2018 first round mock (Too Early) This is mostly just for fun based on a discussion in Liberty thread about why you don't trade your first round pick, or a psychic vision (And yeah I only have Deshields declaring early in 17)
1. SA A. Wilson
2. Atl B. Turner
3. Indy K. Mitchell
4. Conn G. Williams
5. PX A. Gray
6. Dallas M. Russell
7. Chicago V. Vivians
8. Washington L. Brown
9. Seattle J. Canada
10. NY S. Mavunga
11. Minn J. Nared
12. LA M. Billings
And that leaves Davis, Nurse, Hines-Allen, M. Moore, Greenwell, Scaife, McCarty, Harper all in the 2nd round

So why is the 2018 draft going to be that much deeper than the 2017 draft? It seems fairly normal to me, with three or four pretty much sure-fire players (though no superstars except Mitchell) and then a dropoff to a list of players who could become pretty good -- and of course some of them will.
But, just to take one, Jordin Canada is not a good shooter, and given her height and build, if she's going in the number nine range, how is that draft pick worth much more than this year's, say.
Canada's a good player, no question, but I don't see her as a guaranteed WNBA starter at the point.

I can see her starting at point for a team at the next level . She has the type of skillset that fits most W talent level players . I sometimes catch myself thinking if she were on a team with more talented players she would get more pub . Put 4 great athletes with her and she can make her presence felt. I do agree the shooting does need to improve for her

10 Best 2017 WNBA Draft Prospects in the NCAA Tournament
http://www.herosports.com/ncaa-tournament/best-2017-wnba-draft-prospects-blbl
Quote: |
The ten players on this list are among the most intriguing players in the women's tournament. |
Quote: |
Lindsay Allen, G - Notre Dame
If a team needs a player to calm things down, be smart with the ball and provide strong defense at the top, well Allen may be a smart pick. |
Quote: |
Alaina Coates, F/C - South Carolina
There is no doubt Coates is one of the pre-eminent posts in the country, and for a top national contender no less. |
Quote: |
Nia Coffey, F - Northwestern
This do-everything player for the Wildcats has had a career to envy. Nia Coffey can do it inside and out, plays with immense physicality and her toughness is unquestionable. |
Quote: |
Diamond DeShields, F/G - Tennessee
This one is a little tricky.
Currently a redshirt-junior, DeShields could declare for the draft once the Volunteers end their postseason turn.
Will she? We'll see. |
Quote: |
Caitlin Ingle, G - Drake
Savvy? Yes.
Smart with the the basketball? Absolutely.
Now after her dynamic performance in the Missouri Valley Conference final against Northern Iowa -- an MVP performance, mind you -- there's no denying Caitlin Ingle is clutch. |
Quote: |
Tori Jankoska, guard/forward, Michigan State
"I think she’s a top-10 draft pick, but a lot of that in the WNBA side depends on how many of the underclassmen decided to declare and come out," said Michigan State coach Suzy Merchant. "She’s had to play in the shadows of Aerial (Powers) for three years. I don’t think many people knew how good she was. I’ve had so many media and scouts say ‘we had no idea’, it’s because she put the team first. Those two were a dynamic duo and she was sort of the compliment to Aerial and now she’s in that role and you can see what she can really do. |
"We had no idea", just like with Copper.
Quote: |
Brionna Jones, F - Maryland
Jones has been as steady a force as any player in college basketball. Her last two seasons, especially have been most impressive and that has helped make the Terrapins a national title threat. |
Quote: |
Chantel Osahor, post, Washington
The most dominant interior force in all of D1 women's basketball. Period. |
Quote: |
Alexis Peterson, guard, Syracuse
Smooth. Just too smooth.
Peterson played a huge role in the Orange's landmark 2015-16 run to the D1 title game and she has continued her dominant play in her swan song. |
Quote: |
Kelsey Plum, G - Washington
Plum became the all-time scoring leader in the history of D1 basketball and for good reason. |

Good luck watching Nia Coffey. Northwestern didn't make the NCAA tournament and they declined their NIT invitation.

Nurse is easily a first round pick. Easily.

I think Kia Nurse is a very good player, but what position will she play in the W? I don't see her as quick enough to defend the three, nor quite big and strong enough to play the four.

I tend to avoid UConn games, but I thought she played guard, including some point guard. Has she only been a 3 for them?

She is a SG and plays point sometimes. KLS is the 3 for the UConn.

Isn't Nurse PG for the Canadian NT?

She plays the 2. Miah-Marie Langlois plays point for the North. And quite well. Come to think of it I'm surprised she's never gotten a shot in the W. She's probably better than half of the backup point guards in this league.

yes sometimes, but she will have trouble defensively at PG in the W...not enough foot speed. Still she will probably make a decent combo guard.

I'm not impressed with Russell,Vivians,Gray or Nurse.I'd select Nared before any of the aforementioned players.

John Adams: This could be last tournament for DeShields, Russell
http://www.knoxnews.com/story/sports/columnists/university-of-tennessee/john-adams/2017/03/17/john-adams-could-last-tournament-deshields-russell/99305254/
Quote: |
Both are fourth-year juniors who likely will be high WNBA first-round picks if they should choose to forgo their senior season. In one mock draft, DeShields is projected as the first overall pick and Russell No. 7.
As they prepare for Saturday’s first-round tournament game against Dayton, they aren’t professing to think beyond March Madness.
"It's not something I'm worrying about," Russell said Friday. "I will think about it later." |
Quote: |
DeShields also is immersed with the business at hand but admits, "It's definitely something that's looming over both our heads." |
Quote: |
DeShields is probably the least likely of the two to come back. As highly as she already is rated, she hardly could improve her draft status. Moreover, her game might be better suited for the pros than college. |
Quote: |
But the 6-foot-6 Russell surely could better prepare herself for the WNBA and overseas by using all her college eligibility. Her strength and aggressiveness improved from last season to this one, but there’s room for more improvement in both areas. Foot problems slowed her development, necessitated surgeries and forced her to redshirt one season at Tennessee. Since she has been injury-free this season, she might want to sign a contract while she’s in the best of health. |
