Nice win for GB over Montenegro. Unfortunate both that I couldn't see it, and that it's likely meaningless due to the two double-digit losses in the opening games. We'll still need to win in Italy (ideally by a lot of points), and get some help elsewhere, to make it through.

Wow, that certainly changes the USAB picture. So hmmm does that move Diggins up in the point guard pecking order with Odyssey and DRob or does Moriah leap frog everyone?

Sloot must have figured the USA team wasn't in the cards

Quote:
"I told Moriah, the spots that are the most available moving forward are the perimeter spots; Sue [Bird], Diana [Taurasi], Lindsay [Whalen]. This might be the last go-around for those guys. And look around; there isn't another point guard right now that can compare to Sue. But that means someone has an opportunity to step into that role, especially this summer [in the WNBA] if she gets onto the right team, with the right teammates and right style of play. If you are a college point guard right now, you have a chance going forward to be a part of this. It's been the strength of our team and it's not going to be anymore."

WOW. I'd assume this moves Robinson, Jefferson & Diggins as the top choices to replace Bird & Whalen in 2020.

Hmmm...who is being quoted here? Geno? We've been complaining for a while about USAB not properly grooming young guards or "passing the torch" so to speak which is what happened with Bird and Taurasi. I suppose this may have been the plan all along.

Can you not read between the lines? He's saying nobody in camp but the old school guards are good enough, so that would include Robinson and Diggins. Of course, Diggins wasn't in camp this last time and Robinson was hindered by the Achilles.... but I would think Geno would factor in stuff like that before making such a statement.

To me it looks like he wants to make Jefferson his new #1 on the retirement of the old school guards. It also sounds like he's gonna stick around to make this happen.

Heck, why doesn't UConn declare it's independence, then Geno can have his team and the USA can have the rest that actually deserve to be there.

Without wishing to turn this into yet another UConn bitching thread, that'd give us a much more interesting final than we tend to end up with. UConn might not be as deep as Team USA, but Bird/Jefferson, Taurasi, Moore, Stewart, Charles would be a nice place to start.

I wrote about the results of the group draw and explained the new format here:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2016/12/eurobasket-2017-draw-results/

A: Spain, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Hungary
B: Turkey, Belarus, Slovak Republic, Italy
C: France, Serbia, Greece, Slovenia
D: Russia, Montenegro, Latvia, Belgium

The bottom team in each group is eliminated after the first phase.

Not to derail, but for what it's worth, I have a strong feeling that the next great American point guard is a rising sophomore at Oregon.

I see Diana potential in that player , but her dribbling needs to improve . She has ALL the tools to be the next great american guard for sure .

Luckily for the USA, she's already played for the United States in FIBA competitions, so the fact that she can get Romanian citizenship (both her parents were born there) will only affect her Bosman status (if that's still the name of the rule).

Actually, that's not quite how it works in most leagues, including the EuroLeague and EuroCup. In those, citizenship does not matter if you are not eligible to play for a European national team. Some domestic leagues will recognize European (or Cotonou) passports regardless of national team status, but not all of them.

Thanks for the clarification. So Ionescu basically will be considered an American in professional basketball regardless of whether she holds Romanian citizenship because she has played for the USA in FIBA competitions.

Bentley, Vaughn?

But so far it doesn't look like the Sun miss Bentley, the Liberty miss Vaughn or Prince, and the Dantas is playing pretty well for the Dream so Lyttle is not being missed a lot.

The Dream miss Lyttles defense and her being there makes sure that they get Dantas points off the bench
