UNCASVILLE, Conn. (December 1, 2016) — Connecticut Sun forward Chiney Ogwumike underwent successful Achilles surgery Wednesday on her left tendon at Houston Methodist Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.

The timetable for recovery from such a procedure is typically six to nine months.

“Battle scars come with the territory,” said Ogwumike, the 2016 WNBA Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year. “I firmly believe that every disappointment is a blessing because the person that emerges is stronger than before.”

Competing overseas in China this offseason, Ogwumike was the first round MVP of the WCBA, where she averaged 33.6 points and 12.4 rebounds per game for Henan Yichuan.

“Chiney continues to be an inspiration to me with her positive attitude and a champion’s mentality,” Sun head coach and general manager Curt Miller said. “She will look at the bright side of this latest set back and see an opportunity to become an even better player, person and teammate. Her determination to attack any obstacle is impressive.”

After missing all of the 2015 season while recovering from micro-fracture surgery on her right knee, Ogwumike bounced back in 2016. Appearing 33 games with 18 starts, she finished second on the team in scoring (12.6 ppg) and led team in rebounds (6.7 rpg). She closed the season with 17 straight double-figure scoring games – tied for the fourth-longest such streak in team history. In that span, she averaged 16.9 points and 9.2 rebounds with seven 20-point games and eight double-doubles.

Ogwumike had a career-high 26 points and seven blocks with 15 rebounds at Dallas on June 20th. The seven blocks were tied for third most in a game in Sun history. She also set a franchise record for most shots made without a miss, going 8-for-8 against Minnesota on June 7th.

The first overall pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft, Ogwumike averaged 15.5 points with 29 double-figure scoring games on the way to WNBA Rookie of the Year honors.

Wow, another huge blow. I feel so bad for her. When did this injury even happen?

I wonder if it was a full rupture like Wiggins, who never seemed the same after her injury, or partial like Lonely DRob.

Cambage seem to come back remarkably well from hers, so you never can tell. But with Ogwumike's aggressive style, I would think this is not the injury you would want.

Looks like CON will be doing the Alyssa Thomas at PF thing this coming season.

Rough start to her WNBA career with another injury.

6 months puts her at about May. 9 months puts her at about August.

Did she pay overseas and this just happen or was this something during the season she was dealing with or someone that happened while just training in the US?

It happened overseas in China from my understanding.

I just feel so bad for her. She was just getting back to form and had a nice season in the W. She was having such a great season over there and seemed to be enjoying the experience with her team. I'm praying for a complete recovery and hope we will at least her broadcasting during the season as she recovers.

Here's an interesting article that mentions Chiney's injury. Seems like 9-11 mo is a more realistic timeline.

the Sun could tank for Kelsey Mitchell in 2018 now. Though they do have Bentley, Banham, Jones & A. Thomas to build around.

If they get Mitchell, they could deal Banham for peanuts.

Not sure they have to put any actual effort into tanking.
