That mock also has Russell declaring.
If Russell did declare where would she rank against the other posts? In this mock she is 4th behind Coates, B, Jones and Osahor, but while I'm not saying I disagree I do think she has the highest ceiling of the four and I could see a GM taking the risk, since none of the other 3 seem like a sure thing at the next level.

I can't take that mock serious with Mitchell falling to #7 and Peterson at #4

We did something like this a couple years ago and I thought it was a fun game, so...rank the following senior guards according to how good you think they will be in the WNBA.
Kelsey Plum
Alexis Peterson
Alexis Jones
Makayla Epps
Lindsay Allen
Sydney Wiese
Leticia Romero
Tori Jankoska
Jessica January |
Bump. |
on Stats alone for point guards, I'd go:
Mitchell
Plum
APeterson
Jankoska
LAllen ... not sure how to rate non 3 point shooters, but if a team allows a Vandersloot development curve
?January
Combo guards, not #1 on their team in assists
AJones
Sykes
Romero ... that's a very tasty 3 stroke olympic battletested
Epps
Wings :
SWK
Coffey
(3 uconn prospects)
Wiese if she can play W defense
DeShields
... BUT the e.z. stats alone, are barely touching 1/3rd of what a player can do.

Hahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
The people behind these mock drafts that have Kelsey at 6, 7, etc. are either not watching the games, trying to get too cute, or have no idea what WNBA GMs actually look for in prospects. If Mitchell declares, there's no way she isn't a lottery pick at worst . Done. Fin.

Tiff Mitchell has tendencies that can be scouted so she eventually struggled as teams watched her play. Banham bigger than Plum and better passer but like Plum played no defense and not athletic enough. Both players had the ball in their hands 95% of their careers, not a good sign if you are moving on to play at a higher level. K Michell much better athlete than both, sure has problems re ball dominant etc but could become a better defender. None really great choices. DD c'mon now she could never be a facilitator too many turnovers and she is also ball dominant and not a team player. |
To summarize this, you believe none of these players have the opportunity to expand and mature on skills that they have or don't have?_________________

IMO none are going to change programs. Every player can work to improve, if they want to. If I were a GM, I would be looking to put in some pieces that will compliment what I have, play a role that will improve my team. Some of these have big issues as they have been hyped and center of attention, ball dominant, never played defense etc. Those types I would avoid like the plague.

Looking at the stat list above I'm not so sure why NY fans would be getting excited about S. Copper, what am I missing besides her SF size? Why would she be better than say N. Davis for NY?
I will try to catch more of A. Prince in the tourny as her stats seem much better for what NY might be looking for in a SF. I love Bonner if Prince is Bonner-ish I'm all for it.
If McCall lasts until 14 would anyone consider bringing her in to compete with Burdick and Raincock-Ekunwe for a 5th post spot?
We're over flowing at shooting/combo guard but I still like Epps. Is Epps or Sykes any better than say Alston or Barbee? And could any of them break through the log jam at that position?
How does Romero, Jankoska and Allen compare to B Boyd and Hartley, any chance one of them could be a better option at back up PG for NY?

Cooper has size, length, can shoot and is a great athlete. I think she also has some of that 'attitude' that Bill likes, though some fans (Queenie?) wouldn't be thrilled to see her in a Lib uni. She's more of a 3/4 with a definite outside shot. Prince would be a straight up 3. Both have been playing well late in the season. She (Prince)seems to be a good three shooter but not so good from the line, which always concerns me. Nina is size challenged and shot challenged. Her shot is just plain ugly from beyond 4 feet. I mean seriously ugly form. Sometimes it goes in in spite of the form, but mostly she shoots close to the rim and at 5'10" she won't get many of those shots in the W. I just don't see it, though Shades will disagree. JMO.

Every time I've forced myself to watch that team from Ohio, Shayla Cooper does something that makes me question her maturity and future professionalism. Do not want.

I guess I'm somewhere in-between Myrtle and Queenie when it comes to Cooper. I think she fits as a 3/4 versatile backup, giving you a bigger, stronger alternative to Bec Allen at 3 while providing you with a quicker 4 option over Zahui B, Vaughn or even Stokes. She has good athletic ability and is a serviceable 3pt threat, albeit at light volume. On the other hand, I've seen a lot of games where Cooper was invisible or looked mistake prone. For me, it's more of an analytical pick based on athletic ability and fit. I'm not actually a fan of hers. This is similar to my Bulgak recommendation last year.
At #14 in a weak draft, I think you take the best player available who isn't exclusively a SG. I'm with Myrtle when it comes to Nina Davis. Too small for PF -- even smallish for SF -- and not enough perimeter skills to function at 3. Right now, I think Prince is a 1st Round pick. That's how thin the 2/3 pool looks to me. McCall would be fine. She's streaky as hell, but hopefully she can be coached into greater consistency. I go back and forth with Epps. She's not a real PG in terms of vision and passing ability, but her handle looks good enough to be a "lead guard". Epps just seems like a Liberty player in terms of competitiveness. Sykes is a great athlete, but she can only play 2-guard. I also wonder about her in a regular offense without all those TOs created by Syracuse's ball pressure. On a side note, I have the same concerns about Peterson. The other guards you mention are all smallish, and since we're already worried about NY's backcourt being too small defensively, I don't think management will go in that direction... unless there's an instant trade available.
