Trump claims the investigation into his and his campaign's alleged "collusion" with Russia is a waste of time and money -- and so far the complete lack of evidence would seem to bear his opinion out.
He seems genuinely to be interested in the more general question of whether Russia or other foreign governments are tampering with U.S. elections, which of course they are and have been since WWII. Trump is most likely to be interested in illegal voting and vote tampering, which is Kobach's field of expertise.
Kobach has stunning academic credentials: Harvard summa cum laude and first in his department (Government); M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Political Science from Oxford as a Marshall scholar; and a J.D. from Yale, where he was an editor of the law review. He's been a law professor, DOJ lawyer, private practitioner, and state official, specializing in immigration and constitutional law. He frequently litigates against the ACLU, and is for that and other reasons a despised figure among open borders and soft-on-illegal-immigration left-wingers.
One of the primary goals of the commission Kobach will lead is to create the first national database, from the 50 unconnected state databases, of documented illegal voter registrations, voter fraud and other forms of election tampering. The purpose is to obtain actual empirical data to support or debunk the contradictory anecdotal assertions of "voter suppression" and "voter fraud" that circulate in our polarized political climate. And then to make recommendations as to what to do about the facts, once the actual facts are known.
Good idea. |

Seriously, a big part of the problem is that Trump seems to be so defensive about the Russian connections. It does make one think he has something to hide, that he is trying to protect the Russians, or that his vanity does not allow him to accept that some part (whether small or large) of his victory could be tied to Russian meddling. He should just say - have at it. Dig up what you can dig up.

Kobach leading a group investigation voter suppression is the ultimate joke. this guy is just another one of 45's selections who want to destroy the department they're head of. its the equivalent of having the fox guard the hen house. smh
