It may be that Penny Taylor has as a lot of value as a coach/adviser ... but again, just because a player is popular and skilled does not mean she automatically will be a good coach. |
True but when a player was already a coach and leader on the floor then the transistion to coach will be easier to make |
One would think that would be the case, but the Phoenix Mercury have first hand history that a leader on the floor does not necessarily turn into a great - or even a good - head coach.

True but there are a lot of differences between players like PFT, Hammon and then Cooper

I think there's too much cognitive dissonance about the Merc. It's kinda like the LeBron Cavs being under .500 for a couple of months. How? WHY?? It's not possible?!
Remains to be seen ... but losing 3 Olympians and 2 more All-Stars, and yet I bet it's even money, they do better this year. If they got 2 borderline starter / 3rd in a rotation SGs around 5'9" ... look out. They'd be returning to basketball reality. Make 1 wear a jersey with the name KellyM1 on it, and the other wear KellyM2. We don't know who you are, but the team is doing better. OK. Or bring Briana Butler back (as a for-instance).

I read in an article on the Summitt that Bass is planning on returning after the All Star Break. How would this shake things up? Would the Mercury want her back?

A Prince posted rather tasty numbers, against some Storm experienced players.

Gives new meaning to the Mercury being a "run and gun" team.

Five-on-Five with Shay Murphy
Quote: |
I didn’t really have a rush to get back. I wanted to really take some time to recover and actually enjoy L.A., enjoy the time off because playing year round for WNBA, overseas, seven years in a row was a lot. It was kind of like a bitter sweet, blessing in disguise. I was able to get more involved at my church, spend time with family and just work on little things that I don’t have time to work on during the offseason.
...
I actually feel better than I have felt in my whole life and just more confident, more secure, and do things, make the right reads. Play more control in the half court. |

Spencer, Alleyne, and Harden (injury) were cut. Turner should make team. Leaves McCray, Brunner, and Plouffe competing for one spot. Heart says Brunner, gut suspects McCray.
Edit to add:
The gut feeling is not due to thinking McCray played better...just guessing Jim may go with experience. Hoping and thinking it should be Sophie.

Really unfortunate injury for Harden. Cling on to the end of the roster for a couple of years, then when the stars in front of you finally start to get out of the way you get hurt. I'm not convinced she's actually much good, but she was going to have a chance to show one way or the other.
This team still looks desperately thin. It's funny, Taurasi and Griner have come home from playing for a Euro powerhouse, and are now on a team that looks a lot like the mid-level Euro teams instead - enough money to pay the top two or three import stars, before filling out the roster with whatever the hell else they can find on the cheap. |

Phoenix Mercury @PhoenixMercury
Mercury waive Miah Spencer, Jillian Alleyne, Danielle McCray, Katherine Plouffe & Alex Harden. Harden will have shoulder surgery this week.

So barring trades or extra pickups, they're our first team finished. |

pretty cool that Bruner made the team. I didn't expect that.

It kinda has the "forgive us for tanking but at least we gave you an ASU player to cheer for" kinda feel to it.
Disappointed with the Spencer cut. There have been worse-performing rookies keeping their jobs.

Nobody gave us anything, Sophie Brunner is a solid player! I was not surprised she made the cut with the Mercury, I was more surprised she didn't get drafted!, she had a great career at ASU, glad she got a shot and she made the most of it!

As a P12 opponent, we always called her 'Big Shot Bruner'. I didn't think she was extra-ordinarily skilled, but had the heart of a Lion and would somehow figure out how to win close games.

I was always impressed with her grittiness and how she managed to come up with rebounds and tough baskets against players who were bigger, faster, and stronger than she was. I doubt she'll be able to keep that up in the W for very long, but it's a nice story.

Sophie Brunner ‘in shock’ after making WNBA roster
Boy, she's not the only one. No booyahs up in herre, other than for Prince.

Brunner was not one of the final five cuts, but she hasn’t officially made the roster yet, either. Vince Kozar, basketball communications officer for the Mercury, said rosters aren’t finalized until Thursday or Friday. The Mercury could pick up a player cut from another team’s roster, as often happens in football after final NFL cuts, and trim a player from their current roster from now until Friday. |
Now this makes more sense.
Quote: |
“I am pretty much 12th on the 12-woman roster, but hey, I am not complaining,” Brunner said in a phone interview this morning. “It’s still cool. They give you an apartment to live in. That’s exciting." |

I was watching a Stanford/ASU game when Bruner was a freshman. She had just scored and the announcers were saying good things about her as she got back on defense around the free throw line. Then Chiney Ogwumike comes into the picture and runs into Bruner like she wasn't there. No idea if that was because Bruner had just scored on her or if there was contact on the other end that she didn't like. For some reason, the announcers ignored it and no foul was called.
Bruner appeared to be an undersized 4 in college. I don't see her playing that position in the pros and don't know that she is quick enough to play the 3. But the one highlight I saw of her with a little drive and pull up jumper in the preseason game she looked quicker than I felt she was in college. But in college, I don't recall her getting the ball 15 feet away from the basket and trying to drive as she did in the exhibition game.
