COY threads every week just for some minor tweak?

This poll is fine really. There is an "other" option to vote for someone who falls through the crack.

Another problem with the strictly win-differential system (as I pointed out last year)... if a team lost a lot more than they should have last year (ie, Connecticut), then the next year if they're where they should be and should have been last year, that team's coach must be COY! You can go from worst coach to best coach in one year! There's a lot more variables to winning than coaching. There's player movement, and player improvement not related to coaching, injuries, illnesses, pregnancy, funky scheduling, ref quality, and so on. That's why in this poll above all others, people should be given as many choices as possible and let them chose there own criteria. Can I get an AMEN?!

+1 Dallas 8-8 7-9

(from Pilight's "Changes" thread)

Dallas' record this year is only one better than last year.

However, of their seven top scorers from last year, Courtney Paris and Aerial Powers have not played because of injuries (Paris has appeared in 3 of 16 games; Powers has yet to play), Odyssey Sims was traded to LA, and Plenette Pierson signed (as an unrestricted free agent) with Minnesota.

The team has three rookies (Davis, Gray, Chong) playing meaningful minutes (at least 15 mpg, playing in every game to date), plus Kayla Thornton, a second-year player. There are two other rookies on the roster (Lewis, Akhator) who receive spot minutes (about 5 mpg, not playing in every game).

With so many young players, the loss of a the team's leading scorer from last year, and injuries to two key players, I would say that being .500 at this point certainly warrants Fred Williams' name being in the discussion for COY;. Is he the leading candidate? Probably not. But in the discussion? Certainly, in my opinion.

The problem with Fred is that when he wins, his team is doing it despite him, rather than because of him.

These two conjunctive criteria sound as if they would be more appropriate for a "most improved coach as of week X of the season".

My suggestion for changing the criteria, without having to include all coaches, is to use your two current criteria disjunctively ("or") rather than conjunctively ("and").
