Could a Plum/EDD duo in Washington finally push that team into elite status?

Ahhh, why not!? It's what we fans DO over the long winter season. Cool Plum is Plum....a scorer. Numbers are really quite moot, no? They certainly didn't guarantee Stiles a marvelous career. Just as Kelsey is much improved over her freshman year, she will also grow in the pro ranks.

No-Defense Banham made a roster. LaToya Thomas was a #1 pick. Delle Donne has made MVP, from the #2 pick, over the Game-Changer #1 pick, Griner. Becky Hammon was a relative unknown, now a Hall-of-Famer for certain.

There are so many layers that factor into making a star, but Plum certainly has all the right ingredients, imo.

If Plum does reach #1, wouldn't it something if Kelsey Mitchell decided to stay her senior year and reached #1 the very next year?

Mitchell is at 2189 career points right now with about 50 games remaining and she has averaged 25.2 ppg career. If she maintains that average that would put her a touch over 3400 pts. The record has stood for 15 years, and now it could be broken in successive years.

Is Mitchell ahead of or behind Plum's pace?

How many points did Plum have at this point in her season last year?

The easiest thing to compare is the points through the sophomore years

Plum had 1458 pts in 67 games
Mitchell had 1762 pts in 69 games

But Plum has been a terror in her junior and senior years, while Mitchell has been a couple points below her career average this year... maybe because McGuff wants to take more of a team game approach? Mitchell is down 3 mpg from last season but her overall shooting % is slightly better than it's ever been. If it's Mitchell's goal to reach #1 in career points, I'm pretty sure she can do it.

My guess is up in the middle somewhere. I watched her yesterday for the first time since the FF last year, against a team with some experience against her, and she really is all that. It is a bit different watching her and Osahor in a a Pac-12 game where the players and coaches know one another a little better.

Plum, espnW's national player of the week, has scored 2,971 career points. Stiles finished her career at Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State) with 3,393 points. With 13 regular-season games remaining and assuming the Huskies play at least two games in the Pac-12 tournament (reaching the semifinals) and three in the NCAA tournament (reaching the Sweet 16), Plum would need to average 23.5 points per game the rest of the season to catch Stiles. That seems pretty reasonable considering the 5-foot-8 senior, who earlier in the season became the top scorer in Pac-12 conference history, is averaging 30.7 points per game, which also happens to be an astonishing 5.5 points clear of the second-best Division I point producer this season (Old Dominion's Jennie Simms).

11th place on the career list
29 pts to catch Maya
32 pts to catch EDD

I'd like to see what kind of magic the Mystics would have to use to pull off getting both. Smile

Excluding an injury or illness, this is moving into "lock" territory, isn't it?

The 14 represents the minimum number of games left for her.
According to the article I posted above, 17 games is the more likely minimum.

17 games at 22.8 ppg should be easy for her the way she's been playing.
Even at 14 games, 27.6 ppm is still below her season average.

You might think it would diminish if more teams focus on trying to limit her. But even against a good team that admittedly focused their defense on trying to slow her down, she still got 22 against Notre Dame. So it's hard to imagine she wouldn't average at least 22-24 for the rest of the year.

I was only half paying attention last night because I've totally been taken down by the flu...but I cringed every time the announcers mentioned that she has never missed a game. Shocked Um, we play at ASU tomorrow. I have serious concerns that they are not going to want to let all of our players walk out of the arena.

Add 34 pts tonight. That gives her 3041 for her career, overtaking Maya and EDD. Next target, Banham.

Jackie Stiles rooting for Washington star Kelsey Plum to break Stiles’ NCAA scoring record

“I had fun playing professional basketball and that’s a dream come true, but I would trade every contract to go back and play another four years of college basketball,” Stiles said. “I just want her to enjoy every second of this journey that she has left.

Some people call it stat-padding, but I say it's a an honest attempt at making history.

Code:

12   27.0   48.3   49.8
13   24.9   44.6   46.0
14   23.1   41.4   42.7
15   21.6   38.7   39.9
16   20.3   36.3   37.4
17   19.1   34.1   35.2
18   18.0   32.2   33.2
19   17.1   30.5   31.5
20   16.2   29.0   29.9

I was not going to add these until later, but someone mentioned it on the Boneyard, so I decided I needed to do it now. The first set of averages is the Stiles one as usual. The second one is for Woodard's pre-NCAA mark and the last one is Maravich's ridiculous three year record.

I suppose soon I will have to remove the last row too.
