I did enjoy the dinner comment. (Not sure what relevance it has to anything)
Video feed is just a little stutter unfortunately.

Round 8

More interesting results this round, with Hamson returning to the Sydney lineup to help them defeat Bendigo in OT, Perth inflicting a home loss on Townsville, and then Canberra taking Perth down. Adelaide predictably lost both of their games, although they did manage to keep both good opponents within arm's reach for large parts of both games.

Melbourne Boomers (who released Chante Black last week) have signed Kalisha Keane.

http://wnbl.com.au/boomers-secure-canadian-kalisha-keane/

This must be a record for the number of Canadians playing in the WNBL.

Sami Whitcomb chases WNBA dream amid stellar WNBL season

At 28, Whitcomb’s success is apt reward for a career spent overcoming the odds to prove she belongs.

After a solid college career, the California native was the last player cut from tryouts for WNBA side Chicago Sky in 2010.

Yes she's American. And I think it's pretty obvious by now that talent and skill are not deal makers for the WNBA. If it was about that there are a lot of players who would be playing and a lot that wouldn't be. I'm actually not completely sure what they want.

Round 9

One of those rare round when things went pretty much to the script.
Sydney held Asia Taylor out of this round as a precaution due to a concussion, which may have cost them the game against Dandenong, but didn't stop them dispensing with Melbourne. Perth hung on against a determined Townsville, and today Dandenong consolidated top spot with a win in Bendigo.
It sets up what should be an excellent contest next round when Dandenong travel to Perth for the first WNBL game ever to be broadcast live on commercial tv.

I haven't heard anything substantial ... not that that means much! My assumption is that they thought they were getting a post player who would be fairly dominant in this league, so when her numbers didn't live up to that (7.4 points & 7.1 rebounds in 26 minutes per game) she became an easy scapegoat for the team's poor start to the season. (Not that they're actually too bad, but the top 6 teams are all vert strong this season so you only need to be slightly off as a team to find yourself in 7th place). Also, Melbourne are a club on a budget so if they spent a good chunk of their budget on her they would expect numbers.
The fact that they replaced her with someone who is only 6'1 is the thing that makes me wonder if there was something else that wasn't right about the fit, because that seems a strange choice for a team lacking size.

Round 10

A little separation at the top of the ladder for the first time this season, as Dandenong won their road double, including a convincing win over Perth. Sydney stumbled after losing Snell to injury and taking Taylor out as a precaution, though they still managed to beat Canberra. Adelaide & Melbourne both continued their long losing streaks, with Batkovic feasting on the undersized Boomers. Adelaide's luck went from bad to worse with Laura Hodges injuring her hamstring.

Round 11

Winless Adelaide gave Townsville a serious fright to start the round, but couldn't close it out. Meanwhile Bendigo was Part 1 of an awful weekend for Canberra. Saturday saw Sydney get Asia Taylor back and take down 1st-placed Dandenong, while Melbourne broke their long losing streak with a big win over Canberra. Today Adelaide came to Perth and will probably leave wondering why they bothered.

Round 12

This was a mini-round of just 3 games, in which Adelaide & Melbourne continued their losing ways, and the big winners were Sydney Uni. They had 2 road wins in consecutive nights, including a huge one over Perth. Asia Taylor was particularly impressive, showing an ability to create off the dribble that I hadn't noticed before.

Adelaide 72 (Logic 17p 7r, Planeta 17p 7r, Roberts 12p)
Sydney 89 (Taylor 26p 14r, Wilson 18p 5r 7a, Hamson 12p 14r, Mitchell 11p, Graham 11p)

Perth 69 (Whitcomb 22p 5r 5a, Lavey 11p 9r, Hamblin 11p 6r)
Sydney 93 (Mitchell 27p, Taylor 21p 13r 8a, Hamson 11p 7r, Graham 11p, Wilson 10p 6r)

Round 13

All teams were back in action this weekend, with the 3 that had the extra week of holidays all looking pretty rusty.
Just when you think you've got a handle on this league ... Adelaide registered their first win of the season, on the road and with Hodges still not back from injury. Roberts & Planeta both with huge games against the undersized Boomers. Then less than 24 hours later, they went to Dandenong and knocked off the first-placed Rangers. Roberts with another great game, and 18yo Anneli Maley - who only joined the team a few weeks ago - playing a big role in the win too.
That left the door open for Sydney, who have been on a nice winning streak, to join the Rangers at the top. But they blew it and managed to lose at home to Canberra. Go figure.
Perth, with a healthy roster for the first time this season, broke their franshise record score as they blew the rusty Bendigo team away.

Townsville 93 (Batkovic 19p 12r, Kame 16p 5r, Cocks 14p, Garbin 13p 8r, Standish 12p 6r, Cloud 8p 5r 8a)
Canberra 60 (Mansfield 16p, Ruef 13p 12r) (Gwathmey DNP - illness)
Boxscore

Melbourne 67 (Garrick 14p 7r, Kunek 14p 6r, Thompson 12p 7r, Cole 12p, Keane 9p)

Perth 108 (Whitcomb 34p 6a, Hamblin 21p 8r 5b, Mijovic 11p 7r, Lavey 10p, Lee 10p) (Butler 3p 3r)

Round 14

An unusually early start & finish to this round. Only 4 games ... no idea why ... but all 4 went right down to the wire. The nice news was Laura Hodges and Belinda Snell both overcoming their injuries and returning to action.
Suzy Batkovic played her 300th WNBL game and had a good one, but her team failed to get the win. Canberra's win lifts them to within striking distance of the top 4.
Dandenong celebrated their 25th anniversary with nearly all of their past players in attendance, including flying Penny Taylor home for the weekend. They nearly blew it too, but managed to force OT and then stormed home from there to hang on to top spot.

Round 15

Bendigo Spirit were the big losers this week as Townsville trounced them and took their place in the top 4. They're hurting without their starting PG. Canberra boosted their playoff hopes with another win, so things remain very tight from positions 3-6.
At the top, Dandenong annihilated Adelaide, and Sydney Uni had an impressive with over Perth.

Hamson seems to be doing well with Sydney. I'm hoping she gets another shot in the W this year.

Round 16

Just 3 rounds left in the regular season, and the playoff picture is still as unclear as ever.
Dandenong stumbled in Perth, and Sydney survived two thrillers to take their #1 spot, thanks to Suzy Batkovic missing both free throws at the end of the game when her team trailed by 1. Ouch.
Raincock-Ekunwe was moved to the bench and responded with a huge game to keep Bendigo alive.

Round 17

Melbourne & Adelaide were competitive this weekend, but still lost.
The important games involved the jostling for that last playoff spot, and Townsville came through in a huge way, winning their road double-header despite being without Cloud due to injury. Batkovic dominant in both games.
Bendigo & Canberra both lost, and are now unlikely to get to 4th spot (although it is still mathematically possible)
There's still a good battle going on among the top 3 teams for positioning as well.

I don't usually campaign for other players, but someone really needs to at least give Whitcomb a training camp look.
