Quote:
Yet the annual losses for the Sky, which just started their 2017 season, are smaller than they were a year ago, Alter says. "There's no question Elena's a star player and a lot of people love to watch her play, and a lot of people identify the Sky with her," he says. "But (the trade) hasn't affected our business in a negative way at all."

He has numbers to back that up: Ticket sales are up 11 percent from the same point last year and sponsorship revenue 12 percent above last season so far. Those are the top two revenue sources for the team, which declines to provide specific financial numbers but whose revenue is nearly $5 million per year, Crain's estimates.

I always like that Alter gives out these numbers every season. Losing Delle Donne is a blow and will hurt the team, but it's good to know they're close to turning a profit. Yet it's hard to believe the Sky are closer to turning a profit than possibly the Liberty who average 3K more per season than Chicago.

Alter probably charges the highest ticket prices of any WNBA team.

Wintrust Arena? God damn it, we suburbanites are going to have a jolly good time driving that deep into the city next year. No doubt it's better than Allstate (which isn't saying much) though.

Alter has had either his top 3 stars, or 3 of his top 4 stars demand trades. Don't think any other team has faced that many trade demands of top players.

It happened to Thibault in Connecticut. The whole core of the 2004-05 team that made back-to-back finals either demanded a trade or quit the WNBA altogether. McWilliams, Whalen, Sales, Douglas, and Dydek were the starters in 2005 and every one of them either "retired" prematurely or was traded away at their own request.

That's plenty - they didn't hit that for their WNBA finals game (7,365) . But it does limit those camp day announced attendances that the teams do.

It's also in the city, which will be a good thing.

A beautiful new arena with a perfect seating capacity. Let's hope it all works out and the Sky start to turn a profit.

It's good to hear Alter reaffirm he's in this for the long haul. I've been wondering about the new arena for a long time, seems like it would be a lot more $$$$ than Rosemont, however, given the location.

I think the Sky might actually draw really well at Wintrust in the City, as opposed to All State Arena. Plus, there are some transit options. For North/NW suburbs, people can get on the Red Line at Howard and take that to Cermak-Chinatown. For Western Suburbs, people can park and ride on the Green Line in Oak Park. It would be interested if the Sky ran a study of where there fans live and maybe they could offer shuttles buses from certain suburban pockets.

With that being said, I think this will be an incredible upgrade, though. I've heard this arena will be phenomenal and 10,000 is a really good capacity for the WNBA. Now, full disclosure, I'm incredibly biased because I live on the near South side and this will be so easy for me to get to, lol.
