As usual, most of these will come from sportstvratings.com
Figures are average viewers during the entire broadcast. Please let me know if you think I am missing a game although not all channels get rated.
11/14 UConn vs FSU ESPN2 338,000

Assuming I did not delete part of my records, I have that as higher than average viewership for any WNBA game last season by more than 130,000.

12/15 DePaul vs Temple ESPNU 42,000
The volleyball semifinals on ESPN were very young skewing and made it into the top 50 cable original broadcasts yesterday despite not having big viewership totals. The second one had a weird gender skew. Ratings in percentages for that demographic group on average that were watching.
Stanford-Minnesota (495,000):
18-49: Total: .18 Women: .12 Men: .24
18-34: .21 Women 12-34: .14 Men 12-34: .22
25-54: .17 50+: .20
Texas-Nebraska (545,000):
18-49: Total: .21 Women: .19 Men: .23
18-34: .21 Women 12-34: .23 Men 12-34: .16
25-54: .20 50+: .21

There's not much can be done about ratings when you can't even get the games.

12/18 UCLA vs South Carolina ESPN2 125,000
The skew of younger viewers towards females continues to intrigue me for volleyball since everything we've heard about sports ratings suggest that only NBC Olympics coverage skews female.
Saturday's Stanford-Texas final averaged 576,000 on ESPN2.
Here were the demographic breakdowns (each rating is a percent of that total demographic that were watching on average):
18-49: All: .18 Female: .15 Male .21
18-34: .14 Female 12-34: .15 Male 12-34: .13
25-54: .21 50+: .25

Lets go apples to apples to see if Volleyball has passed us in popularity. do you have the round by round NCAA Women's tourney numbers from last year to compare with this year's volleyball tourney? (obviously revisiting this in march as well)

At the high school level, volleyball participation is rising significantly and basketball participation is holding steady or dropping.

Not sure where else to put this, but I Just saw that ESPN2 has picked up Miami-Notre Dame game for later this year. Was not originally on their list of games to put on ESPN. Is there a way to find a full list of games ESPN has picked up? I presume they picked up more than one?

What are the theories as to why and do any of them involve the WNBA?

ESPN has a few timeslots where they have flex options and pick which channel has which game out of a few choices. I guess that means our game with FSU will not be on ESPN2.

The old thread has numbers here:

Volleyball has not passed basketball in popularity. Actually on a tournament to tournament basis, the Softball College World Series is the biggest threat. What I am interested in is the relatively gender skew since there is so much debate about whether male or female viewers should be targeted for basketball.
Who is us in this case? I may have worked in basketball, but I actually played volleyball and prefer watching it.

I prefer playing volleyball; however, I grew up watching Stanford, and the statistics in basketball are far more interesting to me than volleyball stats for some reason.

There are a lot of theories about the rise of volleyball relative to basketball, and here's the list (without explanation and in no particular order):
1) Volleyball is a non-contact sport
2) Volleyball uniforms, in general, are more flattering to the players
3) Basketball is an inner-city sport with inner-city attitudes on the court and in the stands
4) Basketball is dominated by African-Americans, a 12% minority, which makes it easier for young non-African-American girls to identify with players
5) The overt lesbian presence in basketball (other sports may have the same percentage but are not as visible out)

A hundredth of a percentage point more in 18-49 viewers and we would have been able to see detailed demographic information for this one:

I guess if your ratings are below what they would be if a single Nielsen panelist watched the entire broadcast, you can experiment with new broadcast techniques like they did in this game.
