If the scoreboard doesn't lie, what about the regular season scoreboard? Or does only the tournament scoreboard count?

I guess that means the AAC was the best conference for a few years running...interesting.

Actually, I took that line from you, Clay. The context you used it in was in justifying ranking one high school team over another.
In any event, this is just a topic and anyone is free to disagree or debate the proposed conclusions.
I wouldn't claim a conference the best just because one of its members made the Final Four or won the NC. More particularly, the AAC is has never been the top, or even a top, conference. This season, however, I think the SEC has proved its case by getting two members into the NC game and knocking off all the other conference contenders -- the primary rival this season probably being the PAC 12.
Personally, I don't see much argument against A'ja Wilson being the best front court player when tournament play is counted, though I suppose Brionna Jones, Brianna Turner, Napheesa Collier and Gabby Williams fans could make claims.
Best coach is debatable. Several did very good jobs this season. But I'm willing to give it to Staley on the grounds that she won the NC, beat her NC rival, Vic Shaefer, three times fairly convincingly, and did so after making a huge mid-season lineup and tactical correction after losing her best rebounder and second best scorer (Coates).
Best team may be the most controversial claim. The scoreboard at the NC game is one way to decide the issue, and it will be how history eventually records the event. I will acknowledge, however, that there is probably a large cadre of fans -- probably including me -- that believes UConn was the best team this season, notwithstanding one very close defeat. |

This is the second year in a row a team has won the title without having beaten a #1 seed. Is that unusual? How often has that happened?
