Just out of curiosity, can anybody educate me to why Turkey recruits so many American players?

Americans are best, and there doesn't seem to be much of a limit on them.

So the question can also be: Why do so many American players want to play there? Because most teams pay very well is probably the best answer. Their foreigner limit is pretty standard/middle of the pack. Israel is one of the most lenient as far as that is concerned. China is one of the strictest.

Yes, DRob is playing. Not the best quality, but here's the Mersin game on January 4th:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vgLL7knrL4

It looks like McBride signed on January 6th, but she did not play in the January 7th game. She probably needs practice time with the team before she plays.

DRob took over for Tiffany Hayes and seems to be playing that same role of a slashing 2. She is being totally misused by the coach. In the one game I saw, their PG was not anything near what I've seen DRob do.

I haven't watched the team much (although I have watched a few). But there are foreigner limits and in Euroleague, non-European player limits. It may be the case where one of their best domestic players happens to be a PG, and really can't play SG effectively. So even though DRob may obviously be the better PG, to get the best team out on the floor the coach may have to slide Danielle over to SG since she can score.

Ah, Shades wanting to watch Zahui B. There are actually a bunch of other games being streamed live this afternoon -- including a couple right now. There may be an easier way though the FIBA site, but I just go to Youtube and search on FIBA Women. Unfortunately, the "Today" filter doesn't work, so the best you can do is use "This week" and then scroll down until you see a string of games for January 18th. Either that or filter on "Live" to see what is playing at the moment. If you can't watch it live, the games are usually left up as archives for awhile. Usually, but not always.

You should be able to go straight through the FIBA YouTube channel itself. I believe the channel name is FIBAWorld. You can access replays directly there too and see times for upcoming games before they go live.

Yeah, Turkey doesn't have more Americans than other leagues, it's just that the level of pay across the board means that they can sign more recognizable names. Even the worst teams in the league can have a Cappie Pondexter-level player. In fact, Turkey is a little stricter than most leagues, allowing 4 non-Turks (2 non-European) and 1 naturalized Turk. Again, the money allows them to afford the best naturalized Europeans so people like Zellous, Quigley, and Vandersloot can play alongside multiple American players and of course naturalized players like Sanders, Hollingsworth, Turner, and Newlin are also American. Some of the teams in continental competitions also have a couple backup European players.

China is the strictest of course except for leagues that do allow foreigners and South Korea is strict with only one allowed on the court at a time. Many leagues in Europe adhere to the two non-European rule so that their domestic league rosters are still legal in continental competition. Germany and Romania are two that have much looser limits and as a result are flooded with American players. Most Polish teams also do not fit the European rule and now some Hungarian teams are joining them. Several leagues also have unusual exceptions, like Spain and Italy, who do not limit players from Cotonou Agreement countries (mostly Africa, Caribbean, and Oceania). That's why Spain tends to have teams with full rosters that would not be legal in European play as teams often have an African player or two and sometimes also a player from South America who can claim a European passport. Americans who are entitled to African passports have increasingly taken advantage of this rule. I believe France also lowers limits on people from it's former colonies.

Israel is actually quite strict in that teams can only have 3 non-Israelis, but there are a number of Americans there because anybody who is entitled to Israeli citizenship via Jewish roots does not count against the limit. That's how Maccabi Ramat Hen can field Diamant and Baron with their foreign trio and have the strongest five player unit in the league all born in America. Other names in that category include Presley, Cohen, Zimmerman, and Reichman, and of course Alysha Clark when she played there. This applies to players born in other countries too like Levitsky (Ukraine) and Gilinski (Poland) too. Some of the domestic players are more familiar to us than other leagues because they went to school here like Doron, Shafir, Oren, Suez, Pelleg, Dayan, and Kedem.

USK Prague did win the EuroLeague title with Robinson in a dual point guard setup alongside Palau, so it's not crazy for a coach to think it would work with the even older and slower Kartaltepe. At Prague, they tended to use Robinson to try to get out in transition and attack early, while letting Palau initiate halfcourt sets.

Having one player bring the ball up (the American) and another player run the offense (the European) is fairly common in Europe, although more so on the men's side. There is an old adage among men's EuroLeague fans that no team starting an American at point guard has ever won the modern EuroLeague. I feel like coaches here are become more flexible with how they view positions, but us fans still like to pigeonhole players. We seem to have accepted the scoring combo guard off the bench and the stretch four, but maybe we are not quite ready for the stretch five or the dual combo guards yet.

Some leagues have odd rules too. Hungaria allows 4 non-Hungarian players on a team. But they have a rule where one player from their U20 team HAS to play at least a half (I didn't know this until Sammy started playing there). On the team Sam is on their U20 player is a PG. So if you see her not starting (as was her first game) don't everyone jump to the conclusion that they prefer the other pg. lol

I am not sure if there is a better place to put this, but it has now been formally announced that the Opals and Tall Ferns will join the six top FIBA Asia teams in a unified tournament from July 23rd to 29th. The tournament will be in India and it will be interesting to see if any players try to avoid it and what consequences there might be. The press release is not clear on how qualification for world events will work. Early indications on the men's side are that Oceania will still be entitled to its own Olympic berth and not compete for the one from Asia.
