EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) - Northwestern women's basketball player Jordan Hankins has been found dead in her room at the university.
The university said in a statement that Hankins' body was found Monday afternoon. The statement from spokesman Carsten Parmenter said there is no indication of foul play or "any danger or threat to other members of the Northwestern community."
The nature and cause of Hankins' death will be determined by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
Women's basketball coach Joe McKeown is calling Jordan, a sophomore, a "remarkably dynamic young woman," adding her death is a "devastating loss for our basketball family."
Hankins was recruited out of Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, where she received Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/Subway Underclass All-State Honorable Mention in both 2013 and 2014.

Just horrible. Sure puts a game in perspective pretty quick. Thoughts and prayers to her family, her team and the Northwestern community. Just awful.

Young people are so vulnerable. It's always been that way. They so often lack the perspective of age, that in most cases things will get better.
Her death has been ruled a suicide. So sad. May she truly find some peace.

My son committed suicide just over a year ago. We all saw it coming like a slow motion train wreck and tried our best to stop it. We knew he was in pain and did as much as we were humanly able to for him. It wasn't enough.
My only question is, did anyone see this child's pain? Did anyone try to help? I can only hope so.

Wow, I am so, so sorry. No parent should ever have to suffer through such a loss. I understand it may be weird as we're all just anonymous users on a basketball message board, but my messages are always open if you need someone to talk to.
I've gone through bouts of depression and live with daily anxiety. I've had moments when I've felt like giving up. Fortunately, it never did come to that, and I'm now pursing a degree in clinical psychology in hopes of one day guiding people through their darkest days like my counselor did for me. Because there's nothing worse than feeling like you have nothing to live for, and that you have no one to turn to.
(and yes, this is me self-disclosing and temporarily ditching my admittedly arrogant and snide Rebkell persona. Much love to you all.)

So sorry to hear about your son. I can only imagine how difficult and painful that is.

I think it is possible that they didn't know. Someone at work had a step-son who committed suicide. He said that the step-son was quiet and had a subdued personality, but he and his wife did not realize that he was depressed. And I remember when Margaux Hemingway committed suicide, the quotes from her family and friends made it sound like they didn't realize that she was depressed. But one of her neighbors (she lived alone) said that he had passed her on the street a few days earlier and she looked very depressed. Which made me wonder if she was trying to keep it from her family or if she cheered up when she talked to them to where they couldn't notice it.
