@MikeAndMike: If Stanford was a country, it would have finished 10th in the medal count with 25. (Brazil/Belgium had 25 combined)

According to the Stanford website that Stanford athletes won 27 medals in Rio, so I'm not sure how they calculated the 25 medals because the numbers don't add up to just take away 2 medals from the count on Stanford's page.

But either way that is a false statement, because of team competitions and relays that drops the number of medals down. Stanford had 4 players on the women's water polo team and 2 players on the men's volleyball team. Had Stanford actually fielded a men's volleyball team or women's water polo team or Kerri Walsh teamed with a player from Stanford there is no telling where they would have placed. And on Stanford's Rio recap they count each person that won a medal, so the 4 players that won gold with water polo counts as 4 medals on their page.

That raises an interesting question. When the US wins the women's 4x100 relay or the 400 IM, do they count that as one medal or four in the country-by-country medal count?

I assume one, but I don't know. I've never thought of it.

Relays count as one, like all team events
