I don't think any of us could have predicted that the top WNBA PGs this season would include Clarendon, Gray & Erica Wheeler.

Sims and Diggins-Smith are also in the conversation. Sims and Chelsea Gray are an awesome 2 headed PG combo in LA. With Chelsea's size and their radically different ways of creating for teammates, they can also play together. Hopefully they both gain some defensive acumen in Alana Beard's last season as that could propel them among the top backcourt combos in the league.

As I said last night on Twitter, based on articles and comments, there seem to be about 20 players already this season who are 'among the best point guards in the WNBA'. It depends on how big you're making your pool.

This either means this is the golden age of point guards in the WNBA or there really aren't a lot of great point guards in the WNBA. I'm going with the latter.

The way the WNBA has evolved, your starting PG needs to be able to score and be reasonably efficient. I'd say pretty much every team has that if you look at starting PGs regardless of injury. Some teams have pretty good backups too.

The WNBA talent base as a whole has really increased in the last 10 years. What makes a 12-team league fun is that every team has at least enough talent to have 3 scorers. I'd say there's probably enough talent for 14 teams without the competitive balance taking a major hit. If you were to move to 16 teams, that's where the competitive balance would probably really take a hit.

That all being said, even in a 13-team league, you couldn't really say that the balance of talent then is the same as today. San Antonio is winless but they have some scorers and will probably be better once Jefferson and Plum fully integrated. Jefferson at least. May be a lost season for Plum.

repost from earlier & updated.

Look at the starting PGs in the league. Then look at each team's back-ups. Then look at who's not playing this season.

Seattle: Bird, Quinn, A. Peterson
Los Angeles: Gray, Sims
Phoenix: D. Robinson, Mitchell, Xargay*
Minnesota: Whalen, Montgomery, Cruz*
San Antonio: Jefferson, Plum, Colson
Dallas: Diggins, Chong
Indiana: January, Wheeler
Chicago: Vandersloot+, Pondexter, Epps, Faulkner*
Atlanta: Clarendon, Keisel
Washington: Toliver, Cloud
New York: Prince+, Hartley, L. Allen, Boyd*
Connecticut: J. Thomas, Fitzgerald, Banham

*injured or not playing this season.
+temp suspension
