Gregg Allman, whose hard-jamming, bluesy sextet the Allman Brothers Band was the pioneering unit in the Southern rock explosion of the ‘70s, died Saturday due to currently unknown causes. He was 69.
As recently as April 24, reports surfaced claiming Allman was in hospice. His manager previously denied those reports to Variety, which Allman then substantiated in a Facebook post. However, he had suffered a number of ailments in recent years — including an irregular heartbeat, a respiratory infection, a hernia and a liver transplant — and cancelled many scheduled tour dates in recent months due to undisclosed health reasons.
For his work with the Allman Brothers, the legendary band he cofounded with his late brother Duane, and as a solo artist, Allman is one of the leading lights of Southern Rock. While the group’s greatest work was done before and shortly after Duane’s death in 1971, they stayed together, off and on, over 45 years and remain a singular influence on Southern rock and jam-band musicians. They were a top-drawing touring outfit until October 2014, when the group finally closed the book on their career with a series of dates at their longtime favorite venue, New York’s Beacon Theatre. |

Gregg could sing some rock and blues!! The songs "Whipping Post" and "Midnight Rider" are classics. He was never the same after his brother (Duane) passed away from his accident. May he rest in peace and reunite with his brother and Berry O. I hope he and Dickey made peace before he passed away. I hope he and his son (with Cher) made peace too.
Jai Johanny Johanson and Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers are the only two still living!

The episode of Dan Rather's "The Big Interview" on AXSTV with Greg Allman as his guest is pretty interesting. They replay these. Worth checking out.
AXSTV also shows occasionally "All My Friends: Celebrating The Songs & Voice Of Gregg Allman" which is is a tribute concert for Greg recorded at the Fox Theater in Atlanta a couple years ago.
I listen to the Allman Brothers a lot. One of my favorite bands.
Butch Trucks died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head just four months ago.
Who would have thought that Dickey Betts would outlive most of his band mates.

Didn't know. So sorry to hear that. R.I.P. to the great Gregg Allman. Incredible blues singer. Magic voice. Iconic band. Unprecedented original sound with the dual lead guitar lines. Hope this is the last bad news for these guys for a long time.

Dual drummers too.
They actually survived pretty well in recent years with Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes on guitars. Unbelievable live performers. Derek (nephew of Butch) was a child prodigy. He was playing onstage with Buddy Guy at 13. I consider him one of the, if not the, best current guitar players in the world.

I met Gregg several times. Given how hard he lived, 69 was a long time.

Outside of performance scenarios? If so, do tell!

He lived in Macon. When not on tour he used to hang out downtown all the time. I lived right around the corner from the H&H for a while.

The funeral was yesterday. Cher was in town for the ceremony.

if only i had a dollar for every hour i've spent listening to the ABB.
sadly, for me, I didn't see them until june 1973, outdoors at Dillon Stadium in Hartford:
ABB
Marshall Tucker Band
Sons of Champlain
...for the outrageous sum of $6.50.
One memory of that night- watching a very pissed off Toy Caldwell throw his brother to the stage floor after their set.
