We have a new leader for most watched game. Comparing to last year, it is crazy how the demographics of the CBS game changed based on lead-in. If I am missing a game, please let me know as we get more games during the weekends. Not all channels are rated.

12/31 Ohio State vs Indiana CBS 765,000
1/1 Alabama vs South Carolina ESPN2 51,000
1/1 Kentucky vs Tennessee ESPN2 127,000
1/1 Temple vs Memphis ESPN2 106,000
1/1 Tulsa vs Houston ESPNU 25,000
1/2 Seton Hall vs Butler FS1 28,000
1/2 Louisville vs Duke ESPNU 74,000
1/2 Creighton vs Marquette FS1 21,000

I suppose if the people who can already get the channels are not watching the game, getting more people the channels will not help too much.

The lowest subscribed channel I have listed so far is FS2, which is in around 50 million homes. Doubling that, which would be more than any cable channel basically, would not make viewership explode or anything. That said, it's important to be able to compare viewership within the channel to get an indication how important the games are for the future.

Fox Sports had yanked their channels from Comcast before that game. (Baylor-WVU) Just as a f'rinstance.

Interestingly enough, poor availability of FS2 is one of the complaints that sports fans have about Comcast. We will see if that changes in the future. I have not seen any recent figures with all of the mergers today, but I believe Comcast is the provider for about 15% of the nation's television households.

That's the equivalent of 2 people in the whole Nielsen pool watching the whole game and 1 person stumbling upon it for 15 minutes.

If people want to complain about a channel not getting wide enough distribution:
1/12 UTEP vs FIU BeIN 3,000 *First run tape delay

In retrospect, I should have tuned in for the end of the replay instead of watching the St. Mary's men smother Portland.

The game went to triple overtime. Then the FIU men visited the UTEP men and that game went to double overtime.

That one maybe you can blame on the obscure network and tape delay, but what do you say about

"1/8 Tulane vs Temple ESPNU 7,000"

And if 21,000 is "the equivalent of 2 people in the whole Nielsen pool watching the whole game and 1 person stumbling upon it for 15 minutes" what's 7,000 represent?

A power surge on the Nielson box of one person who was actually watching "The Vikings" perhaps?

To be fair, other than an attempt to clean the reputation of Qatar, nobody knows what the channel is. They will have a handful of Conference USA events. Their football games did not do much better than a tape-delayed women's basketball game, so I have no idea what they paid the conference for these games. Besides soccer, they are the rights holder for a number of WTA events now.

They have a good half hour weekly magazine format series on motorcycles called On Two Wheels that I try to catch.

They also hold the US rights to several major motorcycle road racing series.

1/17 Oklahoma vs Texas FS1 76,000

For reference, an SEC gymnastics dual meet in the middle of that day on ESPNU averaged 67,000 viewers.

Sportstvratings.com numbers are just cable viewership. Adding in people with sat dishes or people streaming the games would be a lot more. People are cutting the cord more frequently now. I'd like to see data from WatchESPN viewers as well as the conference and school games available by streaming.

They include satellite.

They don't include streaming, but when streaming numbers are released they are always, in my experience, insignificant compared to the TV numbers. ESPN does announce them on occassion. And for last spring's NCAA men's basketball tournament, the NCAA published the numbers. There were 22 million TV viewers for the championship game alone. In contrast, the streaming video for the entire tournament, every game, totalled 3.4 million live video streams and 1.1 million live hours of video consumption. They said that the total for TV and online combined was over 41 million hours of viewing for the full tournament, of which only the 1.1 million was online.

That's a 40:1 ratio, and the CBS March Madness Online is one of the most long-standing and best established streaming sports media products. It's free for everyone, high quality, and has for years been the means for people to watch the tournament while at work, so if anything one would expect it to outperform most other streaming sources.

What a pack of amateurs. Spicer just held a press conference to castigate the media for mischaracterizing photos to claim inaccurate crowd size numbers.

They say this was the a largest audience EVER for an inauguration.

He cited Metro numbers that are entirely different than what has been reported all day on the local news radio channel.

What a crock of propoganda.

Maybe that's what WBB commentators should do. Just claim millions of people are watching even when they aren't.

Very Happy

The UTEP vs FIU WBB game on BeIN had the largest audience for any televised sporting event in the history of television and I am outraged by the media that has intentionally falsified data to claim only 3,000 people watched. We're going to hold the press accountable for these distortions.

Discussion of the Mystics' attendance should go into the WNBA forum. Wink
