Had the OP used the word "will" instead of "should", this thread would have a clear answer: Dawn Staley.
The word "should", on the other hand, allows us unwashed masses to import of all our subjective preferences, fangirl fantasies, idols of worship, and non-empirical delusions into the choice of Olympic coach.
The primary delusion, of course, is that WNBA coaches are anything other than recycled rejects, who would not succeed at coaching WCBB, MCBB or men's pro basketball. This is obvious from the individualistic streetball that masquerades as team offense and team defense in the WNBA. Those who think otherwise may be in need of a cult deprogrammer.
Van Chancellor -- give me a break! . . . or a vodka gimlet! Cheryl Reeve would be a mere RebKell poster without Maya Moore. Et cetera. (That pontificated, Bill Laimbeer has shown flashes of team ball when he's had good players and Stephanie White looks interesting.)
Most any elite WCBB coach would be better than any WNBA coach, which used to be mandatory during the WNBA era before they changed the Olympic coach job requirements just to get Auriemma after Donovan. That's just the view among rational WNBA haters.
Ahh . . . I'll contradict that, too. The Olympic coach has so little time to actually practice with and shape the team into any semblance of a Swiss watch -- and the USA players are so relatively good anyway -- it just doesn't matter much who sits on the bench and swears at the refs.
Please ignore this outburst and return to your subjective fantasies. Too bad I haven't had a vodka gimlet since the Nixon administration. |

IMO Geno is going to be the coach until he retires which could be at least 20-25 years from now.

Until Geno's tenure, there were no repeat HC's, and each new HC was frequently an AC during the previous Olympics. I don't know if those things were rules, or if each HC felt obligated to step down for reasons of fairness or career/family commitments or whatever. Dawn was an AC for Anne Donovan and now Geno. I'd say she's as well, if not better, qualified to coach at the Olympic level as some of the WNBA names being offered up.

Ditto. A proven champion and a AC for Geno now. Dawn has not shown she can win a championship nor has she won a championship.

Dean Smith coached an Olympic team to a gold medal and he hadn't won a championship at that time.

As a head coach with USA Basketball Dawn Staley won gold medals at the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Tournament and 2007 Pan American Games.

Yes she did, thank you for that correction. I was more focused on her primary coaching career in WCBB which is not an excuse just juxtaposing her career to Cheryl's recent success in the WNBA who is also on the Olympic coaching staff.

my first thought was Dawn Staley. It's a pretty natural progression.

Just remember the committee chose A'ja Wilson, not Dawn Staley.

She'll start with 2018 World Championships
That might leave little Jefferson out in the cold in favor of the overlooked guards.
Wilson is in.... Parker out again?

Diggins/Jefferson (I think Dawn will like her small PG game anyway)
Loyd/McBride/T. Mitchell (note the T.)
Moore/Stewart
EDD/N. Ogwumike/Charles
Griner/Wilson

T. Mitchell won't be good enough for the USA team. Dawn probably won't have unlimited control over the team like Geno.

I know one thing for sure: Dawn Staley loves Napheesa Collier. Collier played the second most minutes on Staley's U18 team behind A'ja Wilson, and the most minutes on her U19 team ahead of A'ja Wilson.

Dawn Staley being named coach was the easiest prediction since guessing that Adele's album would be pretty popular. It was clear this is what USA Basketball was going to do.
I would have liked to see Cheryl Reeve instead, but what can you do? Hopefully, Staley will prove a better choice than you would expect from a coach who has made one Final Four in 16 seasons. We'll see.

The scary thing about that comparison is that Adele's new album isn't very good, and certainly inferior to her first two.
And Geno's politics, etc., if the baggage truly existed, didn't interfere with putting together gold medal success. Hopefully Dawn will keep the train rolling ...

Some posters here have been "culturalized" into the Luigi Way of doing business. Dawn Staley just isn't like that. She will pick the top players available to make her teams....she won't hand out freebies to former college players of hers, unless those players will be among the top players of whatever respective years the teams are in.
Staley herself was a former Team USA PLAYER - something Luigi can't possibly relate too - and knows a little bit about the importance to those players to make the teams. She won't walk all over players who earn and deserve opportunities: She respects Team USA too much to have that kind of pitiful arrogance....
